Saïd Taghmaoui Interview for Première

The Cimmerian’s Gallic stalwart Miguel Martins has alerted me to an interview with Saïd Taghmaoui, who is starring as a thief who plays a significant role in the film. Miguel has also provided a translation of the interview: Merci beaucoup, mon ami!

Conan, we’ve just finished the shooting.
I don’t know, I think it will be for December. It’s something huge, Conan, it has been awaited, because it is a cult film. I had the luck and honor to participate in this extraordinary adventure. They called me, they offered me the part. It’s just very pleasant, you know. Being acknowledged like that helps you to build yourself as an human being. You can expect a Conan revisited in 3D, a little bit like 300. A little bit harder, with fights more violent and special effects a little bit more crazy. It will be very interesting. I adored Conan when I was younger. It [Taghmaoui pauses] … overwhelmed me. These love scenes…I was 15, 14. It was the first time that I saw that in a cinema. Those muscular men… Conan, it was a little revolution. It had a whole phantasmagoric universe, and it touched me. So when they offered me to act in that [movie], I asked : “where do I sign?” I don’t even need to read the script, tell me where I have to sign, I just want to do it. Furthermore, it is a trilogy, and my character…if there’s a Conan 2, I’ll be there. It’s cool, you know. It’s also a way to show that we can do films set in the Middle-Ages while being of Arab origin. I would have dreamed of playing d’Artagnan in France. Why not? Ask the French authors. Conan, it’s the Middle-Ages, GI Joe, it’s a super-heroes, futuristic movie and we can make them without a problem in the United States… If we succed in opening breaches like that through what I achieve internationally, and if a million Saïds become actors, I would be the happiest man on Earth. It is between you and yourself, you and your imagination, you and the audience. You can achieve everything if you think you’re able to do it, when you give yourself the means to succeed…yes we can!

Première is a prestigious French film magazine, so to see an interview for the film is pretty significant — not to mention another French scoop for the film. The Cimmerian may be gone, but Miguel’s scoops keep on coming. It is great to hear Saïd is enthusiastic about the role, and he seems to appreciate the “melting pot” of cultures the Hyborian Age offers.

An Arab d’Artagnan… Hmm.

Conan 2? i’d love to see that come true! but i’ll wait to see conan first. it’s also comforting to know this movie is gonna be huge. makes me have hope. Jason is gonna be great tho!

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

    Middle-ages, 300, 3d, crazy special effects…My head is spinning.
Well, always happy for non-american actors getting recognition oversears. But very glad he’s not the one writing the script.

  • Ray

Coming out in December??? That would be cool because I was told around Aug. 2011

  • m

what the F$%k is this guy saying? actually i think i understand what he’s getting at but man, some of these actors make themselves sound so stupid when they try to say intelligent things…. that would be sweet if it comes out this year. How are things ray? any new movies coming up?if by chance you ever get to work with a guy named stevan mena ( independent director, made an acclaimed low budget horror flick called malevolence) , his brother jason was a friend ( and stevan) of mine from way way back .I havent seen them in 15 years , they lived near me when i lived in westbury ny and he’s seems to be making a mark as an indie director.look him up.

  • Ray

What’s up, m. I’m currently busy with work and getting ready to get married this Sunday ;) No new movies coming up…but kind of planning on the possibility of being in God of War if anyone decides to make it ;) I’ll look Steve’s name up and keep his name in mind if I ever get the opportunity to do something like this again. Anything new with you?

  • Steve Dilks

M: I think something got messed up in the translation but even so the gist of what he is saying is not very encouraging, as Ralph points out.I guess the comedic thief sidekick is going to be in this after all (groan!) and hang around for the “sequel” in this “trilogy”.
Hollywood is predictabely lame is it not? Lets hope they can find their way to releasing the “Conan: Red nails” animated movie soon. I checked on the crew working on that a while ago and was struck by the contrast to this live action movie. Not only do they have Ron Pearlman but Clancey Brown and Mark Hamill. Conceptual art and design is done by the execelllent Mike Kaluta.I don’t believe that this suddenly fell through so near completion. It is in the hands of Paradox now and you can bet they are waiting to release it at some point in the future.
    Valhalla Ray: Congratulations shield brother.

  • Fayric

m, I dont think its because Said is an actor he talks like that, its because its originaly in french. My pardon to any french people out there but if you are used to reading english texts and try to read a french text (or if its just in the translations?)they have a compleatly different way of expressing themself, even in writing (and its not just me saying so, Ive heard professors varning students about how the french write in a peculiar fashion that is hard to follow if you are used to english).
Anyway, its hard to make facts from fiction in this. I doubt its up for december if they dont even have a trailer yet, so I guess the triology is just speculation as well. As for it to be even more violent and harder than 300, it makes me doubt much anything he say. The medieval ref dont bother me, I think its just his way of saying its set in a swordswinging past. But at the same time none of this can be dismissed. rumors from a fairly big actor in this movie should not be taken lightly, even if they seem a bit imaginary. The things I get from it is: Its set for most part in an Arabian place; Saids charchter have an important enough part for him to say he will be in the sequel. Also, If t´he likes the milius movie that much, I suppose he have tried to make his character much like Subotai. A big thanks to Miguel Martin for providing us with this treassure in a time of basicly no facts about the production.

Ray, congratulations! Hope you have a great weekend and wedding!

  • m

@ray congratulations on your wedding bro ,best of luck to you.@steve: I read about the voice talent in rednails, yes ron perlman,as conan.he is also the voice of conan in the ps3 game, which was at times fun to listen to him , at other times it sounded like he phoned his dialogue in.you get to hear him tell your foes to “( which conan would likely never say)face crom!”or ” let crom judge you” ( which conan would never say either but it was funny as you gutted your foes) At one point the female lead asks conan if he would serve a woman to which conan replies:” service her. aye, and gladly” after checking out her goods.they probably have scenes of it on you tube if you ever want to get an idea on how perlman may sound( i’m sure he modified himself for this cartoon). Comic con is on now, any conan news out there yet?

  • http://poderfriki.com Kike

Nothing from the Comic-con? Nothing at all? I cant believe we have so little news about this movie! WHAT THE HELL HAPPENS TO THE PEOPLE INVOLVED???

  • Steve Dilks

Kike: They are all in hiding waiting for the wrath of Crom! I don’t think there has been enough time to prep for comic-con. Then again they didn’t prep for the filming either, so who knows?
Fayric: Yep,”Conan” does look to be set in an Hyborian arabian nights type of setting which is something Stephen Lang may have meant when referencing “Jason and the Argonauts” and what not as an influence on this movie. Let’s hope it plays better than a carbon copy of “Prince of Persia”. Cloud farting zombies make me shudder- but for all the wrong reasons unfortunately.

  • Big V

    Did they go to Comic-con?

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

They don’t have to prep! They have to face the fans! Even if just to talk about the script with nothing to show. Here’s a snippet from Thor:

Marvel director, Kevin Feige, warned Chris Hermsworth about rabid fans in Comic Con: “If you manage to impress them, you’re on the right track.”

Chris Hemsworth, said “It’s a little scary to be honest. Their devotion and strong feelings about this character. A few months ago, I was feeling pretty secure about this whole thing, then I went off to read what people were saying in the internet…”

“Some people loved what we were doing, others hated. I’ll never read commentaries again!”, he said.

I’m sure the guy will do great, he’s already been in a major film, has solid acting and is in great physical shape. But I can’t help but feeling sorry for him if this flops.

Anyway, Thor will have its comic com panel and they too finished their filming very recently. They will face the fans. There’s no hiding in popular franchises.

  • Fayric

Well, it do make sense not to go to comic con if they wont relese it untill winter next year.
If they are making a sequel, you think they wait untill this movie is up, to see the reactions (how many dollars), or do they let momoa beef up some more and start filming spring 2011. Sounds odd to make momoa work out and keep/improve his physical appearance for as long as it wil take for this movie to get out, it makes more sense if they go for some intense filming of the whole “triology”. (or they could get another Conan for sequels. How about Brian Blessed as a very old king Conan?:/

  • Fayric

By the way I love that 1980 flash gordon, so dont you dare disrespect Brian

  • Fayric

Not really serious about him as king Conan though:D

    Have a nice weekend all.

  • http://poderfriki.com Kike

No, IT NOT MAKE SENSE at all.

This kind of adventure blockbusters used to have tons of publicity long time before the movie is released.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Indeed, lots of major movies bringing panels to Comic Con won’t be released this year. Green Lantern, Thor, Captain American, etc.

  • Ray

Thanks for all the congrat wishes! ;) As far as the trilogy rumor goes…based on what I was told…they definitely are planning to do sequals.

  • Steve Dilks

Brian Blessed as King Conan?! “HA,HA-BY CROM’S SPURIOUS THUNDERBOLT AND ISHTAR’S HOT READY LOINS!” Dialogue would have to run thus and the script typed in ultra bold capital letters. Always thought he should have been in “300″. He’s even got the beard for it!
As for a trilogy…If that was seriously on the cards they would have filmed them back to back. No question they are hedging their bets on how well this one will be recieved. Remember they came out with the same guff with “The golden compass” and our very own “Solomon Kane”.
Anyway I am not sure if comic-con has actually started yet. Anyone the wiser on this?

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Yes, it has Steve. Ain’t it cool news is covering it from their usual geek perspective. They were all very skeptical about this production, so I’m sure they won’t sugar coat any crap from the Paradox panel, should it even make an appearance.

  • Steve Dilks

Oh I think it started today. Interestingly I just resd a post on conan.com that states that the film is only allowed to do what Paradox allow them to do as stated in the contract. As with my earlier assumption I am guessing that this relies heavilly on their games and comic(the rights of which are leased to Dark Horse) along with some cheeky nudge-nudge swipes from the earlier movies. I am guessing (though I could be well off the mark) that Paradox do not own any Robert E. Howard material and would probabley have to pay a substantial amount of money for the adaption rights. The reason they can get away with it in the comics is maybe because the contract was renewed or updated from the original Marvel one when it changed hands to Paradox and thus came as part of the package. Whew! Any lawyers out there to back me on this one?
Valhalla Ray: We want a feast with meade, roast boar, rowdy bards and bawdy wenches at a an oaken hall in the mountains. Prefferabley in Norway or Finland. Thanks. Have a great weekend all, by Ymir’s frosty member!

  • Stampfer

@ Kike: John Carter Of Mars is another example of a big fantasy movie with such secretivness. This movie project is as long in development as a new Conan and famous directors were involved during the last 20 years and failed for different reasons (John McTiernan, Robert Rodriguez, Jon Favreau a.o.). The JCOM-movie could be a real “dangerous” competitor for Conan in 2011. A main difference: JCOM won’t be R-rated.
As in the case of Conan the principal photography for JCOM has wrapped, but there were absolutely no photos of the main characters/actors published so far. The budget of this movie is three times as big as Conan’s and the secrecy may be too. JCOM has to satisfy the skeptical fans of E.R. Burrough’s novels and original stories (another Déjà-Vu). That’s a real challenge for the director Andrew Stanton and Disney/Pixar. There’s no JCOM-Panel at the Comic Con in San Diego as much as I know, to name another parallel.
I think the main reason for this kind of secrecy is the possibility that every single frame of these movies will be manipulate, correct and complete with an enormous percentage of CGI-elements during post-production. There might be the fear that early pictures of props and actors could set wrong expectations amongst fans and moviegoers, because no detail has the state of quality which filmmakers aspire for their final product. Most artists dislike people who are looking over their shoulder before their work is finished. On the other hand filmmakers should not underrate the intelligence of moviegoers. They could explain what is shown on pics and what is to be expect for the final result. Most of us knew a little bit about special effects and CGI.
I think I have a good portion of patience and sympathy for the new Conan movie, but there can’t be a good reason for the absence of promo-shots of supporting actors five months after shooting has begun.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Not according to their press releases, Steve.

“Paradox Entertainment owns and controls the rights to the Conan, originally created by author Robert E. Howard in the 1930s, through its wholly-owned subsidiary Conan Properties International.”

How much is going to be adapted of the original tales in the final script is more of a marketing choice, it has to do with their expected profit margins, target audience, similar genre enterprises, other lucrative (successful) adaptations. It has little to do with with legal property and Howard fans, a percentage of the audience far less significant, then shall we say…Batman fans, when making a Batman movie.

  • m

anyone read that one of frazettas conan paintings sold recently for a cool 1.5 mil? I went on paradox’s site and they have a ton ,I mean a ton of robert e howard related projects from kull to bran mak morn to el borak to even cormac mac art planned. Now did they say december this year or next for conan? Comic con has i think another day or two, anyone hear anything yet?

  • Steve Dilks

Ralph: You are right. Just checked my Ballantine books edition of “The coming of Conan the Cimmerian”. Thanks-say, you not some big shot shyster lawyer are ya?
Stamfer: “John Carter of Mars” has no such problems as here with appeasing the fans. Disney/Pixar are the only choice for making this movie in my opinion. I love Burroughs almost as much as Howard and the Barsoom books I think will look great on screen today. Disney will not mess this one up-thats a cert. Its a shame “Avatar” got there first. I think when “A princess of Mars” was written in 1912 Ed was sat at his type writer thinking; “In a hundred years time they’ll have the technology to film this.” Barsoom. Its what CGI was created for. Against this “Conan” will be a very small fish indeed.

  • m

if you go on to the paradox site , i think it said they have the rights to reh’s whole library.makes sense , a bit now as to what they’re doing. starting with conan, theyre gonna bring a bunch of reh to screen, which i’ll take as there’s not much out there that’s original. I hope they do it all justice.

  • Steve Dilks

M: I think its August 2011 still. I pray Paradox never get round to butchering any more Howard on screen. Unless someone comes forward with a good script and vision they should just leave well enough alone. Did you read some of the pitches for those planned “epics”? Yikes!
A strange thought. Over at project pride they celebrate Robert E. Howard’s birthday. An odd thing to do for someone who killed himself I think.

  • m

some of the pics i saw from thor looked incredible. the asgard/valhalla/throne set has to be seen to be believed. it’s almost a throwback to those 80′s flicks like flash gordon( which ralph is an awesome fun flick, it’s everything it should be)a huge set piece.the concept art from cap america looks okay too.It would be a shame if conan wasnt there, good or bad .I’m sure when taranaich has news we’ll be the first to know anyway.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Well, I suppose that’s preferable to celebrating his suicide date in one of those “hundred years without” specials. You never know these days.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Yes M, at first I didn’t like the Thor pics, I was expecting something like Beowulf, with a mythological Valhalla, some nordic rendering of the uniforms and a realistic approach to the source material, in order to make it blend with Ironman and Captain America. I even made a concept art based on that idea (as usual). You can see it here: http://tinyurl.com/25w88n4

But the more I look at it, that’s not really Marvel’s Thor. They went for the Jack Kirby approach with colorful alien looking uniforms and the technicolor Valhalla, which will work pretty well. I’m just uneasy at how this will fit the Avengers.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

By the way, for those who care, here’s the yet unseen Thor’s helm. Much better looking than I envisioned, kudos.

    http://www.cinemaemcena.com.br/FILMES/3649/fotos/thor_07.jpg

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Well, I just searched the Comic Con panel schedules for Conan, the only references I found had to do with a “Remembering Frazetta” panel and some sketching lessons from an artist. I guess we won’t be hearing anything from the studio this year afterall.

    Very disappointing.

  • Steve Dilks

Ralph: Hardly suprising though. It would make more sense to attend next years with the completed film. You used photo shop(?) on your rendering of Thor which, though fine, I felt was a little over done. It detracts from what could other wise be a fine illo. You have an eye for character, how are you on backgrounds and perspective? I read once in “How to draw comics the Marvel way” (an excellent tome) that when confronted with a guy’s awesome interpretation of the Marvel hero pantheon in his potfolio, Stan Lee commented: ” That shows me nothing. Come back and show me some of the many everyday millions on the streets of New York, then I’ll be interested.”

  • Fayric

Steve, if you like to get an idea of how Ralphs backgronds and stuff are I recomend you click on Ralphs name and take a look at his site (or rather the art there). Very nice stuff there.

  • m

@ralph: nah it’s a marvel film, and not thats its a bad thing but if you watch the movies there hardly is a realistic approach to anything. Thor may fit in with the avengers cause kirby had that weird mix of mythological and alien (much like marvels early take on the character)in his drawing , well at least to me anyway, and that will justify his presence in this avengers movie. and due to my plummeting opinion of comic based movies in general(must be getting older i dont see the fun in them) I have no interest unless the hulk is the antagonist. and though I didnt care for ed norton as banner, what marvel did to him was shitty.I guess if people wanna celebrate Howards birthday it’s their business. I think he deserves exposure because of his large body of work and it’s influence in all genres, as far as his personal life, not my business , when hasnt there been a great writer who wasn t a bit off?Well it seems there is no conan this year at comic con.Hey if they had nothing ready , then nothing was ready no big deal.but it makes me wonder if we would have seen anything at all if it weren’t for the leaked pics that alot of people got uptight about. They had to cover their ass and do damage control.btw i put myself on this playstation network finally, and got my fight night character steve costigan’s (yup based on howards)ass handed to me by a guy using mohammed ali.if anyone here does that stuff let me know. but i warn you, i am a very very casual almost non gamer and i suck.

  • m

@ray: again best of luck to you ad your new wife, wish you the best and enjoy the weekend. @ralph :you have a lot of talent there, keep up the good work.@Simon i hope you are feeling beter. everyone else ( serg where are you?)enjoy the weekend , and maybe it’s not a bad thing there was no conan at sdcc. Im conflicted in that I wanna know enough so that I can make a prudent judgment to whether I’ll pay the 12 bucks to see it in a theatre( who am i kidding ill catch a matinee cheap bastard i am)or wait for rental. But the other side of me wants the suspense and doesnt want to know anything, like the good ol days befo’ the internet came and sucked the guts out it.enjoy.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Steve, I’ve been doing lately concept art pieces in many different styles to fill in a breach in my portfolio. I worked previously with graphic design but I moved on to illustration and now I’m trying to get into the gaming industry. As many clients won’t allow me to show their stuff, I found myself with little to show, so this year I’m doing personal concepts to exemplify different styles of drawings.

Some are just sketches, others are watercolor, some more stylized, others are rendered with a more realistic approach, but pretty much all of them are heavily digital (photoshop’s the industry standard).

As for Stan Lee’s argument, that reminds me what Bruce Timm, the creator of Batman Animated, thought about Alex Ross: “The guy has potential, if only he could get rid of the references”. Now I find Alex Ross one of the best painters of this generation…He’s not inventing the wheel, but he started doing something nobody else was doing at the time, and above all, he was doing what he does best: he’s an exceedingly talented copyist.

His critics will say: ‘But he’s not creating anything new, he’s just taking these pictures of models and putting them in uniforms!’ But wasn’t that what most classic painters did, drawing real people in different contexts?

So I guess every artist should find a way to balance their strengths with the demands of the ongoing market. It’s always advisable to take a hint from your employers, from critics, from other artists, whether they are Stan Lee, Bruce Timm or the guy next door, but ultimately, I think, there are no real rules for something so subjective as art. What may be interesting to someone, may be completely dull to the guy sitting next to him.

Fayric, thanks, I’m still on the process filling up the gallery. =)

  • Steve Dilks

Thanks, Fayric. Ralph: Some well worked on stuff there. I think “The ivory tower” as a piece has merit. I can apppreciate the time and effort that has gone into these, keep up the good work.

  • m

well as far as art’s subjectivity, as long as it’s not shit on a stick and called art, I’m fine with it. Alex Ross has a Norman Rockwell like quality in his art, which is very different to what the norm is for his chosen medium.Maybe his methods arent so unique but his approach is and I enjoy his work. His Conan, however I am not much of a fan of.I dont think Kirby, one of my ( and millions others) favorties was a fan of conan either, I have an illustration from his heroes and villains book and Kirby’s conan while interesting, looks like a caveman.btw, the name of the frazetta conan piece that sold for 1.5mil was his “destroyer ” one.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

As a huge admirer of Norman Rockwell, I share your feelings about Alex Ross, M. He may not be a visionary, but his eye for materials, light, color and composition is outstanding. On the other hand, I like his Conan, he seems to draw from Frazetta’s renditions, and unlike our fellow producers at Paradox, he understands Conan is not a pretty face in the slightest.

Steve, thank you, that’s very encouraging. That painting was from a time when I could spend months on a single image, and it paid off. Today’s market, however, dictates that getting more for less is the golden paved road and that time is money. Sadly it reflects everywhere, as we’ll no doubt be reminded when Conan premieres next year.

  • m

@ralph:I always thought the alex ross lithograph was more inspired by buscema than frazetta, does he have more conan pieces? I’ve only seen the one where he is swinging the axe.Frazetta had this amazing way of combing strength and motion in his paintings, giving them a life even the best of his contemporaries ( nothing against them I particularly liked ken kelly’s work) can’t match. It’s almost like listening to jimi hendrix and wondering how he produced some of those sounds….

  • Fayric

I think the fantasy genre is well suited for more conservative styles. Hardly no artists today would dare use the technical discipline of yester-centuries unless it was for either fantasy or some smart queer bias (however do I understand the artists that rather express their creative talent in more abstrakt style rather than just produce technical pefection).
An artist/illustrator/concept designer I really like is Yoshitaka Amano who created much of the “final fantasy” games design, Vampire hunter D and alot of other stuff that is loosely tied to fantasy concepts (like a few Elric paintings). My point is that he really go for an individual style and make some ground braking artwork out of his illustrations; but do I think “wow thats exactly how Elric should be illustrated”? No, because even if its a damn good picture I see it more as art than an illustration, and somehow I think Amanos illustrations dont stand a chance agaist those classic Michael Whelan paintings that in my oppinion is on the level of frazettas Conan paintings. I suspect we all like fantasy to ffeel timeless and yet familliar, and we imagine the classical ideals of balanced perspectives and technical discipline to best represent that timelessness. (funny thing is I have also seen some of Amanos Illustrations of a modern “old japanese fairytale” called “the dream hunters”, where he more than well managed to give that old timeless feeling, so its not that Amano is a bad artist. Just saying;)

  • Fayric

Its like when I see a paperback of a fantasy novel, and someone has tried to design it to look like a regular book with just a single colour and a nice looking text sayng what autor and title it is, and pehaps a stylized symbol or such, and I think “what is this crap?”. The cover really give an important first impression, and unless I now its good already, I need that cover painting/illustration to know what kind of book I can expect it to be. Its silly but I really judge them by the cover many times, at least for first impressions.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

I agree, Fayric. Fantasy has always been the high ground for classical painters. It’s no different today than it was in previous centuries when painters were comissioned to paint greek heroes and christian saints, just like superheroes today populate mass culture.

What’s different today, however, is the speed of the market. You see so little of what Alex Ross is doing because very few people can actually make a name for themselves in order to afford the luxury of taking an year to produce relatively few pages. Renassaince painters could take from months to years to finish a painting. Imagine someone like Alex Ross painting only 20, 30 paintings his whole life, it’s unconceivable.

There’s so much to learn in terms of anatomy, physics, geometry, perspective, you can hardly fit that in the modern concept of schools, which take no more than 4 years. The concept of mentors passing on their knowledge to a group of selected students dies off as the market becomes progressively more competitive…and that’s why it’s so hard these days to appreciate modern masterpieces from guys like Frazetta. His million dollar painting was quite a bargain, it will age much faster and much better with the digital era upon us.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

M, what I admire about Frazetta is the way he constructs the image. If you look at his sketchbooks and very rough drafts, you can actually see how he perceives volumes and masses instead of lines in confined space. With very little effort he can infuse movement and weight to his scribbles, so that anything becomes organic. That’s why his figures are so “fleshy”, so to speak.

This ability to deconstruct in order to reconstruct is a skill that takes us a lifetime to master, and one you’ll also notice this in the works of Michelangelo, Da Vinci and legendary Disney animators, to name a few. And to some, the ability to perceive the world differently is an innate talent.

  • Rabensblut

About John Carter. There was a film made, it is a Z-Movie and it is called Princess To Mars. If there wasn’t the terrible ending in the factory I kinda liked it. The end was rubish. The rest was quite watchable Z-Movie.

  • Steve Dilks

Rabensblut: I saw some clips on youtube a while back and was mortified until I found out it was just a cash-in t.v. movie and not the Disney/Pixar production. Looked really awful to be honest.
Ralph Daminiani: Any chance of a b/w sketch/illo. of Carnifexia, the evil warrior bitch from the “King Conan: Crown of Iron” screenplay?

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Sounds good, Steve. I’m actually working on some other female characters, it’ll be a good addition to the list along with M’s suggestion, Kull.
    =)

  • m

I am sorry ive not been here much M,just my faith in this conan film has kinda swayed to and tho and don’t like to come here and groan about this and that.I am more interested in the Thor movie to be honest with you.I think it could be ace :)
Captain America i am not to sure about though.I think that is a little in your face of a character for me.
The Avengers i am interested in as well.
I unlike most out there felt some of these movies that some are not keen on,i am suprisingly!
I think the problem is in this day and age we tend to expect to much which is there fault in a way by hiping them and getting people all excited and then the movie is not as expected.
I am one of these people as well of course otherwise i would be loving the new pics, news ect ect of conan but unfortunatly i am not sadly.
    Anyway M,
I hope that address is alive till friday night M.
I will pop back here soon.
And Ray,i hope you had a lovely wedding and all went well for you and that you wasn’t found lying in some ditch in the middle of the woods
cursing to the gods with all manner of threats of abuse :P
I wish you all the best m8 and fruitful and entertaining married life.

If it was my choice you should of been conan not momoa.. :D
    All the best to you!

No Conan news, so here´s a marvel of topic inspired by Ian;)
I think Capt America could be made one very intreersting movie if they did it well. They had the brightest star of superhero writers, ed brubaker really lift Captain America recently. The ting is he represent an hero ideal that is very rare and out of place in modern america, and to take those ideals, connected in a way with the american dream, and show how much the world and the heroes (the very concept of heroes) has changed, make for a very interresting story and also a reflection of our society. Make that hero a contrast to Iron Mans weapon industry and alcoholism, Iron Man as a hero of the modern world, and you have a damn good movie. Will the movie be like that? Probably not, but its definatly something Marvel has used in their comics. Im hoping for a movie or triology about the marvel campaign “civil war”, in the near future (if ´marvel actually manage to tie all these origin movies into something bigger than just the avengers.)

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

As far as I’ve seen Captain America is on the right track. Never been a fan of Captain America in his original concept, it’s a character that hasn’t age really well since his WWII introduction. And since his image is so intrinsically connected to that of Americs, the Bush administration didn’t do much for his reputation either. :P

We’ve seen a more likable Chris Evans in Comic Con, showing bigger arms than mighty Thor. We’ve seen a very realistic, yet very recognizable uniform. How terribly difficult it must have been to design a flag inspired uniform into something wearable on a live action feature. You need only to look at the 80′s to see how fugly it could have been.
We’ve seen an extremely tasteful shield that for the first time looks made of vibranium, and not plastic.

Red Skull will be the always amusing Hugo Weaving in MAKEUP, not CGI, and to the top it all, they’re going for a WW2 movie, resisting the temptation to throw in a modern era origin.

Imagine if the Fantastic Four was set in 1960′s like in the movie “Down with love”. It makes up for a far more stylish film, even in the in its family comedy undertones. Everything would look retro-futuristic down to the Fantastic Car and the Baxter Building. The humor could cheesy and over the top, and we would still buy it because of the time period. It suits that team so much better, just like Captain belongs in WW2 and the Cold War, and Superman looks so much better in the 40′s.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

But overall what I liked most was Ryan Reynolds reciting the Green Lantern’s oath from memory to the awestruck kid in the audience. And acting it out! That was the coolest thing in Comic Con, that would be the equivalent of Jason Momoa beheading a rabid fan. It just gives us confidence.

  • m

I would love to see marvel and dc superheroes done as period pieces like the hulk ( every version failed so far)He’s a very cold war nuclear jeckyll and hyde type. I’d also love to see Ian Fleming’s original 007 novels done as period pieces as well.I think some things though ometimes done well , by their very nature can’t be updated(ex: sherlock holmes just belongs on baker street in 19th century england, not fighting nazis or commies)

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Speaking of which, they managed to turn Sherlock into a hippie 007 wannabe even in the 19th century. Now that was one dumb boring movie desperately trying to be cool. Which is a perfect description of Guy Ritchie. And alas, there shall be a sequel. Can’t wait to see Professor Moriarty doing backflips.

  • Fayric

a WWII origin is a must for Cap America, but with the upcoming avengers movie they are bound to revive him in present day (like they have in the comic a few times as I understand it), and thats where captain america gets interresting, a hero of the 40s that gets a rude awakening, being revived in modern day war politics, trying to represent a country and ideals of almost 70 years ago. Also, in the current arc, cap cut all ties to american government when they tried to make him publically support the nukes over Japan in 45, so CA has no love for doubtfull governmental procedures.

Also I liked the Holmes movie alot, but I guess its not as true to the originals as they claimed. And Hippie? Well he wasnt “clean shaven”, but he was supposed to be kind of low and bummed out like a bored genius, the drugs though, are frequent in the original stories. The problem with the movie was that it set out to tell a story that would tell us what holmes would have been like if he was a real 19ct person; but he is just a fictional character so it gets a bitt unortodox. Some great acting and a beautiful art direction made it enjoyable to me (and the fact that they focused on characters as much or more than on the plot).

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Fayric, I must disagree. Holmes was indeed eccentric but his actual persona wouldn’t be so attractive to a younger audience these days.

Holmes is -not- an anti-hero. Just because he does drugs, and cocaine was actually prescribed at the time, does not mean he was a bizarre misunderstood genius. He was quite famous and very well respected in all Europe and was very proud of it. Although he was quite capable to punch his way out of a situation, he was first and foremost, a gentleman. He only gave in to a drug induced isolation whenever he felt no criminals or cases were good enough for him (yes, he was quite arrogant, but always rightfully so). What they did was creating a caricature of Holmes for comedy value.

I love Robert Downey Jr. but he is completely wrong for this role. Not only Holmes is very tall and lean (though yet athletic), with his distinguished hawk-like nose and high forehead (believed to be a sign of intelligence at the time), he’s also quite flamboyant and impecably neat in the way he dresses and shaves. The real Holmes would have taken Mr. Downey Jr. for a quirky representative of the working class.

What Ritchie did to Conan Doyle is what most authors do to Howard. He stripped the character from several traits that pertain to the era in which it was created and only keep those they find relevant to the story. Then they proceed to modernize them as much as they please, butchering the original character in the process. What remains is just a name and a kind of behavior that is no longer justifiable, so they come up with new motivations that usually make no sense at all.

So yes, there are some great actors, and the art direction is indeed beautiful, as is the soundtrack. But the story tries too hard to be intelligent and comes off as something Brain, the rat, would have devised to rule the world. And definitely not Sherlock Holmes…more like a Bizarro version of 007.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

If you’d like see how the real Holmes is like, I suggest you watch Jeremy Brett’s incarnation on TV, there are several episodes of the TV series on youtube. He’s considered to be the ultimate Holmes, though make sure you pick an early episode, as he physically didn’t age well for the role. It’s also easy to see why Ritchie wouldn’t produce anything with such a sexually ambiguous character.

But physically speaking, Basil Rathbone was the ultimate Holmes, his appearance was so strikingly similar to Sidney Paget’s illustrations that his image heavily influenced later depictions in popular culture.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

(By the way, don’t even get me started on Watson. ;D)

  • Fayric

Ah yes, I grew up with Jeremy Brett’s holmes on sunday evenings. Great show!
Anyway, I apologize if I was unclear, I did not think it was a good portarit of holmes. When I said “he was supposed to be kind of low and bummed out like a bored genius”, I meant in the movie, not the actual holmes. I also said it was like a story that tried to tell the story of a real ife holmes, not the fictional character, making it unortodox (to conan doyles holmes). so I am actually on your side here, just that I liked the movie for what it was, not as “the genuine holmes”.
I also agree that Robert Downey Jr was wrong as holmes, but perfect for the part in this movie (now that we have established it do not resemble the famous baker.st detective;). That may not be so strange though, because I heard Downey Jr stole the part and made it his own, and the others just liked his wersion of holmes, so they changed the movie concept to suit him (or they kind of made it up as they went along). Watson was good, they always make him to old stupid and jolly IMO. The plot was an obvious attempt at the steam punk trend, and I would really, really se a good steampunk movie soon, so that too was a step in the right direction, if not wery Holmesy. My problem is I enjoyed it to much to bother with the “purist” attitude. At least is was a good movie, and that get only to rare these days.
And I had forgotten the music, thank you for reminding me;)

  • Fayric

I mean, its so obviously not the “genuine” conan doyle Holmes, so just enjoy the ride.

  • Fayric

And I still dont see hippie in Downey Jr holmes.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Ah yes, I understand your points, Fayric. Yes, you could argue it’s a good steampunk movie, but I suppose I’ll need to watch it again in the future with different expectations. I wasn’t expecting something so Alan Moorish. I had actually read many of the original tales a few months before watching the film, so my opinion was totally influenced by how far they had drifted from them.

Glad you’ve seen Brett’s take on the character. When I saw the show as a child, before reading the actual novels I used to think he was way over the top. But as I grew older, I came to appreciate how he immersed himself in the role. Very theatrical and suitable for Holmes.

  • Ray

    Ian,

The wedding went great and the honeymoon was even better ;) I would have loved to have played Conan…especially if I was younger. Either way…I’ll take that as a huge compliment coming from a Conan fan such as yourself. Thanks! ;)

  • pubar

I do not remember which studio produced the film, but the leaders are poor advertising.

  • m

Sounds likea good time ray. remember it looks like paradox has a lot of howards heroes on the drawing board, there’s plenty of opportunity ahead.I havent seen sherlock holmes , and I’m really not in a hurry. I don’t care much for guy ritchie at all.those bbc tv shows ,when i do catch them are good enough for me.I have a collection of his stories too.Anyone remember that old danger mouse cartoon? Steve I have begun writing my little summary ( sparingly, I’m as slow as a turtle)for king conan. It seems there is no news on the conan front, but i guess aside a trailer and photos of the cast what more is there to really know before the movie comes out anyway?

  • Ian

If none of you have seen the trailer for Thor movie here it is.

    http://www.movieweb.com/news/NEJ6vw993y2zLS

  • Ian

And Judge Dredd is going to be Karl Urban who was the lead role in pathfinder!

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Very cool trailer, looks like Branagh found the right tone for this one.

  • Finn

Wow, looks damn good. At least they are doing Thor right (or right enough). And the guy they cast is believable as Thor.

  • Fayric

Oh, and by that thor trailer, in the box saying “latest stories”, they confirm that Del toro is working on the “at mountains of madness” movie! So the rumor and “future project” status is now his next movie, with Cameron to produce it, and… in 3D…:/ However I fully trust del Toro on this
    Here it is http://www.movieweb.com/news/NE5Kde5Ja37O7d
    Wonderful news!

Oh, and the thor movie looks OK i guess;)

  • Rabensblut

    Hoooray.

  • Rune

About the Thor movie, it looks nice, though as a someone interested in the nordic myths i really hat how they absolutely rape those histories. I know I shouldn’t see this movie as even remotely trying to stay true to anything from nordic myths, but I can’t help but feel that once again people over the world will get an absolutely wrong view on how the gods were viewed… Like the horned helmet has apparently become synonomous with the vikings when they never wore such tacky headdresses :) Oh well…

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

I understand your concern Rune, and I also hoped for something based on norse mythology. However, Marvel’s Valhalla is actually a sci-fi alien world where magic is actually science, so I understand the Kyrbian approach and even endorse it, given it’s supposed to be in the same universe the Avengers movie will take place. It would be really difficult to picture the actual mythological Thor in the same room as Tony Stark.
If they were to do a standalone movie, I would have gone with a more historical approach, it would be far more interesting than anything “Clash of Titans” could have been, even in the right hands.

  • m

This news about the mountains of madness is the best possible news ( though i’m not the hugest fan of cameron at least he puts 150% into everything he does and i respect it)in movies I’ve heard all day and deltoro strikes me as a guy passionate for the material. As for thor, I liked him above cap america and a little over iron man( punisher ,hulk, sub mariner are some of my other my fave marvel characters, not movies)and i think the movie at least will be at least as good as the first iron man, so it looks cool.I thought I read another reboot of punisher .But what about sub mariner? He was always heads and tails over freakin aqua douche, and he’s just as dated as cap america . Give him a movie. And yeah thor is about as far from the root mythology as you can get, but I think most people should know the difference. it’s almost like saying 300 is genuinely true to the historical battle of thermopolaye. ( which btw the sequel xerxes sounds too stupid for words. the sequel should’ve been about the decline of spartan society their defeat in sicily .how smart generals found weaknesses in the phaanx because spartans were not capable of changing their mentality. But no one wants to see the truth. They wanna see leonidas say cool things while he kicks ass.) I’m just messin the movie is fun.Any Conan news, Btw?

  • Ian

    M,
I liked Thomas Jane as the Punisher and wish they had him for the sequel. He is a convincing actor for that part.
Take away all that cheese and do a serious movie then you’d have a cracking film.
I really didn’t like War Zone.I just felt embarrassed watching it in front of my ex wife for some reason.Like “is this what ian likes so much about the Punisher”.
Plus,Doug Hutchison spoilt it for me,thought he was utter shit.
If i wanted to see another Punisher movie i’d like it to be a toe to toe against DareDevil.
Have the same dark moody feel as the first DareDevil movie but just bring up some story that the punisher has gone to far and needs to be stopped. All through the movie have it jumping to each character.
If it was done as a war against the two with the KingPin being behind it like some puppeteer watching them killing each other over and over, would be awesome.

I take it we won’t be seeing Crossbones in the Captain America Movie then :( .Was one of the reasons i liked the comics as a kid.
I do have some hope for Thor but i’ll hold back for now.

If DC have success with Green Lantern i want a Aquaman movie.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

I think they’d probably go for Wonder Woman before anything else.

  • m

ithought thomas jane made a good punisher too actually.I didnt see war zone so i cant judge the other guy but physically i thought he looked the part .Again thor looks cool I like those asgard sets, but again I’m not doing backflips over any of these marvel movies anymore.Maybe Namor, who is a very pulpish character would get me interested. I guess I should give ol aquaman a chance too.Mountains of madness has me a bit pumped ,if they follow through with it. this mark ruffalo guy they got for bruce banner doesnt seem right to me,though he does seem to have a bill bixby quality to his look.the hulk has never been done right yet though.

  • m

Man there really is nothing going on with conan though these days… if they are releasing it next year, and there was nothing at comic con, this blog is gonna be like a desert for a while….

  • Ian

    Don’t worry M,

The conan movie is not why i come back here anymore. It’s to chat with you guys and i think it’s the same with all of us in here.
So chin up matey :) :)
You know i too carn’t help feel the same way about the new cast too for Banner.I will hold my hand up and admit i don’t really mind some of the Marvel movies that have hit us so far.Yer,there are some that are a bit WEE BIT WOO mind! :P
But hey,at least we now have the chance to see are heros come to life after drooling over the thought as a kid. :D

  • m

I would say the ones i did enjoy of the marvel bunch would have to be xmen 2, spiderman1(hate the other 2) iron man ,the punisher, kinda like the incredible hulk but it still misses the mark, and the one i know I’m gonna get laughed at for…ghost rider. i dont know why, the acting and effects suck but it has this camp value thing i kinda dig.I yeah I definitely come on here right now to check in with the boys.those who do have my email can always drop a line there too,( and now that i am on playstation network getting my ass kicked in super street fighter4 and fight night4 by these semi pro gamers who must not see much daylight,)I am considering joining face book. Hopefully some news we can gab about will come up. did anyone else get the feeling after watching that thor trailer, that it pretty much summed up the whole movie?

  • Finn

I watch all of those comic book movies. They’re usually pretty entertaining, even the ones like daredevil that people consider trash. I had no problems with ghost rider or either hulk movie.

I watched solomon kane recently. It’s not a REH movie, but the character is close enough that I can identify it easy with the character from the stories. It’s a different version but, judging it on its own merits, it’s definitely watchable and enjoyable and I’d like to see the next two parts of the trilogy. Seems to have gotten good or decent reviews too. Problem is it cost 45 million but has only made 14 million so it is probably the first and last solomon kane movie.

  • Ian

    M,
If you are gonna get laughed at for liking that movie so will i because i too liked it.
JOHNNY BLAZE!SAW YOUR SHOW TODAY,ENJOYED SEEING YOU RIDED!
MAYBE YOU’LL RIDE FOR ME ONE DAY!HMMMM!!
Thats how many times ive seen ghost rider:P

I even liked DareDevil.Fantastic Four 2.The Incredible Hulk and most of the others.
I take them for what they are and thats why i enjoy them so much.
I don’t understand why they are rebooting spiderman though i liked the first two.Bloody reboots are getting on my nerves!

As for Batman i prefered Batman Begins to Dark knight and ive been a Batman fan since Adam West in the 70′s.I hope Catwoman is in the third with Batman now the villian.Forget the Riddler and the penguin.Just Batman and Catwoman is enough.
Remember in Batman begins when Batman is climbing the side of that building in the rain while looking into that apartment and then that boy runs out onto the verander?I think that could be a young Robin.
When i first saw that movie in the cinema i thought that straight away.

As for Superman Returns i get a lump in my throat when Superman is looking down on earth and listening to the cries for help and when he gets his strength from the sun rays towards the end.
Those for me are touching moments.
I’d like to see Brandon Routh return, thought he was a fine Superman even if the first movie was weak as piss those two moments win me over.

    Finn,
Solomon Kane i thought was a good movie and was pleasantly surprised.
I am just happy fantasy is starting to get it’s turn on the silver screen.

  • Ian

Sorry for the spelling mistakes above :)

  • m

Ian you are the man! I too prefer batman begins to the dark knight!I thought i was the only one !::) dont get me wrong they both stand as the best batman movies out there, but I often feel that batman begins doesnt forget it’s a comic book where the dark knight almost distances itself like it’s embarrassed of that fact .critics call that “transcending it’s genre” , maybe, i dunno. heath ledger made the second one for me, which works against it cause if you guys remember this batman series was supposed to be about batman ,not the villains. look what happened.I do believe you gotta take these comic movies for what they are, effect driven roller coasters, not high art. just have fun and like you had said ian enjoy that these guys are being made into these popcorn movies.i do think if solomon kane was distributed properly in the states it would ve made its money back, it almost seems like it was set up to fail.

  • Ian

You want to know why the Old Bats fell into the background once again?
It’s not just about superior acting skill,It’s the character himself.
Ofc there takes a damn good actor and one to get into the mind of the joker. But when it’s comes to the crunch it’s the charcter.
No matter where it is whether it be comics, cartoon,tv series or big screen he instantly pushes batman aside simply because he is the clown prince.
I could think of many actors who could fill his oversized shoes
and all would’ve had the same effect as Heath Ledger.
Ledger did an amazing job.The way he carried himself even when walking was superb. But i still think it boils down to the Joker himself that inflicts that!”Out of my way Bats,It’s my rollercoaster not yours this time”.
I mean when it’s bonfire night you watch the fireworks more than the fire don’t you? That the effect the Joker has on everyone :)
    Thats my view anyway :)

  • Fayric

Right you are Ian. They could exaggetrate bats paranoia and unsound want for eternal revenge on the underworld, but that would just make him comical (as in a caricature, not in comic book;). And yeah, just look at the first burton movie, the Joker outshine bats easily, and even in the surprisingly well done animated series when they got Mark Hamill to do the voice (could be due to great actors, but natrually, the clown tends to be more flambouyant).

I think we will se this in the the next Solomon Kane movie as well. Rumor say they are taking Kane to “Africa” (somewhere on that huge continent), so Im guessing they will take in Le Loup from Red Shadows as a flambouyant villain and let Kane act more like a grim batman (indeed on an eternal crusade agains the evils of the world).
[by the way, I have the best brother: I was babysitting his daughter one day, and my brother got me Del Reys "the savage tales of Solomon Kane" for it (babysitting that kid isnt much of a chore to begin with;). So I can finally catch up on mr Kane, Ive just read "red shadows" before.]

  • m

I enjoyed reading solomon kane: He’s very different though those driven characteristics that appear in all of howards popular heroes, His motives ( or what he tells himself his motives are, which makes him even more complex) are different than his fictional peers. Is he just on some personal crusade to right wrongs and fight evil or does he enjoy the fighting a bit too much? Does that add to his conscience and/or fuel his rage? Nothing on his movie here in the states though. Taranaich I read your review of the dvd on your blog that time forgot and I have to say it makes me want to check it out. hopefully we’ll see a release here.

  • m

And it’s true about batman I always thought it got stale that we constantly have to be reminded of his origin. As far as the villain i thought the way scarecrow and ras were portrayed was perfect in begins because they were the first villains in a batman flick that didnt steal the show from batman, it was batmans story and it worked. Now I dont know if two face had a similar effect , as I personally found him a bit underwhelming,But as you guys said the joker will always trump anyway ( and it is my own opinion the the joker is the victor in tdk, for reasons we’d have to start a freakin batman blog over)But any rumors, blogs on batman 3 what have they been about? who the villain is and whos gonna play them.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

Batman villains are extremely more interesting than Batman himself! In order for Batman to steal the show, he has to be portrayed as extremely disturbed and violent, otherwise he’s just a cookie cutter hero. That’s why Tim Burton succeeded in rebooting Batman in the 80′s and that’s why Nolan did the same in Begins.

Batman wasn’t on the spotlight in Dark Knight simply because he wasn’t the focus of the movie. There was a major theme going on about duality, terror, chaos, and Batman wasn’t the center piece, but instead, one of the several elements driving the story. It’s that kind of drama that turned it into a “real movie” instead of a superhero flick. I like it far more as an exemple of great filmmaking, but character wise, Begins is superior with the classic “hero’s journey”.

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

As for Bats 3, the villain has been confirmed to be the Riddler and Gordon-Levitt is a favorite for the auditions because of his role on Inception. That’s all we know.
No word on Catwoman yet, though it’s a risky choice, ever since Hale Berry touched the character.

  • m

Well I hope the riddler is the only rogues gallery in the flick but, not the only villain.whoever they chose, no matter how they fit or dont, nolan has a way of making them relevant , just look at ras al ghul. the politicians in nolans world are just as corrupt and one of the things I really enjoyed about nolans batman is that he gives gothams gangsters real credibility, not cookie cutter cartoon goon types you see in well, every other comic movie out there. I’d like to also see rupert thorne either running for mayor or D.A and start to see tony zucco consolidate the vaccum of gangsters left without a head in the jokers wake. How do any of you guys think Conan wouldve been if dc handled it instead of marvel?( just to try to bring it back to conan;))

  • http://www.ralphdamiani.com Ralph Damiani

I’m not sure it would’ve been too different, M. I think heroes have more to do with the contemporary reality in which they are written than the actual publisher. People tend to think DC is slightly more adult, and it’s true in the past DC’s universe was overall more grounded on reality while, Marvel leaned towards a slightly more fantastic approach. But Marvel has some pretty tragic adult characters, such as the Punisher and Cloak, so it’s not like Conan wouldn’t get the same treatment he did. Today, the difference between those universes are so subtle they could easily be the same.

I think in the beginning, the major appeal of Conan for the comic book industry, was it’s high fantasy setting with skimpy clothing. Back in the day people wouldn’t be too interested on anti-heroes, graphic novels, greek tragedy, character development, that wasn’t the stuff of comic books. Things were far more objective, there was the hero, the villain, the good, the evil and Conan would fit the mold regardless of the publisher.

  • m

I also tend to think that dc’s heroes take a more straightforward approach whereas marvels characters always have problems. In the 60′s this I’m sure was revolutionary in comics to see a superhero that was bullied or couldnt pay his bills like spiderman or an emotionally repressed scientist like bruce banner.Batmans origina was only that and not his focal point. Today everyone has angst and I kinda miss heroes being heroes, but it makes things interesting i guess. I think the best conan possible actually wouldve come from ec comics. Their weird science and fantasy and tales from the cryptand such were practically direct descendents of those weird tales pulp magazines and the artwork and covers were great. I’ve read a few of those in reprint, and I know they’ve at least done a bradbury story or two, I think their conan would’v really been on point.

  • http://www.myspace.com/hordemetal Big Daddy

With the lack of Conan movie news I guess there’s not going to be much to talk about on here til next year. I have a question for everybody… who on here likes heavy metal music? Just curious.

  • Fayric

I used to listen to it more than I do now. Dont have enough adrenaline to make it a permanent habit. Mostly I just return to those tired oldschool gothic bands of the 80es.

I do like the concept/storytelling theme that metal traditionally has embraced (like manowar and King Diamond among many others). We talked about this with fantasy art, that it held an almost conservative approach to art, and an emphase on technique and storytelling rather than all those postmodern cut-up fragments of culture (but I do like the postmodern too;). Point is, I realise metal is also part of that tradition, technique and storytelling. A good old yarn, a good old melody; you dont have to make it more complicated than that.

By the way Steve, did you see that band “Conan”? How was it?

  • Ray

I’m a fan of heavy metal. I use to play alot of it in some of the bands I played in growing up ;)

  • Ian

I used to be a speed metal follower in the 80′s.With the bullet belts, skin tight jeans and a t shirt of my faverite bands and all the that.
Ive seen the likes of megadeth live when it was the rust in peace tour.Been to Clash of the Titans and all manner of bands and such over the years.
Even shook hands with Tom Araya when they was practicing for Seasons in the Abyss.Such a little guy but with a massive respect for his fans.
Used to experiment with all the fruits back then,if you get my meaning :P (which has left my brain cells shattered!!and the weekend was for getting wasted with my mates in Sloans in liverpool. Then go behind to the 147 snooker bar where you had the Liverpool grindcore bands that used to hang out.Likes of Carcass,Napalm Death, anathema and such.
    Nice guys!!
But over the years ive calmed down. The hair and beard are still there(minus the bullet belt, skin tight jeans ofc ):P but the music has become more open minded.I think it happens to us all.
Lol,i used to be called MadDog as well.
    Heavens knows why.Haha!!
Don’t know why i told you all that but,hey there’s my youth in a nutshell :)

I think Metal as a subculture (if you want to call it that) age well compared to many other. Natrually, growing up means that you change in many ways, but from the people I know, heavy metal is a lifetime commitment.

  • niono

this site will never post new things.

i’m tired of enter here and see always the same!!!

post a picture of something or say the blog’s opinion abaut the movie.

    DO something

  • m

what news is there to report? How do you do something over which you have no control? there is nothing out there anywhere on conan right now, that’s not the blogs hosts’s fault. These douche bags at millenium or lionsgate for whatever reason did not deliver on the movie at comic con( and frankly there is no excuse if they can show clips of thor and a glimpse of cap america)and since then it seems all interest has dropped. I’m sure once there’s news, taranaich’ll jump on it.As far as opinions just read every post within the last year and you’ll get an idea where people are at with this.

  • Fayric

Right, the movie is wrapped, so there is no buzz about filming, no surprize actors, no last minute changes; its done for the most part, and now its just waiting. I hope the post production team makes better use of their time than the marketing/PR people.

I wonder. Saïd Taghmaoui say this movie is a huge production, but do anyone apart from Howard fans even care or know about it? Maybe we think its bigger than it is, and going public with it at comic con would just be embarrasing for a movie that is little better than “straight to dvd”. Perhaps Comic con didnt accept such a low grade movie to join. Remember this blog is just the product of a single enthused fan (turned slightly disillusioned, and we know the story), and that the production companies show little or no interrest in marketing this. Straight to dvd.

  • Fayric

Ofcourse, Straight to DVD releases can have a certain charm, and be quite decent (solomon kane, in most countries;). Just saying. I have hung around here to much to have a clear picture of what this movie is to a larger audience.

  • niono

i’ve lost all my hope in this move.

the pictures make me remember those hercules and xena series produced by sam raimi and i can not accept that Conan, wich is a great caracter, is being made into film of so bad quality.

this movie or will be a remake of arnolds film or will be based on Barry Smith caracter, but i dont like that conan very much, i like the savage sword , the drawing of Buscema wich have a grat conan ,a truly barbarian

ps: i do not like the firt arnold movie and do’nt have anything against the second one

pps: i’m not from a country that speak english so i apologize for the grammatical error’s, but i’ve to comment here because. here in my country we have discust abaut the muscles of new conan. And you?

i’m not criticizing this blog i’m just disappointed with the movie

thank for listen, and haw we say in my country VALEU

ppps: we do not let anyone explode our country and then give a monkey to thank’s

    huahuahuahuhau

This movie can’t be planned as straight to dvd because the budget is too big. I think it will have a theatrical release. They’ll do some test screenings and have an idea of how good or bad the movie will be received. They won’t let critics review it beforehand if they know it is bad. It may get booted out of theaters after a week or it might stay for awhile. I think the reason there’s no news is because they know what they currently have isn’t impressive. A lot of the success of this movie will depend on if they can put together a trailer that makes people want to go see it. But from top to bottom this movie has alienated and ignored the conan fan base. It may be too late to try to build anticipation. It makes more sense to stonewall us.

  • Ian

    Finn,

Are you saying that you think they might shelve this film?

  • Big V

I also was thinking this might be a straight to DVD movie, do to the lack of info, but 70 to 100 mill is kind of to much for a film like that. On the other hand, this same Co had a cool ninja movie in the works that was tight lipped also and it was sent straight DVD, but I don’t think they spent 100 mill on it. It was called “Ninja” and it sucked the big one.

  • http://deleted Stampfer

$ 70 – 100 Mio. is a big budget for a R-rated movie (a status which we can expect for Conan). Guillermo Del Toro’s next horror movie At The Mountains Of Madness will get $ 130 Mio only because he’s at helm as a famous director and everybody’s darling and James Cameron is producing. That’s perhaps a record sum for a R-rated picture. But who can say for sure that such figures are correct and true?

  • m

who knows what happened. what could they possibly be doing in post production right now… do they have a musical score yet or is that being worked on, there is no word on that at all

  • m

and this mountains of madness flick is the best news in movies right now

  • Big V

I think at first they said 100 mill, then they said it got dropped to something like 70 mill. I think the fact that we have been getting no info on this project may be proof that the budget has dropped even more. If that is what is going on I think it would be a good thing. I was doing some day dreaming, what would you guys think about a young Sonny Landham as Conan! I think he would have been bad a##. Sonny Landham is the guy that played the role of Billy in the first “Predator” movie.

  • Ray

One of the reasons it ‘may’ have not been introduced at this year’s Comic Con is because they are waiting to promote it for next year when it will be more effective based on the release date I heard they were going to release it on. If they are planning on releasing it in Aug. ’11, it would make more sense to promote it next year. It may go straight to DVD but I believe it’s more of a marketing strategy based on the ‘rumored’ release date. I definitely believe they are dragging the butts and should be releasing some more photos than what they are currently! ;)

  • http://deleted Stampfer

@ Big V: There were countless discussions about Jason Momoa’s acceptability as Conan because of his exotic looks, although he’s not only of native hawaiian/american ancestry, but also german and irish.
For this reason: How the hell did you come up with the idea of an native american actor (descendant of Cherokees and Seminoles) named Sonny as Conan, who has made very very explicit adult entertainment movies at the beginning of his career and who was in his most famous movie a sidekick of Arnold Schwarzenegger? This would be a very hard challenge for a Conan-movie’s marketing department ;)
Based on Sonny Landham’s look and descent he could have been a fine Turok, Son of Stone in his younger years, but this might be cliché-thinking.

@ Ray: Ron Perlman was at this year’s San Diego Comic Con to promote other productions. I can’t imagine that the actor wasn’t asked about Conan, but I don’t know any statements from him or further information about a possible Q&A.

  • m

@at ray if it is being released next year, it does make a little sense, but so are thor and captain america right? although it think those movies may aim at a younger audience based on the pg-13 rating

  • Ray

Stampfer: I can’t imagine that either.

m: It does make a ‘little’ sense and I’m emphasizing ‘little’ that they are holding out on promoting the movie. I believe Thor is set to release in May 2011, Captain America in July 2011 and Conan August 2011. We’ll just have to wait and see…but I do think this is the reason why we are not hearing much about it right now. Timing plays a huge roll in this.

  • Finn

Ian, no I can’t imagine them shelving it. I can’t imagine it going straight to dvd either. Solomon Kane was around 40 million but I think a big part of the reason it was released in theaters in europe but not america is that it was a european movie. This is an american, hollywood movie and american theaters are a pipeline for american movies. Even with a drop in budget I still think it is way too big to go straight to dvd. Also remember it has built in name recognition. Some people will go see it just because they remember the Conan movie from 25 or 30 years ago.

The sequel might be straight to dvd.

  • Big V

@ Stampfer, I am not new to this Conan blog and I do know that there has been countless discussions of Momoa’s acceptability as conan. I got my crazy idea of Sonny as Conan because IMO Sonny in his younger day, looked more like Conan then Momoa does now. It’s all good Stampfer, I know it will never happen, I was just day-dreaming. Oh and you can’t say Sonny would not have been well received because of adult films he was in. The first movie or movie’s Sly Stalone did were explicit adult films.

  • http://deleted Stampfer

@ Big V: My response was perhaps a little bit harsh, which wasn’t my intention. Your idea of casting Sonny Landham as Conan sets a funny and cartoon-like picture of desperate marketing experts in my mind (sort of my day-dreaming). This choice would duplicate the problems that the film-makers now have, I suppose. That’s all.
Landham was part of a great cast in the original Predator movie. You’re right with the hint that Stallone has successfully survived his “Italian Stallion”-Days and I want to add that Arnold Schwarzenegger’s career didn’t suffer damage although he was the object of some artistic photography in his early years of Bodybuilding ;)

  • Finn

In some kind of alternate universe where sonny landham is young again and more muscular, he would have been a good conan. He had the face and presence and manliness for it.

  • Big V

It’s cool Stampfer, no big deal. It’s just something about Sonny that tells me he would have been kick a## as Conan, but he is to old and fat now. I was watching the behind the scenes on my extended version DVD of Predator and the director said, he had to hire a body guard to follow Sonny around the set so Sonny didn’t beat the crap out of the cast or crew. That’s way cool!

Totally agree. It is more than our religion, it’s the only way to live. Anyway, everybody gets older, has kids, dresses differently…but if you are a real metalhead, it will always stay a part of you, cause it is rooted deep in your heart. I live metal, I play metal, I stay metal.
