Empire Online special about the Conan Movie

As part of a general Comic-Con preview, Empire Online will host a little special about the upcoming Conan Movie in their next Empire episode. As usual they also preview the content in a very low resolution, but the keen eye of our community member Stampfer noticed, that the image used in the article is an unseen image of Jason Momoa as Conan.

It looks like Millenium finally started giving out image material to he press, so we can look forward to seeing more material popping up, the closer we get to Comic-Con and afterwards. Jason certainly looks quite impressive in the latest images we saw of him, very much buffed up and his hair getting the proper post-processing dark treatment.

We are looking forward to seeing (and receiving? *wink at Paradox*) more from the movie.

By Crom Jason looks like..like..(ulp!) Conan! But that sword HAS to go. Valhalla Ray I here by charge ye with a quest to steal thy sword back.

What is the deal with that sword? Conan is a barbarian not a knight of the round table. The riddle of steel will never be told with that piece of junk.

Looks like it was left over from Highlander-or Braveheart. Obviously trying to go for the Celtic thing here. Just look at the size of that cross guard though! Looks like the photo is from the same shoot of the well recieved head shot. Looks to be some actual ruins (Greek most likely if they are) in the back ground.

Nah, that is the roman/greek set of the Nuboyana film studios.

Conan never had one sword. He had hundreds of fights and hundreds of swords. When he broke one on a beast from hell he simply got a new one. If he had no sword and his enemy did, he would simple slay him and take his sword. Now, didn’t it seem a little ridiculous that 25 years later he would find his dad’s sword in the first movie. Get rid of that whole “ridlle of steel” mentality. This is a new day, and I hope they get it right. The first movie was ok, the second one sucked big time, the TV show was laughable at best, and the cartoon was awful. Let’s hope by crom, that someone finally got it right.

sergioleone: Yeah, lets hope they play it that way.By the way, in the first film Conan never “found” his dad’s sword. It was in the hands of Rexor-Thulsa Doom’s nasty henchman. The sword Conan found in the tomb was Atlantean in origin.I remember when me and some friends watched it on video many years ago once they all thought the skeleton on the throne was Crom. “Listen!” they would screech, rewinding for the hundredth time as I tried vainly to explain, “he looks at him and says-Crom!” I think there was some poor editing in that film. Its hard to understand fully -who and what- if you just casually watching it.

Looking better and better! I actually like the sword. I think it’ll be just “a good sword” he uses rather than “The Conan Sword”. I want a high rez version of this and some footage!

My fears concerning the set design / artwork seem to be confirmed. The sword has this airbrushed plastic look (we’d be lucky to have a Braveheart/Highlander sword here…) and the set…hm.
Have to take back all my lamentations (heh) reagrding Momoa though. He definitely starts to look the part. Even if he stole Jake Gyllenhall’s crimson scarf.
Nevertheless, Ron Cobb (btw nice quote waldgeist ;) ) ftw!

Momoa does look very impressive in that particular pic.Hopefully he got something out of reading howard on set too, so maybe we’ll all be in for a treat.as far as pics and info, they’ve been getting better.I’m regaining some optimism (instead of impartiallity) that at the least , it will be entertaining to watch.I’m sure the swords will look better once in use. And like the old one,it’s a better chance now it’ll be right in some ways and wrong in others.I dont care so much if its better or worse than the original, but i do hope its better than destroyer and kull and red sonja. You know, that scene in conan with the atlantean sword I always kinda presumed it was king kull sitting there and that was a sort of tomb.

Jason Momoa Is going to be a terrific Conan and I feel the movie itself is going to be entertaining and filled with action.Although I love Robert E Howards writings,I’m not really concerned as to how much the film stays true to the Howard Conan canon because I’m almost certain there will be elements from various Conan tales in the film.As long as it’s not corny and it’s not boring is all I care about because I must say,in my opinion, there were some pretty boring moments in CONAN THE BARBARIAN and some pretty corny moments in CONAN THE DESTROYER.Personally,I think this new Conan film will make up for all of that.

I am disappointed, Jason Momoa looks ridiculous, he is not convincing, sword is ridiculous, set design also seems ridiculous to me … I do not understand why you are all thrilled!
A lot of everything reminds me on Prince of Persia((

Hey Max,inspite of your negativity I bet you’ll still go see the movie won’t you?

  15. Donald
    At 7. July 2010 16:56 o'clock

Despite my previous opinions I’m actually impressed with Momoa! As previously said the sword is simply a tool to Conan and there isn’t any attachment and to say there is would be borrowing from Conan the Barbarian! I would think that perhaps there will be several swords throughout the movie! Despite having liked Conan the Barbarian as a child I too would like to see something fresh and different like everyone else! As far as the sword goes, there are usually several sword designs for use on the set. They wouldn’t use a steel, sharpened sword for an action scene, that would be foolish! Even in the old movie they had some wooden, and some fiberglass swords for different scenes. They would reserve the steel sword for closeups etc… So that may be the cause for the fake airbrushed look in that particular shot!

Mad Max: I too am a little concerned about the “Prince of Persia” type of style. I looked earlier on this blog at Conan being done in the same vein as that movie and “Clash of the titans”. If we are looking at that type of filming style this will bomb, no question. I think Momoa will be ok-given a meatier script and some tough direction he could really pull it off. He is also starring in “Game of thrones” adapted from George R. Martin’s epic fantasy novel. That also stars Sean Bean and I believe it is a mini-series.He filmed it prior to doing “Conan”. Type casting or just getting to grips with playing fantasy’s mightiest hero? Donald: On the set of “Conan the barbarian” Milius had his actors using real “blunt” swords uring takes for more realism. Sandahl (Valeria) Bergman lost a finger while rehearsing a scene with a stunt man. M: Maybe the Atlantean sword finds its way handed down the generations in times of great need. Perhaps it was the blade wielded by Arthur himself-the legendary Excalibur(?)

  18. Stampfer
    At 7. July 2010 21:31 o'clock

According to the Wikipedia site for the new movie Steve Jablonsky will write the music for Conan.
The 39-year-old american composer works for Hans Zimmer’s film music company Remote Control (formerly known as Media Ventures) and is best known for his scores for movies by producer Michael Bay like The Island, Transformers, Transformers: Revenge Of The Fallen or Texas Chainsaw Massacre (directed by Marcus Nispel).
I think this information is not for sure or official. It’s only Wiki and I can’t find any confirmation. On the other hand it’s a first clear statement from a popular source.

  19. Ralph Damiani
    At 7. July 2010 21:39 o'clock

Even if Hans Zimmer himself was hired to compose the score, the original Basil Poledouris soundtrack is unmatchable. It’s one of the best scores in movie history in my humble opinion. A classic.

Transformers? Seriously? Give us Howard Shore. =(

    At 7. July 2010 22:05 o'clock

@steve: its not a bad thought completely, it falls into the whole origin of myth bit like that scene in the movie. Crown of iron is coming along slowly, and there are things I appreciatelike :conans blooming friendship with metallus, which i suspect will not last as this is some sort of microcsom of the civilized vs the barbaric, but conans rise as a soldier is spot on with milius consistency. where I feel milius is a bit weak is in the myhtological parts, such as his frost giants daughter interpretation. and the kon , son of conan stuff never worked well with me even in the literature.that one battle that conan is on the defense and loses I suspect was a sort of reversal of venarium, with conan fighting on the civilized side. He’s more a stoic soldier who loves his son to the point of softness ,its a distraction and i dont think its as crucial as milius makes it out to be. conan was just made king of zingara in it(where i’m at) and that suits me as i think they made aquilonia more an empire than a kingdom or country .@ralph:Transformers score isnt bad, the orchestrated parts anyway.I wouldn’t even look for it to match poledouris score, as long as its a solid unique effort I’ll be happy. The only thing that bugs me is the original script was made by the guy who did sahara. There’s alot of “new blood “( a bad pun maybe) as far as larger studio pics are concerned, hopefully these guys did their homework and looked at all the things that are wrong in this genre, who knows. And good to hear from you don!

Wouldn’t it be fun when arnold comes out of office in Jan that he confirms that he is finishing the saga by making Crown of Iron with James Cameron.
That would put a spanner in the works and make me chuckle..

  22. Ian
    At 8. July 2010 04:27 o'clock

In my opinon eventhough many say Arnold is not the Conan that Howard wrote about. It is clear that his respect to the first film which gave him that huge stepping stone is obvious in the link below.

    http://www.originalprop.com/blog/2009/08/25/twitter-arnold-schwarzenegger-tweets-about-conan-movie-prop-sword-from-the-governors-office/

As some have mentioned about Momoa’s sword above.I hardly think that he will have the opportunity to mantle such a beautiful sword as Arnolds.
And from what i remember from reading Conan. He discovered that Atlantian and fought off it’s bearer in the underground tome while being chased by the wolves.
Sadly, howard gave no mention afterwards in his other tales from what i remember about the sword.

@Ian:Actually,”the thing in the crypt” was never a Howard story at all. It was a Carter/DeCamp bit they put in to fill a young conan’s chronology, actually I think it’s one of their better stories.Conan never did wield one specific weapon, and thankfully so as it’s antithetical to his character.Arnold is no more Conan than Decamps or Buscema’s Conan is but it’s an interptretation, and Arnolds stands as well as any version of Conan that a person can enjoy.Hopefully Momoa’s will too.”I suppose nothing hurts you.”Conan: “only pain!”

  24. m
    At 8. July 2010 08:30 o'clock

And arnold should be more concerned with the state of california than with taking a picture of his Conan sword ,tweeting that he keeps it there.he’s looking at it singing the bruce springsteen song “glory days”!

  25. Rabensblut
    At 8. July 2010 09:53 o'clock

Sprague de Camp, Lin Carter: “the thing in the crypt” written 1967. Chased by wolfs founds refuge in a cave where he fights a mummy of an ancient chieftain defeating it by throwing it to the fire. Just read the story, quite a nice one. I have to say that it is not Howard, but has a good Howardlike feel to it. The same goes to “Legion of the Dead” (1978) (with Lin Carter). Two of the best stories not written by Howard.

Even Howards choise of weapons can be a bit odd at times. In Hour of the dragon they use full plate mail, basinet helms and wizored helms as well, together with lots of bowmen and pikemen legions, it all just feels uncharacteristicly medieval to me. (and as king, Conan do sport a great twohanded sword). There is also some stories where they have crossbows a few thousand years before they were invented (but what the heck, I can accept magic, interdimetional beast and the occasional dragon, so why not crossbows, eh?). I think swords and other simple weapons were probably not very well crafted unless you were a noble, and in the kind of professions Conan mostly had, he would most likely loose or break a superiorly crafted sword in a matter of days, so why bother?

  27. Fayric
    At 8. July 2010 12:57 o'clock

I mean, in the good old days they had to take a break from combat to bend their swords straight after just few hours of battle.

Just checked hour of the dragon, Howards words are “basinet helms” (probably bassinet helm) and a “vizored salade” (probably a salade helm vith visor). Definatly medieval helms if google picture search is anything to go on, but then again, I suppose Howard “translate” in to the closest equaliant type of helm that the reader could refer to.

  28. Fayric
    At 8. July 2010 13:11 o'clock

Sorry not even strictly medieval armour, more like late medieval/renaissance (like what they had in the movie “Excalibur”, thats Howardian Conan for you)

  30. Finn
    At 8. July 2010 16:58 o'clock

Fayric, it is only odd if you learned about european military history. Most people haven’t, and the sources howard had access to 80+ years ago were much more rudimentary. With fantasy usually everything goes up to gunpowder and steam power and electricity. What really bothers me is when I’m watching a movie set in the 1800′s or earlier, and there is an elaborate stone door or trap mechanism that does all kinds of flashy sliding and moving that would be unrealistic even if it was plugged into a wall. Or the main character is outnumbered so he suddenly creates some new invention that people at that time didn’t have to win the battle. Then I go “you can’t fucking do that shit!” Unless there is magic and it is fantasy. Then I can accept all of it, haha.

Well it made me smile to see he still stands proud owning the sword
Whether he should be focasing on current affiars or not.:)

The truth of the matter is. (as i bleed peoples eyes) Even if this is a success it won’t live as long as the 1980′s version thats for sure And they will expect someone of simular size to replace arnolds sandels.
    Its plain to see.
Ive said this before i know but arnold has claimed the rights to being the only conan when it comes to film, like Christopher Reeves,Linda Carter,Adam West for instance,so on and so forth.
As tongue and cheek they where. My love for those characters just progressed over the years.

I love the Conan books and the movie, despite it not being 100% true to the source. But already the Nispel version isn’t true to the source either. In fact it looks way off the mark.which is upsetting a lot of folk all over.

And Ralph said it right (the king keeps his sword in his office.)
    Sorry but thats me :P

Just seen and read that “Empire” magazine article . Momoa has some scars (err..lots) and they look rubbish frankly. Close up he does not look so toned and theres a small pic at the bottom of him sitting on a horse waving a sword trying not to look scared while wearing that horrible arm gauntlet. The article itself says there will be an appearance at comic-con with maybe one or two stars and lots of multi-media representation from Dark Horse and the online Age of Conan crew (Waldgeist, better book a flight!). On the whole I’m still not convinced. I guess one reason the film won’t be released for another year is because Paradox want to merchandise the hell out of best they can first. I wonder if in twenty years time they will be mentioned in the same breath as L.Sprague de Camp when it comes to talking about the Conan legacey. Simon: Recieved your book “Stealer of the seasons” today. Look forward to reading it over the weekend, thanks.

  33. Fayric

Finn, you are right. The Conan stories has the beauty of being set to long ago for any historian to come along and say “that was not the way it was”. Is it true that that was one of the reasons Howard didnt set the stories in a known period of our history?

Looks like Comic con is on then. Joint venture with dark horse and age of Conan? Mr Malmberg is a clever business man; with paradox owning all the rights for “Conan” he can have a finger in 3 different medias presenting the Conan of tomorrow (perhaps a bit naive to think he can guide the production that much, but he can guide the general outline and focus, especially when it comes to promoting the image of Conan). Ofcourse this could be a good thing if Paradox had a passion for making it right and proper instead of just making as much money as they can get out of this. So, eh, lets pray to whoever listens ;)

  34. Fayric
    At 8. July 2010 19:58 o'clock

    cont.
It could be worse: most movies get a crappy game licens and other cheap merchendise to milk the supposed succes, but here its atleast differnt creators that each work individualy and , mostly have some sort of passion for the original merial (yes, I think those screen writers and even Malmberg has gotten quite a few good times out of howards yarns in their days, no matter the end result).

  35. Fayric

Here is a thought for you: Who should write the novelization of the script? I know, its cheezy, but for that animated beowulf they got one of my favourite writers, Caitlin Kiernan to do the novel (also Neil Gaiman had written the screen play, not to the best of his ability though).

What do you think, who would be best suited of modern writers to save this script in book form:D Who could take such a beating?

The idea of a” lost “age allowed Howard the freedom to combine the historical with the mythological and the “weird” aspects. HIs formula is just executed so well it’s almost compelling. You can almost believe that these adventures could have been real myths that couldve had a real origin in history( something Kull could not accomplish, that was more fantasy). I think Milius was driving at this aspect of howard as a premise in conan the barbarian, as there is this prehistoric iron age aspect ( that howard foregoes for fantasy’s sake)to it, and the fantasy scenes( thulsa doom a snake ,the witch that bangs conan, seeing valerias ghost) are far more subdued than in the stories.I dont think you would see many winged apes in this version of conan, though from what I’ve been reading in crown of iron( a far more political work so far) there is room. It’s as if milius was seeking some sort of root to the tales as if to say the myth is the tower of the elephant but it likely went down like this 12000 yrs ago.A “lost age”also allows ,like you guys said ,”lost technology” of civilizations so sword making and crossbows have room to be there.

  39. m
    At 8. July 2010 23:29 o'clock

I think with this film , they may be tying in to more modern looks at conan, at least visually. But whats more important in this movie , the story or hows its executed in action, dialogue and atmosphere. in other words can the latter compensate if the story seems a bit flat? and will conan/howard fans be able to compromise that possibility in particular? we know it wont matter to mainstream audiences.Which brings me to something else i’ve been pondering. even if this is a lousy movie, I think its gonna make a boatload of money. 1 cause it’s conan and people know conan,if nothing else. 2 its going for an r rating, making it more intense(theoretically) and violent than the average marvel comic movie nonsense being put out and i think there’s a demand for something like that. One thing i think millenium ( and even nispel)films can do as evidenced by rambo is put out a ballsy flick, and I think that this conan may at least has that, judging by its rating.and i know there are many other great aspects to a good conan story, face it violence and balls are integral to how the plot is carried,And the mainstream viewer who likes action movies in general will appreciate that.but again, “we shall see” .Kull was freaking neutered bigtime!

  40. m
    At 8. July 2010 23:38 o'clock

@fayric:Never was a fan of “novelizations”. my brother is into star trek he had alot of that stuff. wouldnt know who to get for something like conan, as judging by what i read about conan of venarium , the well of decent conan writers is fairly dry.has anyone read a real good conan story that was written in the last five years?(comics don’t count in this case)I’d love to know.I read the rambo 3 novelization some time ago by none other than david morrell himself( the author of first blood) and I thought it was dogshit. And I was 11 or 12. A buddy of mine had the conan the barbarian novelization I flipped through it but I dont remember it well either. decamp wrote it right?

  41. Finn
    At 9. July 2010 00:28 o'clock

It is a lot easier and quicker to just copy earth’s history and change the names (or use less common names) than to create new shit. But at the same time, you have the freedom to create and innovate without being tied down to a period of history (“they didn’t have crossbows yet!”). That seems to be what REH did, that seems to be what happened with Forgotten Realms, and probably a lot of other shit. Much easier than creating something like Avatar.

Also, fuck california, focus on the sword

  42. m

One thing I haven’t seen mentioned in ANY of the forums anywhere is….Will they open the film with the Nemedian Chronicles’Preamble?(Know O’ Prince that between the years when the oceans drank Atlantis, etc;etc;)I,for one, will be EXTREMELY disappointed if they don’t.As a matter of fact,it could almost kill the whole movie for me,eventhough I’m looking forward to it being a really good film. All I’m saying is THEY HAD BETTER OPEN THE FILM WITH THAT because you cannot open any Conan story, whether on paper or film, without it.What do you guys think?

  47. Chuck Boone
    At 9. July 2010 06:06 o'clock

Also,do you think it should be written in script on the screen for the viewer to read or recited or both?If recited, what type of voice should they use?Personally,I feel it should be recited.I really liked the way Mako recited it in the opening of Conan The Barbarian but in Conan The Destroyer he recited rushed and without any emotion whatsoever. What do you think?

  48. m
    At 9. July 2010 08:45 o'clock

Thats funny I remember thinking mako called it in when reading destroyer.it depends on who reads it.do you want a stuffy but elegant guy like christpher lee or an asian guy like mako( now dead) . a woman does it in the ps3 game, not that great but not as bad as i thought either. a woman narrated the beginning of fire and ice and i thought it was rather creepy. but i could sit there and read it as well . but yeah you need that in the opening, and I suspect if nispel uses it, nispel will use more of it than milius did.

  49. Finn
    At 9. July 2010 08:53 o'clock

chuck boone I would like to hear bob THE BEAST sapp recite the preamble. No one can beat Mako but he is dead so sapp is the next best thing.

also, I found this website full of REH quotes, I’ll paste a sample

    http://en.wikiquote.org/wiki/Robert_E._Howard

“Money and muscle, that’s what I want; to be able to do any damned thing I want and get away with it. Money won’t do that altogether, because if a man is a weakling, all the money in the world won’t enable him to soak an enemy himself; on the other hand, unless he has money he may not be able to get away with it.”

  50. Fayric
    At 9. July 2010 12:08 o'clock

I thought Steve had already decided it will start with the “Cimmeria” poem. Dont know if Momoa could do it, but why not let Ron Perlman recite it to baby conan, as if Corrin had written it (I think Ron has the voice for it). I think the familliar part of the Nemedian Chronicles will probably be cut down to a text saying “5000 years ago!” :D

I dont agree with that quote Finn, just look at George Bush Jr, destroying two countries and comitting crimes against humanity, and now hes just living the good life at a ranch or (even worse) giving lectures about how he got away with it.
I also dont think Arnold is a good choise for Conan, he lack that predatory fire and alertness that set Conan apart from ordinary fighters, in short, he is slow and dull, and he could not for his life give a rumbling laugh the way Conan can (Yes, Arnold “acting” laughter must be the most emabbasing moments in the history of movie making. (of course, if they made it like “Barbarian” he would not need to be a real Conan, because he didnt get that predatory instincts growing up like a slave/pitfighter; but we already have that movie).

  51. Chuck Boone
    At 9. July 2010 12:17 o'clock

What about John Rhys-Davies reciting it??? I think that would sound cool.He damn sure has the voice for it.

Ian, I dont know FFeist more than by name, so Il just have to trust you on that.

I was thinking Dan Abnet would probably do a great job. He has mostly written Novels for the warhammer game world, and mostly to the futuristic version. I guess writing for a miniature wargame that has become computer games and RPGs is not a good foundation for credibility, but the way I see it, its not unlike what Howard did with the pulp era. Also Abnet is getting much praise and appreciation despite his rather small sub genre. Old var veterans is writing to him asking where he served, but poor dan have to admit he never was in the army (hes just a really good writer that can enter the world he writes about as if he was there himself. Yhe kind of writer that dont just write about people and situations, but really bring them to life. (and ofcourse the warhammer world is a mix of cliches and broad cultural influence, much like howard fasioned his stories.

Age of Conan marketing this movie, really? They are really desperate. I wonder if they’re gonna remodel their King Conan after Momoa.

Ian, I’ll agree Arnie and Christopher Reeve made their characters iconic and are hard to replace. Linda Carter was a woman with that kind of natural beauty that is becoming really rare in Hollywood, in the age of surgery. They get to make such claims.

But Adam West certainly doesn’t! Christian Bale would scrub the floor with him any day of the week. Heck, even Michael Keaton would. The campiness made that show a success, not the actors.

As for the enlarged pictures looking not so good, let’s give the guy the chance to act in a trailer. We all know he looks passable at best, but the actual footage might surprise us.

May I remind you that Arnie recommended the bodybuilder champion Ralf Moeller for the infamous TV series and we all know how that went.

(As a footnote, the poor guy couldn’t do much with THAT premise for a TV show). He did better in Gladiator.

Ralp, I dont think its age of conan marketing the movie, its more like Paradox make use of all the things that have their trademark Conan logo (Dark horse comics, age of conan, this movie). It could get really funny if people start thinking its a movie based on a game, and that Momoa is just a marketing Cos-play guy. He could battle it out with some bad ass anime school girl.

Waldgeist, are you going there with some age of conan people (or just for fun?) You got nispel to anwser some of our questions once, perhaps this could lead to you getting Momoa to tell us his understanding of the character he is playing?

Good point by the way: surely this movie could not possibly get worse than that Ralph Moeller Series. But then again I know some conan fans that didnt mind that show to much, because Moeller has alot of muscle, and that is basicly all that matters in conan (after all, we can find many quotes in the original tales saying Conan had alot of muscles, so what other attributes could he possibly have?)

(by the way, that was an attempt at irony).

Glad you added the irony warning, I’ve seen flamewars for much less. =)

Yes, please someone needs to go there and ask Momoa and Nispel the following questions:

-”Conan is a loner, a womanizer, a mercenary, a thief, an anti-hero whose heroic deeds served his own selfish needs more than any sense of honor or duty. Previous attempts made to sweeten Conan and make him more social and likeable, as well as politically correct, disfigured the character, some beyond recognition. How are you going to address this?”

-”Conan is grim and taciturn as you’d expect a barbarian to be. But he is also a skilled tactician, a smart warrior and he has a dark sense of humor. Those aspects of his personality were partially or fully neglected in past adaptations. How does this one compare?”

If only they could answer those in a reassuring way, consider me sold for now.

[...] Earlier in the week, Waldgeist posted on the upcoming snippet and exclusive photo of Jason Momoa’s Conan in the August 2010 issue of Empire. I got the issue today: in addition with apparently conclusive confirmation of Conan’s presence at Comic-Con, there are a few hints of what to expect at San Diego. Marcus Nispel’s Conan arrives at Comic-Con with something to prove. Fans of Robert E. Howard’s stories have thus far been skeptical about the decidedly non-Howard script (by multiple authors, Sahara writers Josh Oppenheimer and Thomas Dean Donnelly chief among them), and Nispel’s CV of Platinum Dunes horror remakes and flashily muddled Vikings-versus-Native American epic Pathfinder has done little to inspire confidence.
