Conan the Barbarian (1982) on Blu-Ray at last?

Considering the number of past films which have appeared on Blu-Ray since the Format Wars were won three years ago, one can only wonder in amazement that Conan the Barbarian is one of the few Arnold Schwarzenegger classics which hasn’t been transferred to the format. Even Red Sonja’s been translated to Blu-Ray. However, the wait may soon be over, as Albion Sword’s Facebook page may have let the cat out of the bag:

This week, Marc Ostrick from Ostrick Productions (California) is here shooting some “extra” stuff for the upcoming Blu-Ray re-release of 1982′s Conan the Barbarian. Marc arrived just before the blizzard hit (welcome to Wisconsin!). Joe Waites is giving a forging exhibition in this photo. Aaron Pynenberg will also be featured, demonstrating Western swordsmanship, Lars will be talking about the design work that goes into our Filmswords recreations, along with some other interviews and footage showing what we do here. Ought to be an interesting feature!

Albion Swords, of course, are working on replicas of the 1982 Jody Samson designs.

So it seems Conan the Barbarian is finally making its way into high definition. With the greater disc space available, I can imagine many extras impossible on previous DVD recordings could be included: remastered sound & visuals, many extra features, perhaps even the recent re-recorded soundtrack as an option. They could even go the Tron: Legacy rout, and provide a  special collectable packaging (perhaps modeled after the Wheel of Pain?) containing the Blu-Ray, DVD and Digital Copy all in one box, in addition to the standard Blu-Ray release. From a Howard fan’s point of view, one can only hope that this new DVD updates the deeply flawed chapter on Robert E. Howard in “Conan Unchained,” or perhaps they’ll create an entirely new documentary. Hopefully we won’t have to wait long for more details.

Many thanks to the Robert E. Howard Forum’s Seamvs for the scoop.

I don’t have blu-ray. Only recently got hold of an uncencored version on DVD from South Korea. The U.K. version has horse falls edited out making a mockery of the battle of the mounds scene in particular. In the past I had always blamed those somewhat confusing moments on John Milius. Seems it was the British board of censorship all along.

    Lol, the king Ostrick…

    @Steve

Just get the french special edition. It is the most complete edition. It has the “Moby Dick” speech before the final battle and all horses falling, all the nudity and everything.

    it’s about time!

Meh, I’ve got it on DVD. What the hell do I need the Blu Ray for? I see little difference in the formats, unless comparing a Pixar film or something like Watchmen. I just don’t see the point in watching a traditionally filmed movie in HD.

The more popular Blu Ray gets, the cheaper I get my DVD’s for. I just bought a double feature DVD of Fargo and Raising Arizona last night for 11.99, and all 4 Lethal Weapons in one package for 9.99.

    Long live DVD.

To add to that, I put the Blu Ray of The Fellowship of the Ring in the other day and then put the DVD in, and I could see little to no difference. If I’m going to switch my entire catalog over, I need a little more than just “some difference”. Anybody else feel this way, or am I just not perceptive enough to notice the difference?

    Thanks.

Gazongo: The South Korean vesion is the same as the French and U.S.A. version. EVERYWHERE in fact is the same version apart from the censored U.K. version. I do want the original VHS ending back though. That whole final scene with the hippy princess and Arnie lumbering about like an oafish ballerina before carrying her off into the sunrise is not only boring but makes me cringe. Sorry John Milius but that was pants.
Crom Crom: I would love to agree but I remeber a time (not that long ago) when I swore I would never to buy cds. I think I will pass over the soon to be obsolete Blu-ray hi-def in favour of the microchip implant special edition in multi surround 3D. That way I won’t have to leave bed and I can tell all you guys how great I think it is on the blog by flickering my eyelids whilst being fed through an introvenous drip via my anus. For lo, this is a culture of distraction.

@cromcrom: well i would normally agree, i save the blu ray purchases( only through the use of a ps3) now for certain flicks but my conan special edition dvd may or may not have been used as a frisbee in this household as it was scratched to shit. so I might as well wait for the blu ray…though conan the destroyer may well be a worthy dvd purchase at $3.99.ah childhood memories of that silly flick….@Steve: it’s funny, I always thought that last scene was a sort of weird afterthought, like a silent movie meets an ed wood flick, aside her being carried ( which told me conan was over valeria readying his next conquest!lol)away in the last frames,it had this eerieness to it that didnt realy fit in with the rest of the movie.

They do an expensive conversion process to 1080p. Sometimes they do a good job, sometimes they do a bad job. It’s different for each movie. My guess is it has to do with the amount of money they put into it (surprise) and the characteristics of the film itself. Of course you have to be watching it on a HD tv or it will look exactly the same as a DVD.

It’s good that they waited to do it until now, because now arnold is free for interviews.

  • ColinJ

@Steve Dilks – I agree about ditching the additional ending. I much prefer the more somber, contemplative original ending to the film.

Althohgh that additional scene before the Battle of the Mounds is great and they should keep that in.

Overall, I’m thrilled that this is coming out. I hope it does the film justice and isn’t just a thrown-together piece of crap like the blu-ray editions of ROBOCOP, PREDATOR and DIE HARD.

At first I didn’t see the point but now I’m converted. Blurays rock, even if you see little difference between your standard def disc you are seeing the movie with less compression therefore you’re seeing the real movie as it was on film. As Finn pointed out lot of it has to do with the quality of your TV. For me, it does make old movies more enjoyable since you get to discover new things that didn’t stand out before. Its kind of a misconception that if a movie isn’t new, the Bluray and DVD will be the same but that isn’t the case. Blurays typically allow for a more vivid and clear picture like original film print would. The quality on movies like Casablanca is amazing in comparison to the standard def disc. Bluray discs are also more durable and will stand up to more viewings without scratching and interrupting playback. You have room for more special features too since they have so much storage capacity. I cannot wait for a Bluray version of Conan the Barbarian (also really wanting Hook and The Rocketeer). I’m not wanting to re-buy all my collection, just the movies I love the most and really want to treasure for a long time in the truest possible format.

I think I will stick with my recent purchase of double DVD special of Conan the Barbarian. It is enough..damn you lot, I gonna watch it again tonight, thanks to CROM for reminding me! Love the mullet guys that look like Iron Maiden stars with huge clubs, a Manowar track should bellow out when they come on screen lol.

“Aaron Pynenberg will also be featured, demonstrating Western swordsmanship…”

Quite a mismatch, since there’s not a shred of western swordsmanship in the film. That could only serve to make the featured film look bad.

Can’t wait for this on Blu-ray at last, but i guess, as a UK customer, i’ll be stuck with the cut version unless i buy from France or the US, as i did with the DVD version i have (have a multi-region DVD player) – does anyone know though if the US version will be zone free as some previous blu-ray titles have been, as my blu-ray player isnt multi-region?

Conan the Barbarian (1982), Casino (1995), and The Matrix (1999) contain scenes, borrowed from Soviet movies. Video and text commentary on this topic:
