Frank Frazetta has passed away

Today, after having a major stroke, Frank Frazetta, the definite master of heroic fantasy art, passed away at the age of 82. Mr. Frazetta was a gifted artist from a very young age, being able to paint out of his mind, without referring to photographs or puppets. In addition to that, all of his art has a phenomenal kind of fluid motion frozen in the moment, that immediately captures the viewer with it’s energy. He is the inspiration for so many great modern fantasy artists and his contribution to the world of Conan is invaluable. For many people Frank Frazetta defined the look of Conan and the grittiness of the Hyborian Age. His image on the lancer paperback back in the 1970′s were one of the reasons they became such a major success and started a Conan boom unheard off until then.

Rest in peace Frank Frazetta, creator of worlds. Your art will continue to inspire and I hope you are united with your loving wife, wherever you are now.

  • Steve Dilks

Frank Frazetta. The name alone conjures up countless iconic images, from beautiful lush primordial landscapes to savage primeval battles so essential to heroic fantasy and sword and sorcery. Blessed with a vivid imagination he was an unparalled talent- a true master of his craft.Hail,Frank.

  • m

@ hobie go back two threads and read about from halfway through on around post 120 or sothrough the end) 179!!) there’s lively discussion on this.I found out about frazettas death reading on a site what someone thought of Momoa pics.( needless to say the guy didn’t like what he saw and said” Now I see what killed frazetta” I was like”frazetta died?” and looked it up)Was looking through the frazetta book I had last night, mainly pencil sketches.what a unique style he had. every brush stroke had vitality and motion. you really got a sense of the strength of his heroes and what rewards his women could offer… and I wouldn’t even want to glance towards his beasts!

  • m

@ steve : I am curious to your thoughts on the Momoa pics…I’ve been ramblin about it yesterday.

  • Steve Dilks

Hi M, been over to see my father who lives in Greece so not had much of a chance to get involved with the somewhat intriguing and lively action here! I had a quick glance in a an internet cafe and needless to say was stunned by Frazetta’s passing. I was almost depressed when I came across the pics of Momoa. The whole thing stinks to be honest. Nothing looks or feels right.Take a look at those idiots on horseback and their dress! That says middle ages tv show to me not Hyborian age.Whats Momoa doing on top of that horse? Notice the way he’s sat there motionless whilst some moron holds the reins in case he falls off and breaks his twiggy little legs. What the hell is that thing on his left arm? They cant even be bothered to CGI out his tatoo so stick some gladiator type thing on him.Woods? Woods always spell trouble for a fantasy flick. Cheap location filming, cheap costumes and cheap unconvincing looking weaponry. I’ve seen worse ’80s Conan b-movie rip offs that look more convincing than this. I desperately wanted to beleive, but seeing Momoa dressed up like that does nothing. He does not convince me at all. I saw more convincing looking guys strolling on the beach the other day who could have played Conan. Crom laughs at us.

  • m

yeah but how do you really feel:)?

  • m

As I said in the other posts, the truth is I can’t tell whats happening in those pics for me to judge. there are things i see that I like and there are things I see that i don’t like. I am gonna hold off on chopping my feet off for a while…you know that my hopes weren’t really high for this( esecially when I first showed up here, I bashed it based on what we heard as much as anyone) but I’m trying to give it the benefit of the doubt lately as much as possible.I never expected it to align with my own personal vision of conan nor what I thought howards conan may be, But id do intend to keep my expecetation high that it will attempt to resemble at least the mood and worlds of Howard. I didn’t panic when I saw the pics though, and as I told Ray whoever did it, did so in poor taste. so to speak

  • m

sorry one more thing then off to work..any one read the article on frazetta with all of the comments by artists and actors and such? Though I am a huge fan of John Milius’s conan he made comment like ” though i could never put his(frazetta) work onscreen , when i made conan the goal was to mix frazetta and wagner.”Anyone notice how he left out Howard?

  • Ian

Ian here again to let some steam off:P

Despite the whole bad acting Arnie had for that movie. It’s still a powerful film of it’s day regardless.Even when the music starts it hits you right there in the chest. And not to hear that in 2011 is gonna even hurt me more that i cannot lick my wounds after leaving the cinema.
I saw 300 and didn’t know what i was in for.And when left that place i felt primitive and certainly blown away and some promise that Conan will follow suit.
    Like ive said before.2011.Looks turd!
Everything Steve and Finn say backs up my arguement over this project.
Conan deserves more than this.At least in 1982 they did then like they should now.
I feel, after waiting for crown of iron to be given this is like being kicked hard in the stomach as i sit stratching my breard looking at my much loved figurine of the character.
And i cannot look anymore at them photos for its like kneedles in my eyes.
It’s an insult. And if it does falls let it be a vital lession. :(
    Runs away crying :P
I know i change like the wind over this subject but i am Sooooo frustrated.
Well,at least Batman is in tack./sigh with relief:)

  • Ian

Ive gotta stop doing this ranting for its the only place other than youtube i do it.And ive closed 3 accounts there.
I need to calm myself otherwise i am heading for blood pressure tackle..lol
    :P

  • Ian

And from the mist they came.
Thunder cracked the sky like a thousand torchured souls
    and death’s pressence followed.
He stood gazing as the hooves of doom gave a distant memory of time now forgotten
as they came forth to a sudden halt looming
On a steed that told many tales of it’s own.
The one leading this wretched band of devily was cast
in armor from the pits of hell.
Reaching down from his heavy steed bared wittness to an old
tale.A Weapon of acient time lost.

“Comes with us brother M,for we have a darker tale to tell.
Are quest is to fid the giants who scorn the name of are king”.

  • m

Wow I’m quite moved by your poetic approach Ian. And rant and rave away man, you have a God given right to.I understand the hostility, if the movie even remotely sembles those pics it will be conan by way of ed wood( at least the dialogue will be funny). They are candid cheap shots and a big sucker punch so to speak. I hope the guy who released them is thrown off set.( not the serpent god the movie set)Steve remember this is pre cgi , and im sure that roman gladiator thing on his arm(I admit it is kinda cheesy)wont be there the whole movie. And the carraige we see , how is it gonna be used ? as a cool backdrop silhouette or something else? How will they utilize lighting in the forest? you just can’t tell by those pics dudes. You know I’ll say it again but i must emphasize while I’m not gonna panic, I’m not impressed either. I’m not blown away, maybe I wanted to be but hey I will say this. I’ll compromise and say maybe I can make a better judgment on the path this film is going if they did 2 things: Release the same damn publicity stills patrick louinet saw .I say this because we all deserve better than these pics delivered and I want to see what he sees and made him say at the least Momoa resembles conan.2. Release the movie this winter. why the long wait? casino royale a far larger budget and it was released in the second half of 2006 while it was filmed 6 months earlier. Why the wait?

  • Ian

    Hehe,thanks man :)

  • Ian

    Ive decided.
If i had my way.I’d ditch this idiotic idea they have.Get rid and give us King Conan with Dwayne Johnson with the role as an aged Conan. He may of been Scorpion King buti don’t mind.
Rip him to Fuck and put a square cut mane on and the blue eyes, scar him up and let loose in a primitive world of sacrifices harlets and riches.
I always imagine Conan with somewhat primitive features but built thick and heavily strong like that of raggedy battle hardened panther with graceful moves too.
Not all agree but for me Johnson would be great as a age old Conan.
Put descent budget behind it.Give it what it deserves and blow everyone away as the candle burns for a saga now finished.
Ive read they want to take 2011 into 3 movies and not just one with the final being where he takes the throne of Aquilonia.
But i’d prefer the above in all honesty instead of 3 movies of Momoa. :D

  • Finn

Yeah me too. The Rock would have to not talk like he normally does though, and not cock his eyebrows. He isn’t so old looking that he has to play an aged Conan. I made a mistake and watched his Tooth Fairy movie recently, he is a lot smaller now than he was as a wrestler, still a lot bigger than Momoa of course.

  • Steve Dilks

I watched “Pathfinder” for the first time in 2 years last night and was impressed by how unremarkable it was for something that looked so great. I hope Marcus Nispel does give us something as visually arresting and that the actors attack their roles with as much violent enthusiasm. Their was 52 days on that shoot as opposed to “Conan”‘s 70 days. Hopefully Conan will come across a lot more coherent. My main gripe about “Pathfinder” was that it was too confusing on the eye with lots of fast paced close ups. The way it was shot may have had something to do with it too although I thought that filtered effect did have some merit. Lets hope Nispel can improve on what he did with that movie on “Conan”. As for Dwayne Johnson as King Conan…well, I always imagined him more along the lines of Lin Carter’s Thongor of Lemuria. Still I can’t really see Jason Momoa as the brooding king of Aquilonia either. Conan the pirate, yes,Conan the desert cheiftan, yes. Even Conan the pathfinding scout as in “Beyond the black river”.

  • m

the people i would have liked to play conan, hmm most ofem are dead. iread somewhere once that frazetta did not care much for arnie, but if you stretched charles bronson to six foot six and worked him out he wouldve liked that. as far as my own picks, if i went the wrestler route i would go with a 30 something steve austin and chuck liddell would be another of that mold and ‘ll explain why. he has a very strange barbaric build he’s a crazy guy, and if you’ve ever sen him next to civilized folk he towers over them in not just height( he’s six foot two, acceptable for me anyway) but all around size, and still has a leanness about him. but neither of them can act, and they need a dark tan.steve austin, he has the attitude ,a harder build than i think people realize and those hard eyes. I can think of actors too,but most of them are dead or too old( realize this is with six months of hardcore training too.robert shaw( jaws) ,robert mitchum, anthony quinn.I think clint eastwood would’ve been cool for king conan if he was in his fifties. If anyone ever took a look at a real young, mr universe days sean connery add long black hair and maybe 10 lbs to his frame to me there’s frazettas conan right there. The guy was ripped!after seeing no country for old men, I could even accept josh brolin too. He’s got some size and a gruffness to him.Steve, I actually have more of an issue with nispel directing than Momoa starring . i feel the same way about pathfinder as you( its one of the strangest movies ive ever seen, how can a movie that looks so good be so dull? answer nispel) and the only movie of his that i’ve seen begininning to end that i like is friday the 1th and thats not saying much. the question is can he make Momoa look good and deliver a good conan flick ( at the same time?)

  • m

I just went to the cimmerian.com and saw the newer conan pics.(thanks for the heads up steve.these pics are head and shoulders above anything else I’ve seen so far( not great but enough to get an idea of the flick not a stage hands cell camera taking quick one! I hate to say this but I really like what I see actually!sorry if I’m disagreed with, but I am actually impressed now. not saying that the movie will be good but he looks good for conan to me! As far as the movie, release the damn thing this winter! no need to hold off….but youknow this studio did do this with rambo….

  • m

the hair still bugs me though, the waviness.

  • Steve Dilks

Lets see how much post-production work needs doing. I think autumn 2011 has got to be an “at the very latest” figure surely? This thing could be out in the theatres by christmas. But I guess its all down to studio execs and knowing your audiences. Lets hope Nispel can use “Pathfinder” as an early draft or rough version from which to work on this much in the same way Howard did with his own stuff (lets face it he even rewrote some of his own Conan stories!).I’m still dubious but, hey, this is Conan after all…

  • Fayric

Glad to hear someone else liked pathfinder (or parts of it;).Lets just hope the people with the money lets Nispel do his stuff.

What reasons could they have for holding the movie back more than a year? Are they waiting for some other fantasy flick they dont want to compete with, or perhaps use some other movies popularity (can only think of the hobbit now, but that might take a vhile).
With a promise of minimum CG they should not have to post-produce that long(I know their promises are not to be trusted, still..). Are the big movie companies in some sort of agreement as when to release what kind of movies? The last few months we have had a bunch of adventure movis suddenly released (like Clash of the titans, prince of persia, solomon kane, robin hood, alice in wonderland etc). Maybe the next fantasy season is not until autumn 2011 (or am I being a bit to conspiratory now;)

  • Steve Dilks

No Fayric I think thats exactly the reason they will hold back.Thats marketing forces, knowing when best to release your product in order to generate the most interest. Bands have albums laying around sometimes for up to a year before the hapless wits at the record company decide now is the time to release it. As you say a lot of fantasy movies have been flooding the theatres of late so in order not to get lost in the deluge I guess they might want to hold back. I mean if released now do we believe “Conan” could go up against , say, “Prince of Persia” and come up trumps? Talking of music I’m listening to Bathory’s “Hammerheart” album. Epic Viking metal. Mead for all by Ymir!

  • Ian

    Hey Steve,

Blood fire and death or beneath the grave are my faverites.
I don’t listen to that sort of music much anymore but from time to time
    i have a blast of it :)
But,blood fire and death was my all time fave :)

  • m

YOu know I remember the studio taking it’s time releaseing rambo.( which i had a blast watching, i think that and quantum of solace were the last flicks i caught in theatres!) I saw those very violent teasers in june 2007, and the movie was not released in ny until feb 2008. so at the very least if they follow that plan we may see a trailer this sept or october?

  • m

@Ian: you know it’s hard to keep an open mind because, most Howard jumps to film are simply not up to snuff ( no matter how much you enjoy the comedic value of conan the destroyer or say kull the conquerer, as I laugh at them and make fun of them, I still shake my head, saying Howard I hope is laughing too, if he were alive, he’d laugh all the way to the bank cause this aint him!)Conan is “the big one” so to speak, and in a world where you’re starting to see improved comic and fantasy translations( ie; lotr, batman begins iron man 1) as a group , no matter how our opinions differ personally, want to justice done to conan and howard as well, one way or another. i think thats why we get so touchy when news blips come up, we dont want to get shortchanged again. It doesn’t help eiher, that the movie is so far off and the next 2 big things I see coming on the horizon( besides any random news) is one the official promo pics of actors sets, etc, and the teaser trailers….and then what? waiting, cause aside the official trailer, these are the things i see our” council of koth” having discussions over. and it’s fun!Btw where’ serg? I’m sure if youre out there pal, you gotta love the pics:)!

  • Steve Dilks

Ian- Bathory are my all time favourite band. From “Under the sign of the black mark” through to “Destroyer of worlds”. You are right ,”Blood,Fire,Death” is a great album. I remember buying it the day it came out in the UK. I recomend it to Howard fans for the amazing opening track “A fine day to die”. The lyrics read like one of his finer poems (no lie!) and the music is as intense as it gets. Whats more amazing is that Bathory was the work of one man who went under the nom de nume of Quorthon. Unfortunately he passed away from heart failure in 2004. Though he kept an arms length distance in later years, he virtually single handedly started the Scandinavian black metal scene and the whole Viking metal scene popular today. He had a keen interest in sword and sorcery , classic mythology and is sorely missed.

  • greg
  • m

yup. these are the latest pics we’ve been discussing on the other threads and here now. what do you think of them?

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

The hair is way to curly. He looks like a spanish guy. Wavey all fine, but this fine grained curlyness completely rips out ANY resemblance to the “black-celt” origin he is supposed to be.

  • m

@serg: the hair really is a minor thing, it’s not that bad, but not what I expected.I was just hoping he wouldn’t look like sorbos kull, where the hair was so out of place it became a distraction to me. watch as kulls mop slays the demon witch of acheron!!!You know, as popular as sword and sorcery is stateside, I can’t think of too many bands that were popular here (popular not that they hail from here)that were influenced by it. I suppose iron maiden to a large extent really, and all the weird hobbit stuff influenced stuff from zep. I always liked “deaf forever” from motorheads orgasmatron and that song “out of the sun” off sacrifice, reminded me of the grim underbelly’s in some of Howards heroes, whether it was directly influenced by him or not.The black metal stuff you guys dig, though i knew a number of kids who were into it when I was a teen( even went to see some local bands withem when I was younger) isn’t as big here as it seems to be in europe and does not have as big an influence on what I perceive to be the fantasy crowd.( which is increasingly difficult to tell as I get older and watch more disney /pixar /dreamworks stuff with my kids rather than dawn of the dead (77 one of course)or monty pyhton and the holy grail. The little one likes jaws though…..

  • m

OH yeah i forgot…lemmy for conan’s grandfather!!!Steve I really got hung up on that one!!

  • Steve Dilks

M I think by and large most metal bands try desperately to stay away from any fantasy imagery these days. Don’t forget Stateside you have Manowar-who are like a serious Spinal Tap and are enough to put any self respecting folk off fantasy and heavy metal for life. Bands who I personally think have made the two genres blend are-Celtic Frost, Bathory and Keen of the Crow. I forgot to mention England’s very own Howard/Lovecraft influenced band Bal-Sagoth. They are an acquired taste but I couldn’t resist buying their gorgeously titled; “A black moon broods over Lemuria” album a few months back.
Anyway back to “Conan”. I think his hair is a bit vidal sassoon myself. My girlfriend thinks she looks ok as Conan and she’s no fan, which I find interesting.Hey M, when you read Fleming how do you imagine Bond? Having not read him I wondered if there was an actual definitive character description like Howard with Conan. It seems to me Bond fans must have a damn sight of a harder time than we do!

  • Ray

I am first and foremost a HUGE Tarzan fan and when I see the recent pics of Jason…I see someone who fits the character of Tarzan better than fitting Conan. All in all…I think Jason’s going to do well. I can’t wait for some of you guys to see some of the other characters in this movie. They’re quite impressive.

  • Steve Dilks

Ray, I too love Tarzan (the books) and I see what you mean but I have the same dilemmas with the ape man on screen. I really like Neal Adams interpretation of him on the Ballantine book covers of the ’80s and of course Frank Frazetta’s Ace books covers of the ’60s which incidentally landed him the job on Lancer’s Conan series.Everyone it seems has conflicting opinions on Momoa as our Cimmerian beserker. Will he be a Connery or a Lazenby? Time will tell but its been 26 years since the last movie and its about bloody time we had another go. At least hes not a wrestler or another damn bodybuilder(no offence Ray,our movie is still on!)and for that we should at least be thankful. At least he has acting ability and has played this type of thing before. Still I am thinking they could have chosen Dave Mustaine from Megadeth.Him and Momoa are uncanilly alike in build looks and temperament. Go figure.

  • Ray

    Steve,

    Totally agree! ;)

  • Fayric

Hm, the whole viking thing has been a bit iffy for me. when I grew up, the only ones who liked to talk about vikings were neo-nazis and skin-heads. Its not until recent years Ive got past that mental block and realised norse myth is a real treassure of stories and imagination.

Anyway, talking about scandinavian metal; I work with a guy who “sing” and write the music in the band Sanctrum. Check them out if you got some spare time. (not as mody as you might like, but they make it up with energy.
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2uQXtBnHkVI

Steve, I keep thinking of Fields of the nephilim when I listen to your stuff. Any chanse thats an influence, or is it just my poor insight in metal that makes me turn to the gothic side? (and, hope that was not an insult;)

  • Steve Dilks

Fayric-Truth to tell I’ve been “accused” of sounding goth before (check out the review of my “Songs for the dead…Chorus of the damned” linked on my page).I don’t know much if anything about where genres blur but I find it interesting.I know next to nothing about Fields of the Nephlim except they were an 80s Goth band.Do you insult me? No! Far from it-its always good to have listener feedback.Thanks. I know black metal has a bad rep in Scandinavia thanks to a few idiots in the 90s.The Viking metal thing I think is far more a celebration of Pagan ideals and mythology. Its not racist to celebrate your heritage.

  • Steve Dilks

Sanctrum.Fast, hair wind milling, heavy stuff!Stand to close to that singer in full rage mode and he’ll melt your face off with a fiery furnace vocal blast!Cool stuff, reminds me of Goatwhore. Thanks Fayric.

  • m

@steve : 007…how can answer this hout writing a whole page.lets see Ian fleming actually does have a commisioned drawing of bond, you can view it on wikipedia under james bond.He is actually described more thoroghly than conan, as per a dossier from the novel from russia with love: 183cm 76kg slim build. eyes:blue hair:black. Scar on right cheek and left shoulder(something ivenot seen in any movie yet)all around athelete expert pistol shot. boxer knifer thrower does not use disguises: languages french german smokes heavily. vices: drink but notto excess and women. this is from the dossier smersh had on him when they were setting him up. now as far as bond fans fave from the flicks.I cant say i know but most agree connery wasy the best. In my view of things,it’s like this: I’d love to see the conan flicks enjoy even a fraction of the success of the bond films but bear this in mind:The bond films are their own thing, very few of them are close to the source novels, and that could happen to conan. Imagine if 90% of the conan films that come out the next 20 years are in similar vein to conan the destroyer, (and that mainstram audiences love it!!nooooo!) and you basically have what james bond is in film comapared to the novels the past 40 something years.I think out of 22 flicks(this is all just my opinion, though I do feel right on it) there may be five that attempt to follow the lines of the novels plor ,lazenby is one of the better ones too.As far as bond himself, I do like sean connery, his first three or four are most consistent ( though they stray and you only live tiwce and diamonds are forever are waaay off base). roger moore, though his movies are fun is the “adam west” of the series and is waaay off. Had dalton and brosnan been given better material( I do like licence to kill and goldeneye for wht they were though) they couldv’ebeen better but brosna often couldnt decide whether he was connery or moore. i like dalton better. I think craig is good acting wise, resembles the fleming illustration a little too, despite the hair( always the hair with these guys). he’s subtle and there’s an undercurrent of bitterness that the character has that no one but him has portrayed. my only problem with him is he tends to get like a spoiled brat who doesnt get his way sometimes, bonds not like that.If anyone wonders how this relate to conan I can only say that any producer that makes movies based on heroic fictional characters would love the success of bond, and my use his flicks as a template for success ala indiana jones , batman.I like the bond flicks for what they are but forthe most part do not resemble fleming. it could happen to conan.and and these new batman flicks are better than anything bob kane couldve written but comic translations might play by different rules i dunno.

  • m

btw the bond flicks id do feel are closer to fleming are these: dr no( though flemig hated it it does follow the plot) from russia with love, goldfinger ( it does stray quite a bit more than people realize.) thunderball( i think was an original script novelized by fleming, her majesty’s secret service, and the middle part of casino royale ( don’t let anyone fool you it strays a lot though it is a great flick). thats it.

  • m

hey I got a game to play, what body part is momoa about to cleave in the pic? his head? his body? I’m guessing his arm , from the shoulder. the wrist? was also thinking about milius, one of my favorite scenes visually. when the reavers are about to crash thulsa dooms little”party” conan pull out his sword and grins at it , it sent a chill down my spine. it says to me, now the part i enjoy most the slaying.this is who I am .

  • Simon Musk

I don’t understand why we are discussing Conan and Bond when the section is about the death of Frank Frazetta but any way here is my opinion of the Momoa photos.I would have liked him to have bigger arms yes, however the side shot of him scowling is very Conan I think.
If he bring a certain gravitas to the role then I can forgive the lack of bulk.I really dont think we can honestly judge the look of the movie until we see some official publicity shots and not just bad leaked pictures!
By the way I used to run the Official Manowar UK and European Fan Club THE ARMY OF IMMORTALS from 1990 to 1997!!

  • Steve Dilks

HAH!HAH!Simon, you made my day. When I first got into metal I bought a couple of Manowar albums-”Into glory ride”(?) and “Kings of metal”. I even saw them on that tour at Hammersmith odeon. I cringed at every second. As a long greasy haired, acne and agnst ridden teenager it was the only time in my life I was embarassed to be both a fantasy and heavy metal fan- AT THE SAME TIME! I still really love their cover art though.Ken Kelley does a far superior job on them than he did on the Tor Conan paperbacks. As for the band themselves, Bathory (my favourite!) had a secret admiration and love of their stuff. I find references to their stuff scattered throughout their back catalogue. Listen to Bathory’s album “Blood on ice”. It’s the best album Manowar never made. Thanks for the Bond info M, the comparisons you made about those movies and the potential with Conan is a sound and valid one. HAIL!HAIL! HAIL AND KILL!!

  • m

@simon conversations go where they do. i was asked and amswered, i wrote how i felt they(bond flicks and potential conan ones) related. many of us paid tribute to the man(frazetta) at the beginning of this thread and are now carrying conversations from other threads, some of us ( ian and myself ) agreed to it.What else can we say? the man was brilliant his children are spoiled little pigs( alot of pettiness going on over his 100mil!) and he will be missed. As it is i agree with mostly all you say on momoa, except i have not much a prob with his arms. that as mikehatesthiswhole thing said earlier six foot five is imposing and will make up for any muscle issues, i agree with him on that point.

  • Steve Dilks

M- I think Momoa , with a scream of pantherish rage and a lightning sword stroke will cleave our battle fodder extra from left shoulder to right hip in a spraying, crunching welter of bones and blood.Original take- Momoa’s sword bounces off said warrior’s helmet and breaks in half with a sound of splintering wood. He is then hauled off set and treated for sprains to his twiggy wrists.HAIL AND KILL!(With apologies to Simon)

Indeed (and heres a thought) I just read a review of Solomon Kane in which one critic laments the fact that too many fight scenes were filmed in fast motion close up leaving you wondering if they couldn’t be bothered with cheorography. I found this a problem in Nispel’s “Pathfinder” and remember Ray the dead barbarian’s comment that fight scenes were made up in between takes by the stuntmen. A good action movie NEEDS well thought out directed battle/fight scenes. If you have them you can almost forgive everything else. I think there is too much quick and easy lazy film making these days. Milius’ Conan may not appeal to everyone but there is no denying the power of the orgy battle scene and the battle of the mounds. From what I’ve seen of Momoa in clips on youtube he DOES get stuck in so lets just hope Nispel is working closely with his stunt crew and designing some good frame by frame fight scenes. To be honest though most of these IMPORTANT elements should have been visualised during the early writing/storyboarding stage. What do you think Ray?

  • Ray

    Steve,

Just for clarification….NOT all of the fight scenes were made up on the spot. I’m pretty sure that many if not all of the ‘featured’ fight scenes with the lead actors were well thought out and most likely storey boarded. When I mentioned that alot of the fight scenes were made-up, I was primarily talking about mine and the background fight scenes. When you have a bunch of talented, experienced and athletic stuntman in the background…they can get away with making up fight scenes on the spot. What surprised me was how the ‘featured’ fight scenes weren’t rehearsed days in advanced like when they were filming the movie ’300′. Based on what I saw, the primary actors were told on the spot what they had to do and only had a matter of minutes to practice to get the choreography down. It isn’t that fight scenes are hard to do. You just need some athletic abilty, a little bit of acting skill and be able to remember the choreography.

  • Steve Dilks

Thanks Ray, I think some directors are better at filming fight scenes than others. I was really impressed the first time I saw “Braveheart” although I guess this will be more “comic book stylized”.Its intersesting to note the continuos change and approach to violence in movies: the sort of grim realistic edge which made the first Conan and “First blood” (both very similar movies come to think on it) has given way to a sort of over the top comic book madness thanks largely I suppose to the Waschowski brothers and too much CGI. Talking of which did someone mention they heard that there wasn’t going to be a lot of CGI on this? I hope not but it would be nice to have a ferocious ape beast or giant snake for Conan to deal with. Thats a sure fire winner for Howard and Frazetta fans.

  • m

Steve( and anyone for that matter) if you ever get a chance, I highly recommend reading the novel first blood by david morrell. It’s a well written suspense novel , Rambo isn’t exactly a sympathetic character instead of killing one cop and maiming dozens he kills a ton of cops. wont give away too much takes place in kentucky.its far more violent, it also explains that teasle the cop was a korean war vet and the”game” between them becomes a thing of pride and respect. The idea was to show the effect of war on people ptsd stuff like that. The ending is a shocker. ( hint : it doesnt play out anything like the alternate ending of first blood at all). And i thought nispel himself stated there were gonna be no gimmicks to the battles?

  • m

Question on the milius film: I always believed that at the end f the flick when conan kills thulsa doom, he was preparing to have his followers burn themselves alive because whatever he had set out to do( I believed seducing the kings daughter was part of a power play extortion thing, and look at the things he was capable of making his followers do…kill their parents jump from cliffs…it’s ultimatley what cult leaders want is power, and he was a warlord) he failed in , his bodygaurds and trusted aides thorgrim and rexor ( were they vanir?) dead he had to clean house in that neck of the woods and regroup knowing conan may come for him now that he had no muscle)I also think he wasn’t gonna kill conan( though I’m likely wrong cause its too similar to the beginning with his mother) But I theorize he might’ve tried to recruit him. Conan’s will was his own at that point and the strength of his mind overcame the strength of steel and flesh.Once dooms followers saw their man god was flesh and bone, their minds became their own and said ” better go home and start dealing some black lotus, we’re broke!”that was always what I thought the end was about, but my question is, does anyone else think thulsa doom was presiding over a mass suicide sacrifice. I also believe he was of a race that was cannibalistic ( as the orgy scene implies) and would’ve eaten good bbq for a while. any thoughts, disagreements opinions on that?

  • m

Btw my brother just gave me a rang and told me ronnie james dio has joined frank frazetta in the halls of the dead-can anyone confirm this?I met the guy about fourteen years ago in 96(think i was 18 or 19 at the time)at a local record store, and actually saw him in nyc that night play a gig with motorhead.

  • Steve Dilks

Dio has been suffering from cancer, M, I know some people who will lament his passing ,if its true. As for Morrel’s “First blood” I read it in school- too many years ago to think about. You’re right about the ending.Stallone saw potential in the character and made what I thought was a pretty good film. I devoured the novelizaton of the second film too, which was also written by Morrel and given over to less soul searching and more blood and mayhem. Watching that movie now is torture but , like you , I really enjoyed “Rambo”. I think Stallone upped the ante on that movie knowing what the fans want and deliverd without the cartooniness of his last two efforts. Rambo is a modern day Conan, a character I’m damn sure Howard would have identified with. A battle harderned man born out of time with a healthy disregard for civilization and its hypocrisies. As for Thulsa Doom and his followers- well, he was a pre-human serpent man ensnaring followers and bending them too his will. Milius certainly based the cult on real life ones and done it chillingly well. Doom’s end speech too his followers,as passionate as it is, is a little vague. Was he planning world conquest or mass suicide? The latter seems more in keeping with actual realism. Conan’s beheading of Doom seems to break the spell. In the book of the film Doom turns into a serpent headed man just before Conan kills him. By showing them the head of a dead serpent man would have made more sense to show that the followers had been hypnotised en-masse by something evil and non-human. The cannibalistic scenes were left over from Oliver Stone’s original script and utilized by Milius to show the decadence of the cult and to show how base and numb his followers had become. They were in fact eating each other,I guess followers who failed to please.

  • serg

I have to confess! I’ve never watch Pathfinder! :( Im goona do it in several to have better knowledge of Nispel’s abilities

  • m

First Blood was an awesome flick.I like the second and third ones to a point but they’re far too silly.the fourth flick is a big improvement and close to the first.and rambo does have characteristics that are in league with some of howards characters. As for the conan the barbarian,I never read the novelization scene( my buddy told me about it)but I always figured thulsa doom was gonna have them kill themselves because of what he was saying” this flame will burn away the darkness burn you away to paradise”Made me theorize about the rest of the stuff. He built up a small devoted willing to kill and die army, uding the cult of set as a front(cheaper than the mercenaries in the beginning of the flick he had)captured what i presume to be a powerful kings daughter(and his daughter was all osric cared about) .It just stinks of some demented ulterior motive cult leaders often have.and thulsa doom ,as old as he is rcognizes subversion is more effective than all out warfare.Crumble a society from within its own culture, gee I know I’ll use that old god set early man used to call my people.I’lluse the standard of my people as a symbol of religion amongst the young fools instead of waging all out war.sounds familiar right?Alas,Just a theory I’ve toyed with. And the theory about recruiting conan and the end is more for fun, ifigured conan killed his enforcers, this guy must be good so I’ll influence him( because his revenge motives are so primitive and barbaric,I’ll bend his emotionally driven will easily ,watch…uh oh)well didnt quite work out that way!

  • m

But thanks for entertaining my thought steve.

  • m

I figured doom knew he was screwed for now so lets clean house and start over.I’m 1000 years old and going strong,I’ve got nothing but time.As you said he was from a non human race,I’m sure he was the last if not one of the last of his breed and wanted to place a stake in human affairs(again very kull in theory)in this new thing these primitives have called civilization and be it’s ruler just as he(or his people) was in more ancient times.I think his breed could’ve been man eating in nature and having his followers eat their own species debases them and bends them to his will even more( just seals te deal so to speak, theyre his, throw some sex in there…)after being seduced initially with all the ideals, rebellion and nonsense cults use to “bring em in”.but I could see you’re point on lesser devotees being the courses, or political and religious targets.but this is what I like about Milius’s flick, i see something different every time and it’s so visual it leaves the viewer open to imagine whats going on under the surface.

  • Steve Dilks

Yeah you nailed it M, the whole cultist thing in Conan is fascinating because it eschews, twists and holds up a mirror to how debased and degenerate civilization can be. I think if some of these wacko cults had been more prevailant in Howard’s time he may have spotted something there too,but kudos to Milius. James Earl Jones was great in that role but did you read on the conancompletist site that Big John originally wrote the part (and dialogue) with Sean Connery in mind?! Actually when I imagine some of Doom’s lines spoken by Connery it makes sense. I don’t want to sound like some boring sentimentalist but I think the new movie has got its work cut out in matching “barbarian”.It may look a little dated now, and even kitsch in places, but it still manages to put a lot of todays fantasy movies in the shade.

  • m

You know I believe Howard was pointing in that direction ,I think Milius just went a little further down the road and attempted to answer “what makes civilizations rise and fall?” and” when and where does decadence start in a society and with whom?”can a civilized person save it or does it take an outlander (who like has been discussed )” is a random outside force that will plow his way through?”"Is that a good thing?”Thats why I remember we’ve both agreed ( i think) that in spirit and tone, this flick is closer to Howard than might be seen on the surface.I did see that about Connery. He would have been a solid pick he has a powerful voice.Jones has this exotic thing that makes him almost alien like in presence that I don’t know if connery could’ve pulled off,but I’ll say this. try to find pics of connery in his bodybuiding days.Havn’t seen many but theyre out there. He has a dark brooding face and with a bit of weight to his ripped physique…. well you’ll get the idea.

  • Rabensblut

I think that Jason looks very good on the photos.
And of course I add myself to the ones who say:

Death to false metal & Hail the true kings of Metal !!!

  • Rabensblut

When it comes to great Conan pictures on the covers of Heavy Metal albums, then Off course do not forget to mention Manilla Road: Spiral Castle, Gates of fire and Skullview: Legends of Valor.

  • Steve Dilks

Rabensblut, Manilla Road used Michael Whelan’s Elric painting for Michael Moorcock’s novel “Stormbringer” if memory serves me correct. Not so sure about their brand of 70s heavy metal though.Since this is a Frank Frazetta blog I have to mention Molly Hatchet and their use of his amazing Dark kingdom painting.Too their is the band Wolfmother who used his Sea witch a couple of years back.M you know the more you speak about the whole civilization vs. barbarism thig in “Conan the barbarian” the more I think you have seen what a lot of the “purists” missed in their bemoaning of screwing around with his origins. Indeed as proven throughout history all great civilizations collapse from within becomeing at first complacent then decadent and finally lazy, allowing to be taken over by outside forces by employing cheap labour mercaneries for their armies, etc. I think we can all see the parallells of what is happening around us today. Empires have come and gone. Great Britain has faded into dust and is nothing now and all but in name just another state dictated to by Europe. As with Bran Mak Morn and his Picts we fade, we pass…I’m very much looking forward to hearing your views on Milius’ “King Conan:Crown of Iron” script. As Bathory said ,in their para- phrasing of Manowar,-HAIL THE HORDES!

  • Steve Dilks

Oh yeah nearly forgot! I have seen those early Mr.Scotland pics of Connery and, yeah, he could have eaten Momoa for breakfast before he even had a chance to pull on his Calvin Klein undies! I remember seeing him in “The Rock” (the movie) with that long grey hair at the start and thinking he would make a great King Conan if they ever made “Conan of the Isles” or something similar. Charles Bronson maybe as Genghis Khan- I think his features too Mongol for a western barbarian. I thought that Jason Scott Lee would have made a good Brule, the spear-slayer from the Kull stories.

  • serg

Now I understand everybodies worries about new movie.Just watch pathfinder in BD.well….its genuine crap, actually ruined! Fat vikings thats just wrong…but definately atmosphere suitable for Conan, dark shots, battles shold be faster…
Anyway nothing we can change-lets pray Nispel learnt his mistakes

  • Rabensblut

Hi Steve, Yes Manilla Road used also Elric, but I mentioned two albums of the new era (Spiral Castle 2002, Gates of Fire 2005). Especially the Gates of fire is made of 3 trilogies (means three time three songs) and the album starts with three songs that are telling the tale of Conan and Frost giant’s daughter. On the cover art look at the upper right triangle.

  • Rabensblut

About Frank Frazetta and his Conan paintings, I love them as well as Ken Kelly, Boris Vallejo and many others. Frank was the one who inspired a generation of fantasy painters and I drink a toast on his work and on him. May he forever rest in piece.

  • Rabensblut

By the way out of topic for all the metalheads on this blog – Ronnie James Dio passed away, so I drink a toast on him as well.

you know , i went through some of it a ( what I thought was it)long time ago( been trying to get on the site you had mentioned but i’m having trouble opening it.) I remember bits about a son( spelled kon) an Ice worm sequence, and Conan walking into a bar and there was a valeria looking chick in there…. but it was either a false script ( so many online ) or an early draft.Conan obviously was older a little chunky even? And I rmember the details being off ( this was a long time ago too maybe six yrs?) like his kingship wasnt aquilonia but some weird named province. I was very leery based on what I was reading at the time, i find some (not all) storytellers in film, when they get older they get more absract and out of touch with being pragmatic when bringing their ideas down from the ivory tower(ahem lucas cough cough!)Charles Bronson was frazettas alleged pic( can’t believe anything you read these days online!:)I actually can see him as brule too.( in his young days not his death wish ones)Connery at first according to Ian Fleming was an “overgrown bricklayer” or something to that effect.but he liked him so much after from russia with love, he actually wrote bond as half scot.I think if you take a young Mr universe connery ( or one who looks like him) add 40 lbs more , blue his eyes you can either have at least conan or cormac mac art.( i imagine kull with different features for some weird reason
) Connery, in his youth has a rough babaric look on his face if you can get past the 007 gloss that was put on him and hes either 6’2″ or 6’3″ which to me anyway is suitable for film, which can make a person look as tall or as short as they want.

  • m

You know to steve ( and everyone else ) Milius changed all the details to suit his story, I know it can be annoying to those expecting lets say Venarium ( and my argument is that story was never specifically told by howard nor was cimmeria ever seen, at least to my memory of his work. if you want any flick to be true to howard to the letter, do you really want to see that stuff, as cool as it may be?ideally for me I dont care to see any of conans youth i would love to see him full grown and there ,as he was originally imagined akin to the way ledgers joker was portrayed without definite orgins, give some mystery to the guy.but there are those who need things mapped out for them and thats fine too)but it does serve a point to his story and he makes it cohesive. I can sum it up and make it brief( I know guys I ramble too much but when I have a thought I have to run with it )by saying this: Conan the Barbarian to me in a way is the low fantasy/sword and sorcery version of 2001 in respect that if you look at it you can always see something new ( its so visual and a pics worth a thousand words)in it at any viewing you didnt notice before and it reveals itself as you get older. It was a cool bloody sex filled adventure with a grim hero when I was 15 now i see more( as ive stated in above posts)Its biggest flaw ( aside some acting issues and it is dated) is it isnt LITERALLY true to Howard, but in spirit and ideas I believe it is.

  • Steve Dilks

Stephen Lang on thecimmerian website everybody…

  • Steve Dilks

Since there is supposedly a minimum of CGI on this movie does Mr.Lang measn by comparing “Conan” to “Jason and the Argonauts” and “The seventh voyage of Sinbad” that it will be full of forgetable bland characters and unconvincing studio scenery. The mind boggles…

  • m

    harryhausen stop motion for set!!

  • m

I have to admit though, I did get a kick out of the movies as a boy.I liked all of that stop motion stuff.

hey um didn’t i just write that word for word about 2 or 3 posts ago bruce?wtf?

  • Steve Dilks

Crom!Maybe you have a split personality M.I think I agree with Bruce though- he seems more articulate than you.

  • Steve Dilks

Actually I think what Steve Lang meant when comparing “Conan” to those Scheer/Harryhausen flicks was the tired old retreaded plots rehashed, remade and marketed as something new…maybe. But yeah, lets have some damn stop motion!!! Before this decade is out my moneys on a revival of all those old fashioned filming techniques. The movie industry needs a revolution!

  • Steve Dilks

Lang says about “translating Howard’s purple prose to screen”. I just hope that doesn’t extend to trying to imitat some of the dialogue. It looks great in written form, almost like a wild poetry, but I can imagine sounding garbled ghastly gibberish in the wrong actors mouth. I think M

  • Steve Dilks

Got cut off in mid-sentence there!… I think Momoa will be capable of growling out some good lines though from what I’ve heard and seen of him.

  • m

Har!:)croms gold teeth steve, stranger things happen!I did think I made a good point there, maybe it should be reposted!@simonmusk, I looked back at some of the posts and I saw you commented way back when about charles bronson being frazettas pick also.So I know I’m not nuts that I did read it somewhere.Thank you and I’m sorry I didnt look back and credit you as well.I think lang is just trying to be smart in selling this movie. I think he means similar in the vastness of the adventures, as cheesy as they may have been. Mix that scope with an r rating and as he said , not taking howard tongue in cheek, it’s a good angle to sell it,if anything else.”purple prose to me is just a silly figure of speech. I imagined more of a plaid pattern for howards prose…

  • m

Fom when I first started reading this blog to writing on it to now, there are alot less things that bother me about it than from the start. this is what still bothers me 1) Marcus Nispel, he just bothers me and I can’t say I’ve enjoyed his work other than friday the 13th which is not something to be taken seriously. 2) the premise of the flick, and as you know i’ve stated in the past i’m tired of origin/revenge flicks andI was kinda hoping ,for this that conan would be fully formed and fleshed out as he appeared in REH’s head. I can get past it if it’s done well, Conan had revenge as a motive too many times to count so it can be done.

  • Simon Musk

Has anybody checked out the photos on William Smith’s web site of him when he was seriously into body building? He is the Cimmerian full stop! Shame Big Bill is 77 now as in his forties he was an ideal Conan, check his arms out in the Clint Eastwood film ANY WHICH WAY YOU CAN,he was 48 at the time and he looks brutal.
Still impressed by the side shot of Momoa has a good grim look to him.

  • Fayric

Stop motion still has it! just look at “call of cthulhu”. I think Avatar and Gollum CG dont come close to the real thing, In my eyes its still kind of flat, even if I can enjoy it as I can enjoy magic and laser blasters thoug I know they are not real. I can still find a great childish joy from Jim Hensons marvelous creature shop and Harryhausens animated puppets. Real masks and settings do the little exta that make movies like Nightmare before christmas a work of love and genius. A marvel I dont much feel with modern effects. Jep, sure hope Steve Lang was talking about stop motion;)

  • m

Yeah ,I really got a kick out of the stop motion in that flick. And at the very least Momoa is a camera friendly conan. He looks closer ,in a general sense to what conan is compared to arnie, and at the same time he has a weird uniqueness to his facial structure that arnold had (in a very different way)minus that juiced up jaw and the gap in the teeth.Wasnt that considered sexy for women in the middle ages (:ie the canterbury tales)?can you summon demons, wizard?

  • Fayric

Anyway, I was thinking about how to make a conan movie. The problen seems to be that Conan is actually a “tall tale” hero, with marvelous attributes fit to win the day in any story, making him quite impossible to portray by any mortal man (because he is an Ideal with many contradictory descritions. And Im not just talking about Conans physiqe, but his other talents as well.)
I think m has brought up the notion of understanding the descriptions of Conan as, not the way he really is, but the way people percieve him. I think this is an interresting perception, becasue the stories are often written out of either the perspective of one of Conans companions or from a neutral narrator.
Now, the only way to portray Conan is to make him more as an bi character, and tell the story out of other peoples tales. Of course this would not make Conan absent for much of the movie, but rather a puzzling character unlike any other person in the movie. A grunting laughing independant man of action that you dont get to know much closer than what he says or do. In my oppinion this Is the way howard wrote him, not as a great hero with a cronological origin story and psycological explanations. Just a man who defines himself by his actions, looked upon by an amazed companion who can not exactly pin point what to make of that outlandish barbarian.
I once thought that they could use different actors depending on what kind of character was “telling” the story, but I think that would be a bit to modern for a yarn that should be timeless and classical (in an od gritty way of high fantasy and low adventure).
    Just pondering.

  • m

I like the path you’re on with your pondering fayric. These pulp heroes and comic characters, we all know it’s modern mythology. can brad pitt pssibly be the “perfect achilles”? I sure as hell didn’t think so and in my mind christian bale in the dark knight was far too slim to portray to the comic illustrations of batman( batman begins ,he was closer) Batman is far closer to a conan or superman in that realm, the mental and physical epitome of a man. I think aside of expressing Howards view on modern man, civilizations rise and fall and timeless themes,One theme I mentioned that I think would work well based on your statment is to explore myth vs reality.challenging our perceptions of Conan( our own , the artist writer and even howard) How he looks is built how fast he is and strong ,how ideal he is can be summoned up by a little dialogue mel gibson as william wallace about his own reputation in braveheart: remember he was ten feet tall and could shoot fire out of his ass ? remember that scene, it’s my personal favorite in the movie.

More Barbarians for the big screen: Robert Rodriguez, who was once considered to direct the new Conan and/or Red Sonja movie, told Ain’t It Cool News that he has acquired the rights for Ralph Bakshi and the late Frank Frazetta’s 1983 animated feature Fire and Ice. The new live-action version of the film has been set up at Rodriguez’s Troublemaker Studios.

  • m

@simon musk; took a look at the william smith site, hell yeah he would’ve made a great conan . the picture of him as the indian guy in that one flick blew me away. solemn but confident and powerful, I recommend yall check out his site too.And if you read his bio he has the world experience to back it all up. incredible guy.

  • m

Has anyone gone on thecimmerian recently? I’m reading that robert rodriguez has bought the rights to Frazettas Fire and Ice and when you go to the ain’t it cool site, it kinda implies( not outright says) he may be working with bakshi on some sort of live action sin city/300 version of it, as the last question he is asked is, who will play teegra?

  • Steve Dilks

Just been reading it M.I wouldn’t hold your breath though he dragged his heels over doing Conan before admitting he couldn’t do it. Besides do we really need a “300″ style makeover of that movie? Its beauty lies in the style it was shot itself( not in the story at any rate). As with Frazatta’s depiction of Conan, just who the hell living or dead remotely resembles Teegra, by Crom!

  • Steve Dilks

I think Frazetta will be interesting a lot of film producers now. I can forsee a Death Dealer movie on the horizon in the not to distant future. But…hands off “Fire and Ice”,or is nothing sacred? My vote is STILL for a Robert Rodriguez directed “Queen of the black coast” with Salma Hayek as Belit.

  • m

yeah I wasn’t doing backflips over this, the article only implies he would do a flick and I really can’t imagine anyone translaing frazetta.Even rodriguez’s answer to the question ,he has no idea how to cast her either!! As much as I love the original fire and ice, even that doesnt scratch the surface, and frazetta was involved with it to boot. But who knows what artistic angle they may go with , Crom knows the technology is there, just gotta get the talent to execute. Was it aint it cool or comic book movie site the lonk sent you to? I forgot.Definitely look up william smith, simon is right and if you read about this guys life, he’s as close to a modern day conan as anyone could be!

  • m

by the way I meant link not lonk. what is a lonk anyway?

  • Steve Dilks

    M. According to the Scrolls of Skelos a lonk is an ancient gateway, or portal, between parallel realities enabling two bit actors from silly sci-fi shows to enter our dimension and …etc, etc. “Oil the sword and feed the horse”.

  • Steve Dilks

Has anyone seen Spartacus:Blood and sand? Just seen an advertisement for it and I must say for a tv show it looks damn impressive. A friend of mine was talking about it the other day saying it was my sort of thing because it reminded him of Conan the barbarian.

  • Magben

Steve: I have watched the first season of Spartacus:Blood and sand. I loved it and recommend it to all Conan fans. Myself from Sweden, was impressed with the violence, full frontal nudity and decadence shown in a tv series from the US. As I watched it I constantly thought how any Conan movie could match up to this. I love Spartacus fighting style at the end of the series.

  • m

my buddy from work mentioned spartacus as favorite show of all time and he hates whats on tv. i’m gonna have to check it out on demand.Warrior , what are the flowers for? for a gurrrl!

  • Steve Dilks

John Milius to film Genghis Khan with Mickey Rourke, anyone? Rourke sounds quite enthusiastic too. http://www.getthebigpicture.net/blog/2010/4/23/mickey-rourke-playing-genghis-khan-for-john-milius.html
    Sounds dull to be honest.

  • Steve Dilks

Crom laughs at your four winds!

  • m

does it always smell like this? how does the wind ever get in here?

  • Finn

Great idea to make a genghis khan movie. Mickey Rourke as genghis khan though, that is like momoa as conan. I guess genghis khan will speak english too. They just need to make a series of movies that focuses on the Joker, and mickey rourke can play that part every year.

I just downloaded spartacus, I will watch it after lost.

  • m

it’s definitely a weird call, but rourke is a weird guy, and he does kind of look a bit mongolish with all of that plastic surgery…hey steve you notice all these qoutes about wind got me thinking and maybe its nothing probably is. the wind is mantioned alot in the conan movie, in our above exchange, when mako mentions his home down in the wind and fire wont burn there stuff also in a scene ( not sure if it’s in the uk version but they put in on the dvd here, never saw it till about 4 years ago when I bought the special edition) where subotai and conan are preparing for the final battle and theyre talking about the winds and the smell of it before the storm… think it means anything relevant or am I looking too far into it?

I too have watch Spartacus blood and sand and think it is awesome. And the first thing that came to mind was why couldn’t they get one of them dude to play are Conan :P

“Have you ever felt such a wind,Subotai…” M. That scene should have made the original cut.Its actually one of the strongest acting scenes featuring Arnie. It also shows the strong bond between Conan and Subotai when he gives the Hyrkanian leave to go. Subotai’s grimly humourous reply nails Howard’s own somber philosophy perfectly. As for the wind motif, my UK dvd copy doesn’t have a “Break like the wind” featurette- which is probabley unfortunate. Actually that sounds like a Manowar concapt album title.
Got to admit “Spartacus:Blood and sand” intrigues me even if it is “300″ with the “Gladiator” storyline tacked on. If they did “Conan” similar to this…well, lets hope this doesn’t trample all over Nispel’s movie with bloodied sandalled feet.

Spartacus: B&S is a pretty good show, as long as you get over the first 7 or so episodes. The first episodes are pretty uneven and concentrate mostly on slo-mo violence, but the story picks up very well for the latter part of the first season and gets very interesting as well.

I just hope the main actor gets over his cancer treatments and we get a second season of that show… :/

Nespiss, shit Im stuck for words, what wank has this bloke produced??
If you aint gonna do it justice leave it the F*ck alone. Momoa ??? WTF???? He aint no Conan, this looks like Mel Brooks version. Frank Frazetta should have been asked to be on the casting couch before the poor bugger croaked. Conan aint no pretty boy. He had the women damp cause he was a sodden great bloke who had an aura about him (spell check) that dripped savagery and power. He was ripped scarred dirty firery explosive and volatile even slightly unhinged. 6 billion people on the planet and they choose Mammery gland momoa??? Tit!!!
