Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer Launchtrailer

Funcom’s MMORPG Age of Conan: Hyborian Adventures steps into the next cycle and on the 11th of May they will release the expansion Age of Conan: Rise of the Godslayer. Today they have released the epic launch trailer and I thought I had to share it with you, because not only am I employed by Funcom as the German Community Manager, but I am also a vivid fan of Conan and REH.

Don’t kill me for going Offtopic, but I just love the trailer, Conan’s voice in the beginning, that we used parts of the Phoenix on the Sword dialogue and the music. After all I am still a Conan fanboy ;)

No interest whatsoever in this. This is as bad as all the book pastiches, tv episodes and dodgy cartoons put together.Worse perhaps because this doesn’t even involve Conan directly at all! It swipes his logo, sets it in a synthesized “Hyborian age” that bears little or no resembelance to Howard’s at all.Mammoths? Warrior riding tigers? Sorry Wald, you have been quick to point out corporate machinations interfering with Howard’s vision on the movie. But this?Really…

    @Steve
With no insight into what you’ll meet in the game I think you are quick to judge the game. Of course it’s an MMO and there are things you have to include.. if you don’t you simply fail and your millions go to waste with a 100% guarantee.

But… our story writer Joel Bylos is in close contact to the purists of thecimmerian, he discussed every tiny bit of the expansion with them, with Moongoose to stay as true to Howard as possible.

Conan is of course involved. You meet him through the course of the game, he gives you tasks to complete, that he cannot be bothered with, as he is King of Aquilonia. He is directly involved in the storyline of the expansion.

Warrior riding tigers… is not that far fetched with Howard descriptions saying that the warriors of the east ride “strange beasts” and the like. Most of the things in the land of khitai is taken from hints Howard made about the land. Of course his descriptions are not dense, but that gave the writers a good bit more freedom to extend the Hyborian Age without colliding with Howards writing.

    Yo!
Sorry for another offtopic: unfortunately mongoose ends the conan-rpg-line. :-(

    Back to Age of Conan:
I am no computer-gamer at all (I don´t find the time) but I like the cinematic trailers like this one.

    Warriors riding tigers? Why not!?
There are lot of undescribed regions in hyboria. Not in the west of course, but far in the east is plenty of room to establish such ideas.
(And I think it is kind of expected of the wow-driven target-group ;-)

Another offtopic which comes to mind thinking about the geography of hyboria:
    what lies east of lemuria?
just water til you reach the pictish wilderness?
    :-)

Konig I charge thee with a mission of grave importance…East of Lemuria lies a giant hither to unknown Wal-mart selling PC games with outdated graphics.Go thou there ist and retrieve thy credibility before thy kingdom is ruined. And lo, did the mighty empire of Fun-Com reward mighty bonuses for all…

I just wish we’d get a decent single-player RPG based on Conan – something in the vein of Oblivion or Dradon Age: Origins. MMOs remove all the immersion from roleplaying and offer a very shallow experience for the gamer.

Correct me if I’m wrong Wald but I don’t think any of King Conan’s speech paraphrases the road of kings poem which serves as chapter headings for “The phoenix on the sword”.The reason I mention this is because I lifted lines from it for a song I wrote called “Blood of Kings” not so long ago. I believe part of the speech at the beginning may come from the tent scene at the start of Howard’s “Hour of the dragon”. Without a copy close at hand I can’t be certain but ,well…I’m a bigger fanboy than you, nah!nah!! Good luck with promotion for the game.

@Steve yeah you’re right. I confuzzled that. It’s not from the poem, it’s from Phoenix on the Sword itself.

“In the old free days all I wanted was a sharp sword and a straight path to my enemies. Now no paths are straight and my sword is useless.”

    Second chapter, 8th paragraph.

Steve, just for the record, do you accept Frazettas paintings, or are those just pastiches and dodgy cartoons as well? Really, Im just curious.
(and vhile your at it, explain how you can first rant about pastiches and the exploitation of Conan, and the next minute declare that you have yourself contributed to this by your music:D

Me, I didnt read conan as a boy, like many of you others. If there was anything translated into Swedish, it was hard to come by. Therefor I have precious little experience of anything outside of Howards originals, motion pictures and Dark Horse comics, having a hard time keeping up with that. But I suppose I can understand the frustration of the arguments “Howard didnt say it was NOT this way” and the ongoing rewriting of Howards vision.
I think this whole blogpost strikes at one of the great dilemmas of mankind; Purist Howard or Conan as an ongoing legend with a life of his own (after all, the years and mass of the “extended” Conan legend far outnumber the years and lines howard dedicated to it, and many people would argue that Frazettas paintings is a true part of howards vision even thoug add later).
    Oops, babbling again. sorry.

Frazettas paintings are awesome in their own right , whether you accept them as “pure ” or not.as Far as the game I’m not an online type of gamer( barely have time to play my ps3, though my little girls often like the ghostbusters one)I think it is a cool thing to be involved in.i did recently finally have tme one night ( after the family went to sleep) to finish my ps3 conan. i gotta say though its not the best game ive ever played, it’s extremly underrated and alot of fun to play. even perlman as conan’s voice and some parts of the story (whenever there is one) are entertaining and made me laugh out loud. I think… i suspect ( maybe you can confirm waldgeist being you play a role in the industry) they weren’t given much to work with budget wise, which is why i think it’s seen as a poor mans god of war ( don’t know never, played it, my brother used to love it though, and he liked the conan game.

Fayric-The first publiushed Conan pastiche was written by Bjorn Nyberg (from Sweden!) and published in 1957 as “The return of Conan”. I found it an entertaining read full of fast moving action and guts and gore. Some characters and scenes I found a little out of keeping with Howard but generally I liked it.I loved some of the comics too.In particular the late ’80s issues of “Conan the King” written by Don Kraar and illustrated by Mike Docherty.I also liked “Savage sword of Conan” from that era with the art of Gary Kwapitz,Dale Eagleshem and Ernie Chan.Their were some good stories in its pages by Kraar,Chuck Dixon and Gerry Conway. Some books I read ( Leonard Carpenter,Steve Perry, etc) I found ghastly. The fact is some companies, such as Tor books, are granted a liscence to a character then hire people to develop a product which means they have to do research.I swear from reading some of those Tor books pastiches that the writers research extended to a mere handful of Marvel Comics and a rerun of “Conan the destroyer” on t.v.In other words some pastiches are not only uninspired but souless too. Just because something has the name “Conan” attached too it does not mean you are getting the real deal here. Their are plenty of true Howard/Conan fans who have in the past done excellent jobs.I’m just wary of hard sell commercialism.

  12. Fayric
    At 5. May 2010 13:02 o'clock

Yea, I suppose this blog, and the people reading it, leving comments, is proof that no matter what, most Conan fans follow each new pastich with hope (and perhaps a little exitement)that it will be a good one. And like you said, even the most purist of conan fans praise Frazetta as a genius.
Im not sure I am now or was in the recent post trying to make a point. I think, what Im aiming at is, we all chose what we want to call “real Conan”, its highly personal no matter what clever arguments or quotations we have. But, yea, a big Boo for commercial eploitation of the legend, or any legend, if its not done with soul.

“I think this whole blogpost strikes at one of the great dilemmas of mankind; Purist Howard or Conan as an ongoing legend with a life of his own…”

The purist position, as posited in the Purist Manifesto by Rusty Burke, does not mean pastiches should be ignored or considered worthless: merely that Howard’s work should be considered on a different echelon. Sort of like with George Lucas’s Star Wars & expanded universe.

So there needn’t be a dilemma at all, unless you want to consider some creations as being “equal canon” with REH.

  16. Waldgeist
    At 5. May 2010 21:44 o'clock

Age of Conan is certainly not a cheap exploitation of the Conan stories. Funcom has made so many bows to REH and his creation, taken SO MANY financial risks in making the first 18+ MMO, pushing the graphical envelope when everyone else is going for Comic graphics and large range of Hardware support.

We have grown up stories, we did tons and tons of research on the historical elements of the Hyborian Age, our Art Director and our Lead Writer really love Conan from the core of their hearts and try to stay true as much as possible to the Hyborian Age.

Fayric you nailed it.As fans we all have the right to like whatever pastiche or tribute we please, we may agree on some and not on others and thats cool. some guys like robert jordan others dont. i like some of the nyberg/ decamp /carter stories myself. And i really enjoyed the marvel comic.( i love the dark horse one but havent read as many)But only howard wrote conan the way we all like it.So accepting the fact that Howard hasn’t been around for most of conans rise in popularity, pastiches is all we have, and there’s a lot more of them to judge than the original stories. probably why Howard fans will always argue over whats hardcore conan as to whats not.I dont want to make a comparison to lucas and star wars fanboys though. lucas to me was howard and became decamp in a 30 year span.A pastiche of himself.Lucas however is still alive and has licencing rights to all this expanded universe stuff ( for lack of another word I want to use but i dont want to offend any star wars fans out there)

  18. m
    At 5. May 2010 23:47 o'clock

didnt get to finish my thought cause i just had a million interruptions. Though i have nothing against all of star wars and fans, the impression they give me is thats it’s become a cult ( though sometimes they act like they know better than lucas, he’s the one laughing to the bank)and I’d hate to see that happen to conan fans, I find them much cooler , with strong valid opinions and knowledge not only of howard and weird tales writers of the time , but we’ve earned a bit of history , language cultures, it all relates in howards stories.

  19. m
    At 5. May 2010 23:54 o'clock

I think we’re also concerned with if the popularity of conan , as it expands ( exponentially with this movie) how he will be projected out there and percieved by those who have not been exposed but may become fans. My fear is that they become like what star wars has become, , overscrutinizing all of the wrong things . My thoughts are not completely collected on this one, when i think it through further its an interesting issue, not just with conan either any heroic fictional character that is translated to film.

It was Age of Conan that has taken me deeper into the Conan lore after all. It was refreshing encountering people and places during the exploration of Conan´s world in the books and comics that I came across in the game.

Steve seems to be a real hardcore fan and I can respect that. However, quickly shrugging off something, or worse, throwing wrong facts around something one does not “want to like”, is a bit laughable.

    @ Taranaich.
    Sounds like a reasonable position.
However, Ive read som harangues in the past that strongly imply that not everyone is aware of mr Burkes definition, or care to embarace it.
But angry comments and posts aside, I agree that the manifestos definition is probably the way purists actually approach Conan, because they usually seem to have extaordinay knowlege of the pastich works:)

  23. Fayric
    At 8. May 2010 20:19 o'clock

true, m. The strenght of a good story is often in how much we, the readers, are alowed to imagine for our self. The best of stories are written so that we can fill out the blank spots with our own sense of awe (not trying to belittle the writer or the story it self thoug;). So I guess the extended legend is really what we make it, and not good, bad, true or pure outside our personal experience. Even the original Howard stuff can be experienced in highly different ways by different people: funny, silly, grim, cauvinist, realistic, fantastic, timeless, outdated, etc etc.

  24. Fayric
    At 8. May 2010 20:30 o'clock

    cont.
This is probably why people are so offended by comics, movies and computer games; they violate that pesonal image we have made up of our own imaginations so long ago.
After all, Howard learned suggestive technics from the master, HP Lovecraft.

  25. m
    At 8. May 2010 21:12 o'clock

@fayric and all:Howard had a knack, to me to make even the most insignificant character in his story have a depth that I cant quite articulate or put my finger on, for example even a court jester in a story who may appear in just a paragraph , just seems to be so fleshed out he almost tricks you into seeing them and their motives. Take rinaldo the poet in the phoenix on the sword: when conan hesitates to kill him, you can almost smell the degenerate sissiness in rinaldo that conan does,it’s like” I don’t wanna kill this wuss, its a waste” .of course he does once injured, but you really get the sense that rinaldo is a guy should not be even thinking about participating in this assassination and is maybe a bit deluded by his own sense of granduer, just because he is like a sort of”peoples poet”(young ones steve?). And he really is not in the story that much if you go back and count the times he speaks or is spoken of, Howards that damn good!! I think though, a good writer,, in trying to do say conan( and I may be walking into contradiction here but i’ll risk it ) should try to not so much imitiate howards style of prose( because from what i’ve experienced even the good ones don’t come close, though I do enjoy them they tend to me to focus on conan’s herculean aspects and stick to simpler plot construction, the situations that Howard puts his heroes in is what really appeals to me the most. Btw the contradiction is, isn’t that what partly classifies a pastiche? writing in the authors style?) But offer a good plot construct in the writers own literary style with Howards hyborian age its history, peoples, spirit, serving as a template of sorts. I’m not saying characterization is not important I just think that it cannot be done as well as Howard did it.We know the character , be true to him but put him in a real fix to get out of .Thats why the only thing thats irking me about the movie still s this revenge bit . it’s a common theme in conan but this reeks of a shortcut to me, I hope there’s more to it and if its the main bit , they do it at least in a cool presentable way.Got some last minute stuff to do before mothers day.If the half swede/ half austrian ( american born) wife is not pleased she’s gonna give me more trouble than the frost giants daughter could ever stir up!

  26. m
    At 8. May 2010 21:20 o'clock

Just a note I would recommend without hesitation Howard to people who have no interest in fantasy sword and sorcery science fiction and cosmic horror. He’s just that good a storyteller! His stories not only laid the foundation for some of those genre he manages to transcend the very genres he’s credited for founding!!

  27. Fayric
    At 9. May 2010 13:56 o'clock

m, I think your contradiction makes alot of sense ;)
Talking mostly out of non Conan pastish works here, I think its not that the pastich writers dont know their Conan, but that the story suffers from the thought that it must contain the big and easily found wording of Howard such as Conans physice, namedropping cities, etc, to make reader feel at home. Its kind of backwards: instead of writing a good story and making good use of the character Conan, they take Conan as a concept and try to build a story out of that. I read somewhere that Conan is like an unpredictable active force that Howard throw in to a rather unproblematic or passive plot to get the story going. So, conan should be used as reacting on a storyline, not the story being built around him, in my humble oppinion. Pastich can be done really good, but it risk being forced and shallow unless the writers know exactly what they are doing. And of course this is also true in writing about the starwars galaxy, moorecoks multiverse, the empire of Mongo etc.

And I would also recomend Conan for non fantasy readers. But then again, I have always thought that Fantasy, horror and sci-fi on a whole describe our world more accuratly that any realist work of social reflections. Was it Lewis Carroll that said “fairy tales dont tell us dragons exist, they tell us dragons can be defeated”, or something like that?

For a Conan “game,” this looks like utter crap. Tiger Riders? Does this take place on Eternia?
This might be cool for a He-Man game, but not for Conan.

  29. m
    At 10. May 2010 15:49 o'clock

@Fayric: I think I read the same thing about conan being a force that plows his way through.Thats pretty much how I feel about alot of the pastiches too, even the ones I enjoy.I would reccommend not just conan, any of Robert E Howards writings to anyone because there’s something there for everyone: philosophy adventure horror etc. Some of my favorite books in the world aren’t even of these genres (for example three of my faves are: on the road jack kerouac, one flew over the cuckoos nest ken kesey, gone with the freakin wind margaret mitchell!). @Waldgeist : It’s interesting to see the kind of responses you have been getting pertaining to the Conan mmo. I personally have no interest but I won’t knock the game , I am kind of a solo player ,and my role playing game experience only amounts to the first phantasy star on the sega master system when I was 8 or 9 and ff7.)so I can’t judge what I won’t play. But It’s interesting to me because it puts you in a similar position of those trying to sell the movie to those like us (although there seems to be a little bit of a warming up to it, even by me , I’m likely to go and see this in theatres rather than wait, I don’t go to the movies much anymore) who have given it a very cold reception.

  30. Waldgeist
    At 10. May 2010 16:42 o'clock

    @m

No the game is in a completely different level than the movie. The ignorant pseudo-purist idiots, that yap their mouths at the game, because it has people riding on tiger-beasts (yeah they are not ye-average tiger) have no clue about Howard and obviously haven’t fact checked nearly a fraction as much as the Lead Designer on the expansion.

For about everything in the expansion there is a Howard quote and if there is not, it fits with the tone of the world and if it doesn’t fit directly it’s grounded in REAL asian history (clothes, weapons, buildings, nature etc..)

  31. m
    At 10. May 2010 18:50 o'clock

Waldgeist: Dont misunderstand me . I’m definitely not saying the guys who made the game did not do their homework,( as I think is being implied about the movie?) I know they did.I’m just making a comparison of two groups of creative folks being on the defensive end of things. The movie, for obvious reasons has a very uphill battle. And presenting your own touch on the saga with the mmo, you seemed to have met some resistance here as well. Howard fans as I have said are a diverse bunch. It’s like discussing the bible or history with Howard everyone has a different viewpoint on how it all goes down, and it gets hairy sometimes. I took a look at the game and I personally have no complaints as far as lure, as i have argued in the past it’s a matter of personal interpretation. Plus look at me I’m the one dope on earth who seems to enjoy the ps3 conan lure wise and all.I certainly would never claim to be a sme(subject matter expert), but I have my point of view. I thought that bit at the end where graven expected conan to understand his point of view on the demise of civilization was a really cool twist.Just like I said before enjoy what you do ,whether it be mmos rpg’s comics milius, decamp, roy thomas, the lochness monster and esp. and waldgeist , take pride in the fact that you in a small way actually contributed to the character in a positive way ( which speaks volumes)

garzo, did you know The Masters of the Universe was originaly meant to be a Conan tv show? Besides, to say that something resembles He-Man is indicating its something very good and precious, and not really critisism at all! (ok, I grew up with He-Man, not Conan; loved it, still do)

@Waldgeist. For what its worth, I think this kind of game is perfect for the world in the hyborian age. What better way to let the fans explore it and develope their understanding of it?
Sadly I have failed to find interrest in computer games for the past few years and I dont think this will be an exeption.

@m I figured you would like Kerouac, althoug I prefer his Dharma Bums. Another long time favurite is Steinbecks Tortilla flats, it really knocked me out when I was younger, and it contains that rare sense of being inhabited by real people, even if you just passed them by. I have little respect for litterary genre; I can enjoy TS Elliot, Du Fu, and Robert E Howard, no problem; Its just good reading for me. Funny thing is, I read TS Elliot and Goethe as a teen, now I mostly read fantasy and marvel at the masterly storytelling (like the great characters in howard, or the wisdom of Le Guinn). Its sad to se so many people dismiss fantasy, horror etc as second grade litterature. some years ago a litterature professor of mine really disliked Lovecraft without any actual experience of his writing. And even when he was supposed to mentor my essay on HP he refused to read any of the stories I gave him as background. Well, his loss I suppose.

Alot of academic sorts dismiss the pulps or the pulp era,I would love to ask a guy like louinet about what can be done to get guys like howard and lovecraft in more colleges or even high schools for that matter. I read the hobbit in 8th or 9th grade why cant the mountains of madness or hour of the dragon be required.Of mice and men is also in my top ten steinbeck is great.as much of a fan of kerouac that i was I am not much of a fan of his contemperaries, ginsburg and burroughs( not the guy who wrote tarzan the beat writer). dont like them.I do have affection for bukowski though. too much out there to begin to list.

Charles Bukowski,”Ham on rye”, is a personal favourite. Hey M, I always had an idea to call a band ‘Kadath’ or ‘Sarnath’ as a nod to Lovecraft. I eventually settled on ‘Angel Omega’ for what I do now but I still love those names.

Ignorant Pseudo purist idiots, Waldgeist? I think if you are going to publicize this sort of thing on a movie blog you really should brace yourself for some criticism. There is no quote that says Khitian warriors ride tigers in Howard’s essay of the Hyborian age, nor do they appear in any of the stories. That is obviously the work of somoene elses imagination. I appreciate your involvement in something like this but I also remember that it is your job and you get paid to do this. We are fans and don’t. We are the people you want to sell this to.

I don’t get paid to make this blog, I don’t get paid to post these videos here. I thought the video is genuinely cool and it’s Conan talking in it, that’s why I wanted to share it. Just like Frazetta’s death, this is connected with REH and in the About section of this blog you’ll find this is what this blog is also about.

Crap, I have tried to avoid Bukowski. But in one of my favourite book shops they love him, my brother loves him, and now you guys. Lokks like I will have to borrow some from my brother.

About getting pulp era to the academic world. I think Lovecraft is slowly beeing accepted (actually due to students requests and smaller essays). Howard probably has a loong way yet. But I think contemporary litterature is getting harder and harder to pin in a specific genre. To many crossovers and borrowing from other styles (guess Howard was pioneer in this as well). Writers like Neil Gaiman, Murakami and that exelent spanish writer Zafon writes highly indiviualistic stuff that borders horror, fantasy, magic realism and historical novel. And with this trend in contemporary litterature, I think the academics will have to start looking at the books/writers that inspired them (Poe is not nearly enough!). I myself has found some wery interresting stories by looking at what Lovecraft praised; Lord Dunsany and Arthur Machen to mention the obvious;)

fayric I’ll say this on bukowski: don’t take him too seriously, have fun with it. I read hard boiled wonderland and the end of the world,I really enjoyed it , strange fun read. And guys lets not make reading howard like bible study or something. anyone who writes or creates something from another persons creation will take liberties whether it matches its root or not. if there’s room for winged ape demons, elephant alien gods, serpent men,and lovecraftian nondescript creature types theres room for tamable tigers for warriors to hitch a ride..

Yeah there’s no REH stories about tiger mounts but if some patrice louinet discovered some REH fragment that had them, I wouldn’t say FUCK THIS MAN, HOWARD NEVER WROTE ABOUT PEOPLE RIDING TIGERS BEFORE, THIS SHIT IS COMPLETELY OUT OF CHARACTER FOR THE UNIVERSE, FUCKING FAKE, FUCK YOU PATRICE. If it was green martians in space ships with laser guns, then I would say that. Tigers doesn’t seem too bad, if you can believe they can be tamed like a horse.

I would try out that game if I hadn’t read an interview with one of the people associated with it before it came out that sounded like they were gonna gay it up pretty bad (like the interview with the Conan movie director a few months ago), and if I played MMO games.

Still early days yet but yeah, things look better on the fast action moving pose front. I’m hoping for some good set design pics. As for Momoa things can’t possibly look worse than those blurred leaked photos from before. Looks like my early fears of them using the Milius swords was unfounded too. Lets hope Nispel can put his own stamp on this without pandering too much to marketing forces.

@waldgeist: you know I was thinking abit about conan and video games and I think a good forum for conan himself wouldnt so much be a rpg ora god of war clone, how about a sandbox gta type game? go anywhere environment tons of missions and plots and subplots different weapons.. I was reading about this western style game called red dead redemption, saw the graphics and said damn this would be right up conans alley, and I think its more doable today than it was 5 years ago. what do you think?

@m Red Dead Redemption sounds like a great basis for a Conan game i agree, though there is one part that would make this unfitting for a Conan game. Conan, REH are about STORY, not about farming, spending normal day live. Conan is Pulp. Pulp is specifically about stories that are the SPIKES of someones live. Not the everday routine, not the usual bitches he gets into bed or the small town robberies.

While I would love to play a Red Dead Redemption taking place in Hyboria, I think it kind of contradicts all that is Conan and REH.

I see , I was more thinking about the missions themselves and what you make of them( each mission would be a spike so to speak in fact if you even had 60 missions, say they could even do adaptations of howards stories incorporated into it.For example can you imagine a mission where you break into the tower of the elephant , and actually play out those events!)I’m sure the formula could be tweaked to encourage going on the adventures rather than starting bar fights in zamora, which could be funny too.( again I’m no programmer I am the dope who likes the ps3 game so I’m thinking of what I’d like to play of course)the everyday stuff would be optional more for the gamer than the fan.I dont know if its so much a contradiction rather than a just a broad interpretation. If thats the case than a god of war type game is the only way to convert conan because its sticks to just the adventure part, not the small robbery, or horse feeding of a sandbox game, nor the experience point gathering and item questing of an rpg or similar.I think there’s room today for everything and a fan of conan and the game genres canhave both.

i think if you can relate to the sense of the world being presented in any genre for the hyborian time, and connect it to how you perceive howards world than immerse yourself and it shouldn’t contradict anything really. whoa my 2 year old pooped be back lata.

Hmmmm, to be honest I think the trailer is not that great at all. At least graphic-wise…
