Shooting locations for Conan Movie in Bulgaria revealed!

Thanks to the comment made by “Stampfer”, we were directed to an article on filmneweurope, that reveals some of the shooting locations that the new Conan movie is supposedly shot at. The locales range from a river consisting of very large boulders, over mountain locations in the north of Bulgaria to the Mediterranean looking coastline of the Black Sea. Certainly Bulgaria has a lot to offer when it comes to spectacular and versatile backdrops for a movie, taking place in pre-ancient times.

Since we know that Conan travels a great distance in the movie, it’s good to see that they will use actual locations and not try to make too much in the studio. I like it when movies are shot on location, because it delivers a certain realism, that even the most advanced foam rocks, artificial forests and the like cannot transport. Let’s see how they mould, light and cut those already nice looking locations into an illusion of an Hyborian Age, that is worthwhile exploring.

Whilst I respect your love of Conan Serg and are obviously excited by the fact that this project is being filmed so close to home I am admitedly cynical. You are right in one thing you said,I DO love the original movie for all its faults.Though my post may have fanned the flames of Crom’s wrath in you I can make no apology for my obvious attempts at humour.Notice I said “when I was a kid…” This wasn’t a macho manly challenge for Jason Momoa to come over and really kill my ass!
Is the filming on the Med to do with some part of the script that deals with Conan’s role as a pirate?I seem to recall some part that deals with that which could be a highlight since that part of his life has not been touched upon in any previous production. Too, Momoa does want to star in the next Pirates of the Carribean movie…

Considering filming location in Mediterranean coastline of the Black Sea, maybe they already set the stage for adaptation of REH’s “Queen of the Black Coast” in the next movie ;-) ?
    Black Sea = Black Coast :-) !
It is not out of mind, if we take into account the success of Pirates of the Carribean movies…

Yeah and Conan will not fall in love with Belit, but instead he will have a funny sidekick: A somewhat gay captain by the name of Captain Jaques pierrot ;)

  5. mikoza
    At 20. April 2010 11:19 o'clock

That is not out of mind, either…imagine:
    Momoa = Homoa
    in
    Depp = Deep
No, no, that plot should be the “Pool of the Black One” (pirate against his captain) :-) ! And that would be blockbuster :-) !

    At 20. April 2010 11:21 o'clock

The black sea could also portray the Vilayet sea, but its still on the pirate theme (just check out his flambouyant style in “the devil in iron”:D. Still, we would loose the Black sea/coast pun;)
How long will this movie be? will they have time to do alot of “back ground” or will it just be a collage of “Conan wandering the world”?
Somehow Howard managed to write his stories with a great sense of epic cities as well as breathtaking, wild, nature. I hope these locations mean they aim to give us a taste of the wast and epic world of Conan,as well as the low and cruel people who inhabit it.

I heard a rumour (Empire magazine, May issue) that Thomas Donneley was already writing a sequel.Conan and the pirates might be a bankable option from a producers point of view.I still think Salma Hayek would make a great Belit under Robert Rodriguez direction. An adaption of Pool of the black one would be a grand mixture of swashbuckling adventure and outre horror, at odds with all the Johnny Depp cash-ins.Come to think of it, Queen of the black coast would be even better.

    At 20. April 2010 11:42 o'clock

Jokes aside, I totally agree with you, Steve. Why not make a mixture of “PotBO” and “QotBC” wit Johny Depp in role of captain. That would be fantastic! Instant hit! Classic! And, I also agree with your proposal: Salma Hayek will be great as Belit.
But, I am afraid we all can just dream of something like this :-(

I probably gonna say odd thing…but I dont really want the original stories to be portrayed on the screen(Hour of the dragon-exception)
try to understand – when Im reading them all over again they are just perfect-in my head they are the masterpieces…
…Im sure you all know what kind of cult Conan became for various authors(so vast amount of stories still counting) cause REH left so many conan adventures untold-large field of imagination…(unfortunately very few can resemble that Howard’s spirit of Hyboria which drives me crazy since I was a kid-and it already differs )…
… so for me its exciting to see NEW adventures on the screen, something that can blow our minds again…like it was the first time we came across Conan book.
Thats why Im dying to see the Movie-this just another adventure of Conan :)

wasn’t it written in the Artus character descroption that he meets Conan after a fierce sea battle? So there will be the ship fight:)
Thats great news!!! We need water in the movie HAHAHA
Somebody have a clue about the length of flick?
(i hope its gonna be atleast 110 min-otherwise its gonna look like stupid second mummy)

  11. mikoza
    At 20. April 2010 14:05 o'clock

Serg, don’t get me wrong, but what you mean under “NEW” adventures. Did you like latter issues of Conan the Barbarian (after leaving of Roy Thomas) or Savage Sword of Conan (above #100) comics? Did you like Sprague de Camp/Lin Carter pastiches? Did you like TV series with Ralf Mueller? Did you like games and cartoons of Conan (except the Age of Conan – sorry Wald :-) )? All of that may be considered as “NEW” stories and adventures. If your answer is YES, then I apologize to you, but I think that wast majority of people didn’t like this stuff at all. My personal opinion is that can’t be anything new considering Conan – everything is already said and done. You can try to put on pile some scenes and some events that you “think” is original, and then hope someone will say: Hey, this is great! Really “NEW” and “ORIGINAL” story! I like it! But, soon as that person cool his head (read – day after he see the movie in theater), he (or she) would say: Oh, he take that from “there”, or: But, this is cliche, I see this in bunch of other movies!
Again, maybe there can be something really new. For example, Conan vs. Predator story…but, wait! This is not “NEW”! Already done in Predator movie – just imagine Arnold on the end of the movie as Conan, and “voila”. If you understand what I wanted to say?
    So, my point is:
Either you can adapt “ORIGINAL” story (or stories) in movie(s), or do nothing.

    Again, just my opinion.

    Ah what the hell…

    At 20. April 2010 18:07 o'clock

Serg you are right in trying to keep and open mind on the thought of new adventure. trying to take something from a story already out and has been around even more short stories like R.E.H.’s there is not really anyway to turn those into screenplay and maintain the all of what the writer had put into it especially someone as brilliant as Howards. It just paves the way for disappointment so a new idea might be a good idea if they keep R.E.H.’s influence.
And no one should be down talking anybody for what they like or believe if you cant say something positive about other people or there comments dont say anything at all. Grow up already

I have high hopes for the movie and if Momoa has put on 50lbs for the role he should make an impressive Conan! Lets face it cant be worse than Conan The Destroyer was!! At the time I thought it was an ok movie mostlty because I WANTED it to be.Watching it now is painful to say the least.Conan’s sidekick was truly terrible and the humour wasn’t funny at all.I think Ron Perlman being involved is a good sign so lets just wait and see eh? Hopefully we should see some photos from the set pretty soon.

  16. Steve Dilks
    At 20. April 2010 18:47 o'clock

I dont think it possible to gain 50lbs of muscle in 6 weeks. Not even Charles Atlas went that far when trying to sell his winning formulas!Momoa is tall and lean so I guess the best interpretation we can to see is that of Barry Windsor-Smith’s from the excellent 70s Marvel Comics run.Maybe if that kind of look is what they are aiming for it would certainly have some validity.Smith’s artwork had some truly gorgeous stuff going on with costume, scenery and so on.It would be great to see some of the fabulous cities envisioned by Howard even if they are seen from a long perspective in CGI.

  17. Fayric
    At 20. April 2010 18:53 o'clock

Serge, I think you are right in many ways about not doing the original Howard stories. First of all, I have not yet seen any movie adaptation of any book that lived up to the reading experience. Movie adaptations can be really good movies, but never good re-tellings of the original story. Second, there really is alot of material from Conans life that Howard never wrote about, so technically, one could make some great Conan stories without messing up the original storylines and characters. Technically that is. Experience of such attempts has turned many fans into bitter purists, by all right.
The script writers must really be trapped between a rock and a hard place: either they try to make an “original story” and gets bashed for every time a fan dont agree with the interpretation, or they write something new, and get an overall bashing for that;)

  18. Simon Musk
    At 20. April 2010 19:49 o'clock

Been discussing the weight thing with my son who is a pro wrestler and an expert in nutrition. He thinks it is possible to bulk up 50lbs in 6 to 8 weeks if Momoa is under strict supervision.Anyway although I still love the Arnold Conan movie Momoa still looks more the part of the Cimmerian.I cant understand why so many people are cynical about the new Movie. I just glad they didn’t choose a well known face for the part of Conan.I’m looking foward to it I just hope they don’t tone down the violence they did with Conan the Destroyer!

  19. Finn
    At 20. April 2010 19:59 o'clock

Arnold was around 230lb for Conan I believe. Momoa is probably around 200lb normally. Adding 50lb of muscle is basically impossible for him, or would take years considering he already seems to have lifted for years. I think Bob Sapp would be a better Conan. He has no acting skills like Momoa (Sapp may even be a more experienced actor), he also doesn’t look anything like Conan, but he at least he has the build for it.

Imagine Momoa as Rambo. It’s funnier if you imagine the dreadlocks and the red headband.

  20. Finn
    At 20. April 2010 20:06 o'clock

He could probably gain some muscle and fat both to help him seem bigger.

  21. Simon Musk
    At 20. April 2010 20:16 o'clock

I still think we shouldn’t sit in judgement till we see how much he has bulked up,plus it may not be true that he has only had 6 weeks to put on weight.Lets face it reliable information from the set etc is in very short supply.Like I said in a previous entry William Smith in his prime would have made a superb Conan. He was fantastic as a “Heavy” and always had an air of danger and fury about him.

  22. Steve Dilks
    At 20. April 2010 21:26 o'clock

I agree with Simon’s comments on Conan the Destroyer.I too as a kid loved it but find it an impossible embarassment now.My favourite cringeworthy scene is the drunk round the campfire bit.M has been quoting it all throughout this blog. Was that Arnie’s attempt at improv one wonders? Its so awful even by his standards.
On the weight issue 50lbs is a lot ,especially for a guy of Momoa’s build who is not a heavyweight.I am starting to think it won’t matter that much since a lot of people agree Arnie was slow and too beefy.I guess the reason he wore no armour in Destroyer was that he was so big it looked like an axe could bounce off his tits.

    At 20. April 2010 21:31 o'clock

Having spent the last 20+ years of my life as a fitness trainer and medical exercise specialist…I guareentee that it’s impossible to put on 50 lbs. of muscle is 6 weeks on him…even on steroids and HGH. If he wanted to look fat and bloated he may be able to put on 50lbs. in 6 weeks, which is about 8lbs./wk but the health risks would not be worth it in my opinion and he would definitely look fat and not muscular and ripped.

I’ve had the privilage of seeing pics of Jason as Conan and he does look bigger but not as big as I personally invison Conan to be. He has more of an athletic build than a powerfull looking build.

Having met and worked with Bob Sapp on the set of Conan, I can honestly say that he wouldn’t make a good Conan, IMO. As much as I like the guy, he fits the roll as Ukafa much better than if he was playing Conan. The dude is HUGE! If anything…he fits the character of the Incredible Hulk far better than he ever would as Conan.

  24. Ray
    At 20. April 2010 21:39 o'clock

Just as a head’s up or to help some of you invision what Jason’s current physique looks like. IMO, he’s a dead ringer for Barry Windsor-Smith’s interpretation of Conan. Google it if you’re not sure what that looks like.

    At 20. April 2010 22:18 o'clock

@ray:Thats a good interpretation. as far as the arnold movies are concerned, I enjoy the first one as an interpretation of howard’s works in general, in fact i just reread my baen edition kull and find milius’s conan has a little more in common with kull( now just a little not that much) than conan. The philosophical stuff, thulsa doom the slavery bit ( though different for kull , he was a slave and not conan), so for what it is I enjoy and it’s better than many others in the genre. The destroyer I used to watch as a kid, today I find it hilarious(unintentionally, because its soooo stupid, and if you’ve read my posts, very quotable too!) because it’s like the adam west batman or roger morres 007, it’s pure camp. on the negative, it has nothing to do with howard at all and gives a poor first impression to those who don’t know.I once said , that because of the many body weight excercises and ripped yet lean and un bodybuilder like physiques mma fighters or boxers have,I kind of imagined conan as maybe a light heavy to heavyweight in that area. ray, is it safe to say momoa is leaning toward that?

Brock is a huge dude, even as an mma fighter. his armspan is incredible. To me he’s a bit more on the arnold side, ( milius not the second one)like a human bulldozer.I do like the look for momoa based on what you’re saying.I think what i’m gonna try to do ,is come up with actors , wrestlers, boxers and mma guys who could at least visually make up a good conan. I’ll throw them out and tell me ( or even throw a few out there too) what hits and what misses. If i went towards a wrestler to me even though hes older now ( maybe king conan) it was always stone cold steve austin. He has a hard build those volcanic blue eyes, and barbaric attitude to match. He just can’t act to save his life. a few actors I would like ( from any time period and counting that they would bulk up of course) maybe are robert shaw( quint from jaws and red grant in from russia with love) anthony quinn( la strada) clint eastwood( anything awesome!!). I happen to know former ufc fighter pete sell, and if he had a few more inches in height he has a mean look and at roughly six feet, he’s an intimidating guy.like i said i’m doing this more for fun than anything else but if anyone can think of an actor or fighter or whoever throw it in . Ray , thank you again, I meant to ask what other work you have done that we may recognize you in? All of you guys and gals are awesome btw!!

I remember the general fan discussion on IMDB about a year ago. Most people agreeed that we wanted more acting ability and agility, rather than massive build. It was more important that Conan could climb a cliff wall and run fast. This was the general oppinion of the Howard fans that really know their Conan. So, I should say Momoa is a good choise. As we have said so many times before: the problem with this production, as far as we know, is the storyline/script (being a revenge story, for example), and not the actors.

  39. Steve Dilks
    At 21. April 2010 11:03 o'clock

Well, I for one am guilty of being skeptical of Mr.Momoa, but…we shall see.Its true the revenge storyline has worn thinner than one of Conan’s cast off scabbards and doesn’t fan the flames of enthusiasm.I can only hope that Conan does a sort of tour of the Hyborian world in his “quest”, visiting many exotic and fabulous locations as Howard did in “The hour of the dragon”.I hope the sea battle will be a worthy addition to this movie. Its not really been done in a heroic fantasy movie that I can recall.

  40. Simon Musk
    At 21. April 2010 16:32 o'clock

So when are we going to see some pix of Momoa as Conan on the blog then? It would be great to see what he looks like.Arnold was ok in the first movie,I met him at a body building semina in the UK just after the movie had wrapped. To be honest he was an arrogant dick! He was only interested in other body builders and wasnt interested in tlaking about Conan at all.

  41. Simon Musk
    At 21. April 2010 17:36 o'clock

By the way Ray,have you seen any of the swords being used in the movie ie Conan’s sword?
The impressive thing for me about the Milius movie was Conan’s father’s sword and the Atlantean sword.I hope they have designed and made some great weapons unlike the terrible Conan TV series where it looked like the swords etc had been knocked up in an hour or so!!!

  42. Ray
    At 21. April 2010 17:48 o'clock

Simon, Yes, I got to see the swords and they look very similar to the ones used in the Milus movie.

  43. Simon Musk
    At 21. April 2010 18:02 o'clock

Thanks for that Ray,good to know they have made an effort.Have you seen Jason Momoa in action on the set yet or was your part right at the start of the movie ie the attack on Conan’ people when he is a child?

  44. Steve Dilks
    At 21. April 2010 19:13 o'clock

I dont get the thing with the Milius swords being used in this movie if its not a remake as they say.Surely too there should be some copyright issues.Jody Samson was the designer of those impressive weapons.Unfortunately he passed away.I can’t see Milius being impressed either!I do hope Conan can get too use any sword that comes to hand this time round, as in the books. If they’re not careful the Atlantean sword could end up being the only talking point of the movie and be its Achilles heel.

  45. Ray
    At 21. April 2010 19:14 o'clock

I wish I got to meet Jason but no, I was in the beggining of the movie but did get to meet some other very talented and charismatic people while I was there.

  46. Ray
    At 21. April 2010 19:16 o'clock

Steve, where did you get under the impression that the Milus swords are being used in the new Conan movie?

  47. Steve Dilks
    At 21. April 2010 20:40 o'clock

Ray,firstly from the teaser poster(see blog heading) and what you said about the swords being “very similar to the ones used in the Milius movie.”Since they are very ditinctive looking I can’t see how they can be mistaken. With all due respect to you this has been a point of interest of debate on whether or not this movie is A)A remake B)a re-imagining or C)a totally new thing altogether.I think C is what we’re all pretty much hoping for here.

  48. Steve Dilks
    At 21. April 2010 20:57 o'clock

Hey M, on the subject of Kull what do you think of “By this axe I rule!”? I actually preffered it to the rewritten Conan version.Oh, theres a great interpretation of that story in Milius’ “Crown of Iron” script when you get round to reading it.I agree that Kull had a more philosiphical vein running through them that suited Milius down to the ground.I never really noticed before.Kull would have been perfect for him too make!

  49. m
    At 21. April 2010 23:21 o'clock

I think I like the end of by this axe i rule better. I think the pacing is actually more to the point in the kull story too( which is weird to me in itself) but what i love about the conan story is the mood .Kull also strikes me as duller company than conan would be( not that it’s bad it’s different) and though conan has his melancholies, i think he enjoys his life more than kull does.Kulls world to me though seems more on the fantasy end of things where conans hyborian age seems to be more grounded and fleshed out in history too.Kull is worth another look at as a character. people consider him to be the prototpe to conan, but I find them to be very dfferent aside from physical similaritiesI’m hearing the dope who penned ninja assasin is gearing up to write kull of atlantis.ugh.I wanted to touch the whole original idea vs story adaptation for conan in film now that i’m home . what if they continue to do what they started ( and hopefully find the money to finish) with red nails, adapt howards stories to animation maybe? and save original concepts for live action film? I’d love to see even the tower of the elephant or the vale of lost women as adult oriented animation .I think some of the creatures would tranlsate well too.Simon I have a question for you: when you met arnie how tall did he appear to you? I’ve been told he’s not as tall in person (I’ve heard even five foot eleven, not six foot two!)

  50. m
    At 21. April 2010 23:26 o'clock

@ steve : I falied to mention this too about kull, he seems to have troubles with women, I think had he been laid more he would have been jollier!!:)

  51. Steve Dilks
    At 22. April 2010 05:25 o'clock

Hey M,youre right about the Kull stories.Theres a strange feeling of unreality about them.Straight adaptions into DVD animation of the Conan stories might be a good idea.A similar idea worked with Hellboy.Maybe if the movie does ok they’ll revive the Red nails project… Just been checking out some youtube.Seems Mr.Momoa has a great tatoo stretching from his wrist up the length of his left forearm.I guess thats where the CGI enhancement comes in.He has a certain gruffness to his voice and a moody looking countenance,I suppose.Body wise, well I hope he knows his carbs is all I’m saying.

  52. m
    At 22. April 2010 08:29 o'clock

that unreality works well when put into context with the conan stories.in other words, kulls stories are like the myths and legends told in conans time almost completely lost due to cataclysm and must be read with a grain of salt.Hey didn’t they use kullish serpent men in the silly 90′s conan cartoon? The tattoo should be no problem. I remember a few years back when 8 mile came out, all of eminems tattoos were gone and thats a low budget indie type movie.I’m giving Momoa the benefit of the doubt so I’m not really bothering watching his previous stargate/baywatch shows at this point because I don’t think theyre gonna be a good indicator of conan, even though his ronan dex (what a freaking annoying name!)is drawing a comparison.I read that he will be revealed as conan to the public on july 22nd at some comic convention, I read it in either one of this months or last months article on the cimmerian.com. One of the writers there claims he was shown a pic of momoa and was very impressed by it. this was a guy who was bashing the movie. check it out if you can, you might have to search through the articles though.I’ll look for it later today .

  53. Finn
    At 22. April 2010 13:54 o'clock

I don’t think we are gonna hear anything like Mr. Blah Blah recently got a peek at Momoa and said, “God damn! He is a pair of pecs glued onto a mass of collarbone and ribs with four toothpicks attached for limbs. The company realizes it chose the wrong actor but it’s too late.”

They aren’t going to let anything like that get out before the official “unveiling”. They are keeping him under wraps so they can control the information flow. Every so often, someone will leak something out like, “Wow, I am really impressed!” You think they would have risked showing the guy on the cimmerian website the picture if he hadn’t already agreed (or even been paid) to say something positive? Something like that may even show up on this blog, to win over fans or build excitement for the movie. I will completely disregard that, because it is like propaganda.

Just for clarification…I can guareentee everyone here that I personally haven’t been paid to say anything positive about the film or leak out any other info. Everything I have shared is my personal opinion and I will always try to be as honest and as upfront as I can.

@Finn I certainly will not write anything positive about any part of the movie, if I don’t firmly believe it. No one can pay me to say something nice, that I don’t think. I will always try to be as fair as possible towards the project, if there is a basis for it. If they do something, behave in a certain way, that I don’t like, then I will present the details and afterwards always my personal opinion on the topic. That’s how I always try to write a blogpost. First facts and information, then my personal opinion. So everyone can read the info and make up his own mind, before being hit by my personal view on things.

I truly believe in everything that’s posted here and greatfull that such site exists!Too bad not a lot of people actually take part in descussion.Majority doesnt care for tiny details like we do…so I guess if I would imagine that somebody was paid to spread faulse info the impact wont be great anyway.
…non-howard fans will attend the theaters anyway and there gonna be millons of them-but i think that good thing

p.s. from the other hand Finn maybe the guy from some company that desperately wanting the project to be ruined and Nuimage to collapse…
    or he maybe just moron:)

This discussion is getting a little petty right now. Can’t we all just discuss the movie and related Conan stuff without dissing other people’s opinions? Surely we all want the movie to be great, whats the point of joining the discussion if all you are going to do is insult each other?
Personally I am thankful that Ray has shared what he can with us,it doesn’t sound to me that he is in the Movie Companies pocket!!

Ha, Ha! Nice one Finn! I like your humour.I know what you mean but the Howard editor for Wandering Star books was quizzed on whether or not he had “fallen prey to the dark side” and said no-he couldn’t comment on Momoa’s acting ability (cough!)but that the pics he had seen of him as Conan looked good.Ray too had good things to say about him and I certainly don’t think he would tell an untruth considering his personal favourite for the role would be a human bulldozer!Oh and Serg I don’t think millions of anybody are going to flock to see this movie.I saw Jason Momoa playing guitar on youtube.Sounded like his twiggy arms were broken.

@simon,well thats what i’ve been telling – lets discuss the news, but positively!!!i’m tired of potecting Momoa as Conan-I feel betrayed :)

    p.s.1@steve
You miss my point about millions- Conan is well known around the globe, thats why people WILL go to see it ( and girls will definately will go to see some muscled guys in action-thats what my girlfriend told me!)Also I think Stephen Lang will bring alatta people to the screen himself-he’s amasing……..

OMG, and first im gonna agree with you that Jason SUCKED and SCREWED himself with that thing he called ‘guitar play’ Having about 10 yeras of professional guitar shred myself have to admit that he really shouldnt show that crap on public( I now that has nothing to do with the movie but i had nobody to share with-I hope in the movie Conan will not play guitar ;) )

Ray and Waldgeist, both of you have been balanced and objective. But tens of millions of dollars are involved in this movie, and these hollywood companies really do wage a kind of publicity war over their movies, because if word gets out that critics or the fan base don’t support the movie, or that the movie isn’t good, it can detract from the movie’s performance on opening weekend, affect how long it runs in theaters, etc. Wikipedia says this movie has a 100 million dollar budget. I don’t know how accurate that is. The investors and CEOs don’t really want to lose 100 million dollars. A few million of that may go to advertising. You think they won’t pay people who run blogs and film review websites to unobjectively hype their movie to help build support for it? There’s nothing illegal about it. It makes good business sense. If Momoa taps into a secret mesomorph wellspring in his training and comes out looking something like a cimmerian, that will be great. But I am gonna keep being skeptical because when I type in “Jason Momoa” on google images, I keep getting harry hamlin with a tan and dreadlocks instead of Conan.

Serg-Your optimism for this movie is highly commendable. In defense of Mr.Momoa’s guitar wizardry I guess it makes a change from surfing all day. What is guitar shred? A technique?Does it apply mostly to heavy metal?

Wasn’t the PROJECTED budget 100 million?Gradually its cut down to between 60-70 from what I’ve read both here and in the movie mags. Its supposed to be Lionsgate’s biggest production yet.Finn you have a cold and cynical view of Hollywood tactics…That to say that when people moan about others slagging this production off its because some know how these corporations work. This is not just a movie. There is a lot of money riding on this and they need to sell it whether they give two figs about Conan or not.Its a business venture pure and simple.

Firstly lets get off Momoao’s back and just WAIT and see how he measures up as Conan.Im sure they could have picked some meathead to play the role but from what I have seen of him in Stargate he has decent acting abilities. The movie could suprise us all, plenty of movies have had endless re-writes and turned out well. The first Oliver Stone script sounded ridiculous with armies of mutants etc!!
I really dont know what Conan fans expect from a movie,we won’t ever get a Conan in a movie that looks like a Frazetta painting.Im hoping for the best.Im old enough to know what Movie companies bare like but it could suprise us all in a good way

wow what’d i miss today? Ray like i said howard fans are a tough crowd.we’re kind of like howards cimmerians in a sense. tribes that have small fights with one another but unite against common foes…im just being a wiseass now.:) simon i have to ask again, is arnold really as tall as he seems or he a littlr shorter in person?i do have to say this too simon: i think nispel is very capable of delivering an impressive looking conan movie, even as impressive as those cool frazetta paintings, i think theyre aiming for that.my question is ( and its not a negative in any respect) should they? And guys and gals remember this too: we’re all passionate for a conan movie that we can all agree is great. And I know we all love movies too. But when it boils down to it,it’s a movie,im sure we’ll all be paying our hard earned money to see it, no matter how it ends up. there’s no need to bicker amongst ourselves over it it’s still a year away. And as i’ve said before , good or bad, we’ve will always have the original works of REH and whatever other works inspired by his writings. nothing can take that away. So let’s enjoy each others company have a beer while we post and take the news as it comes.

Perhaps I was a little vague on my last post, due probabley to my inept writing skills, but I was in agreement with Finn on studio movie mogul policies. It is good to be a little cynical when watching a movie company mess around with the character you grew up with and love!Of course most of the time you have to sit back and laugh at the absurdity of the whole thing and yourself. It shows to me how little I’ve REALLY changed from when I was a kid with all the hopes, excitement and expectations.I truly do appreciate this blog and all the people I’ve got to shoot the breeze with on what,as Serg points out, is a new milestone in the career of Conan.

Yes I agree the blog is great even if we don’t agree all the time.Im 52 now and the kid in me is still excited about a new Conan movie.I used to know Karl Edward Wagner rather well(rest his soul) he was a massive Conan fan but he still thought his anti-hero character Kane would have kicked the Cimmerian’s ass in a fight!!

Oh yeah these aren’t really fights(,more like almost heated debates )but the point is we avoid descending to those type of posts as it could easiliy get ugly here.I really dont look at other posts often but when i started checking this blog out i looked on some other sites for different things movies, sports, comics, just because I had some time and i really can’t understand on these other sites and blogs how people talk to each other. For what? It’d not like we’re all gonna find each other and have it out right? Anyone can be a tough guy typing behind a keyboard, so whats being proven? To me the novelty is dead , maybe it would be funny if I were 15 but even then I’m not sure. And thats why I like coming here, we all know better.Hey can you guys believe russell crowe in ridley scotts gladiator 2 ..i mean a new robon hood movie? I never saw that coming!

Simon,Karl was the only writer who came close to getting Howard right in terms of mood and style. His Kane stuff was great.I really got into the “Night winds” collection and the novel “Bloodstone”.Back in the ’70s he tried to revive Howard’s Conan stuff in all its original glory only to be scuppered by,yes you guessed it,Mr.De Camp.I really liked the “Echoes of Valour” anthologies too. They reprinted, under his editorship, some real fantasy classics-Manly Wade Wellman,Leigh Brackett and C.L.Moore.There was a guy who knew his stuff!I raise a toast to his shade in Valhalla!

When I was 5 years old watching conan the destroyer over and over brainwashing myself into thinking men should have big muscles and kill each other with swords, it didn’t matter to me that the movie wasn’t an accurate representation of REH’s character. I didn’t get upset that Conan had brown hair instead of black, or that he didn’t exactly come off as a thinking man. The REH fan criticisms didn’t exist in my world, I was just watching a great fucking movie. That eventually led me to the TOR Conan pastiches at the bookstore, and eventually the actual REH stories when they were published by baen books (it seems ace books seemed to be out of print in this time period).

This movie might wow us all after we see it, or it might seem like a steaming saffron colored dog turd with a bent hair sticking out of the side. Or something inbetween. Some kid is still gonna watch this movie a hundred times and jump up and down on the sofa and become a Conan (and jason momoa) fan. If it winds up being a good movie, none of this matters even if the casting or script isn’t to our liking. Right now we don’t have much information, and some of the information we do have is a little shaky, like some people have issues with the script, and forgive me serg, I have issues with momoa as Conan. It is like we are sailors shipwrecked on an island arguing about how to get off, and one guy thinks he saw a ship in the distance, and another guy is thinking about eating the first mate. If nothing else, it is interesting.

Jason Momoa is not conan and not because of Arnold ,LOL. Just, Jason Momoa does not seem to fit the mold for an epic character as, Conan. Too girly/wanna be manly thing. I am sure gay men will like it aswell as women you think they might be able to borrow his panties.
