Gisella Marengo is cast as witch mother in Conan

It seems we are going to have a lot of motherly love in Conan, because the trusted source revealed, that another mom of one of the main cast – in this case the witch mother of Marique (Rose McGowan) – Italian actress Gisella Marengo has been cast. So far Gisella Marengo has been mostly active in Italian movies. Besides the fact that she will play the role of the witch mother of Rose McGowan, not much is known about her part in the movie, so we have to wait until more is unveiled of how large the part, that she will play, really is.

It’s interesting to see, that the smaller the part, the more “howardian” the women get. Even though she will play a mom, she throws in a more voluptuousness  than all of the other actresses that were cast up to this point. We will see if they will utilize her in any sensual way, or if she will be wrapped in layers of witch clothes. All I can say is, the more sensual women we get, the better; especially if they are of Italian heritage (this has nothing to do of course with me being practically married to an Italian woman ;) )

    What. A. Hot. Girl.

BTW: this character was not in the leaked sinopsis or in the first draft of the screenplay… He will have a great role???

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

I hope she will get enough revealing screentime, as she is way more beautiful than Rose ;) , at least in my personal opinion.

  • http://poderfriki.com Kike

She is way more beautiful than Rose in the personal opinion of any rational human being.

But i´m very surprise with the changes… the rewrite was profound indeed. I don´t know if the movie is “more howardian” now, but it is definitely DIFFERENT.

  • Monolith

She really is “Howardian” type. I’m optimistic about the film and I don’t understand why REH fans are so pessimistic about it. Wait and give it a chance! One of the pruducers promised that new Conan movie will be closer to REH mythology and original stories than previous films. Now we know that women look like “original” and as curvy as they should be!

Short interview of producer (in swedish)

  • http://poderfriki.com Kike

The fans are very pessimistic because some script was leaked some time ago and some people read it and some people hated it.

  • m

Like I said before, if the movie ends up being solid I will be the first to admit i am wrong and I will put my feet in my mouth, and apologize here to all I’ve bad -mouthed. I will say that based on the choices of actresses and the recent article steve brought up in the cimmerian.com about momoa impressing the writer of the article based on his pictures shown, they certainly are getting better at selling this movie to the reh crowd. I’m skeptical ( again) but I’m willing to open my mind more.I’m a fan of howard and lovecraft and such but i will also admit that the knowledge that the people have here far surpasses me andI’ve been getting an education of sorts from everyone.now my other question is , with all these chicks being cast , is conan gonna have time to tap them all? ( except his mother, of course!)

  • Wolfie

More and more pretty ladies – one is beginning to wonder how long the movie will have to be to give enough screen time to them all AND Conan and still be able to tell a decent story…

  • m

” I believe you, but there’s magic in this game , and i have to be able to fight it with magic!”

  • Steve Dilks

Did you actually mean, this babe will be “unveiling her large parts” for this movie, Wald? Let it be so by the exagurated attributes of Baal!
Come on, Conan!I want this movie to be great!I’d love to go to the premiere with all you guys. No,I’m not drunk.I just want “The promise I was kingdomed…No,the kingdom…I was…promised.”

  • m

annudder queen? lot on your knife…i mean not on your life!I hear ya steve, despite all of my criticism ( and everything we’ve heard to jusitfy it)I want to be wrong about it and I want this movie and the people behind it to succeed.I was playing my ps3 conan last night while the fam slept and finally got to the end boss . i know it’s an older game and I don’t get to play much so it’s taking me a long time ( on average too, I know I suck) but it’s a pretty good underrated game. A poor mans god of war but thats not such a bad thing either.ron perelman is the voice of conan and it gives a good idea of what he may have sounded like in red nails.

  • Steve Dilks

Unfortunately I’m not a game fan so I can’t comment on the playability of Conan, but I did feel a sense of pride in our Cimmerian when I first saw it advertised.Like you M,I will be seccond in line to eat my sandalled feet if this movie is any good; aye,and my crusty loincloth as well. That pic of the new ‘witch mother’ is probabely the most honest and Howard-esque so far.All the other actor photos look like glossy casting calls for the latest hot t.v. show.I just hope Nispel can rough the look of this movie up enough to make the characters credible and not contrived like some horrible feature length episode of Xena.

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

@Steve nah.. I don’t think we are going to see anyones “bare breasted” glory in this one :) .. Don’t forget this is a Hollywood movie. These are Hollywood actresses. They can’t afford to go “blank”, or their career is down the drain. I think if there will be any nudity, it will be subtle and not full frontal, or reserved for “bystanders”.

  • Steve Dilks

By Crom’s brazen member ,bring back the ’80s I say…Miles ‘O Keefe in “Ator, the fighting eagle” or David Carradine in “The warrior and the sorceress”.Absolutely appalling movies with lots of gratuitous nudity thrown in just to fill in time. These days its just as cheap and easy to knock up a lousy CGI monster or some such.Who says technology is for the betterment of mankind?

  • STEFAN

    No nudity?
But that was my last hope with this movie.

  • m

As long as conan does not knock up any cgi beasties … remember when kull made out with that “bitch demon” at the end of kull the conquerer… couldn’t stomach that, and this is coming from the guy with whom the exorcist ( 73 not 2000) ranks in his top 5.I think the gratuitous nudity and violence was just what that movie was missing to rank up there with ator and such for lame fantasy. Anyone see the clash of the titans remake? I hear that it’s simply not worth seeing in 3-d this time, most critics here in new york are bashing it too but I dont really go by reviews. They think movies like conan the destroyer and ator are sword and sandal flicks, not the comedies they really are meant to be

  • m

@ steve: not really much of a gamer either but my wife picked me up the ps3 this past christmas. I hadnt played since my late teens so i thought it was nice diversion . aside the few kids games i bought for the girls i saw a used conan for twelve bucks so i could not pass that up. best twelve bucks i spent on a game.Is it cheating if I boil my loincloth before eating it?As far as the actresses and nudity are concerned, remember this: rose mcgowan did go somewhat nude in grindhouse, she doesnt have a huge career so she may get naked . Alot of these actresses ( except conans mother , because she’ll likely be dead 6 minutes into this, God I pray to the four winds there’s no “conception scene between her and perelman!!!))are new to the scene, they may just do a nude scene for this flick. They are going for an “R” ratina and Nispel strikes me as someone who wont shy away either.

  • Steve Dilks

Funny you should mention “Clash of the titans”.I thought a remake was totally uncalled for.It was treated as an outdated joke the first time round, though in hindsight I think it ok.What I don’t like about this treatment (aside from the over the top CGI) is the portayal of Perseus as some sort of rampaging skinhead soccer hooligan. The original at least took pains to give the hero and the cast the classic Greek look. This hard, gritty, dirty look goes against all the mythic Greek aesthetic that their poets, writers, artists and sculpters strived to achieve. It seems Hollywood still goes by what sells. It worked for “300″ so…I hope with “Conan” they try a less commercial approach and not just a wannabe of some other fantasy flick. As to the nudity issue,if a wench gets cold encircled in Conan’s mighty thews he just throws her on the fire doesn’t he?

  • derFeef

It is weird that the more news pop up about this movie, the more optimistic I get. @ Waldgeist – lucky you!

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

Hehe.. while we are at it.. I created a little website for my girlfriend, as she is a hobby photographer, so guys if you wanna see beautiful ladies properly photographed – http://www.gestiefeltekatze.com and follow the link to her facebook page to become a fan and enjoy all the new stuff she ads on the way :)

  • http://poderfriki.com Kike

I have a few words about that website:
BY CROM!! Actually, THIS is how women look like…

  • m

took a look , waldgeist. Good stuff ,my compliments.Your girlfriend definitely has talent , she should pursue it. hey steve, methinks conan throwsem in the fire when they get too hot as well!!also, I liked perseus better when he looked like jim morrison too.

  • Steve Dilks

Hah, M, you read my mind! Apparently Morrison asked to have his haircut like the statue bust of Alexander the Great, you know shoulder length with curls. He was a big lover of the Greek philosophers and their hedonism.Certainly a man born out of time.On another note I took home a baby pigeon I found two weeks ago and he’s growing quite big.He squeaks a lot and has started to fly round my room. He’s got a real attitude and stabs me with his beak if I get too close or gives me a lightning swift karate chop with his wing.In short I love him to bits. He’s sitting behind me now preening and planning more deviltry, no doubt.I think I shall name him…Conan.

  • Steve Dilks

Decided that today is the day to set Conan the Pigeon free. There is a pond in our town centre with ducks and a big flock of pigeons so I shall take him there.I shall miss him, but…”Freedom,so long an unremembered dream-was his!”
Just think if the filming schedule is for two months then they are already nearly half way through. These days I guess pot-production takes just as long.I still have many foreboding doubts about the quality of this film.

  • Steve Dilks

Conan the Pigeon is free.He soared away on mighty wings with a whole bunch of others that came down to peck around.
If(when?)this movie fails to ignite I have at least Disney’s adaption of “A princess of Mars” to look forward to.Althogh not quite Conan I still love Burroughs Barsoom novels.

  • m

“perhaps your lord was like a wild animal kept too long…perhaps!” as far as the new movie, whats done is done , come july we’ll get a look at it.if someone’s good enough to leak out a shot even sooner.I hope someone took peeks at this blog and other sites like the cimmerian and took notes.I mentioned one time that ridley scott( as did others, I think you did too steve)) could do a good conan movie , you know who else i think would be really good ? I think the coen brothers could really do the character justice, though I doubt it would ever happen. they really got inside the adaptation of no country for old men,( didnt read all of it yet though) which has this desolate civilization in decline feel to it,and an unapologetic brutality.

  • Steve Dilks

Hey M,I believe Ridley Scott was approached the first time round back in the late ’70s and was keen to do it but then pulled out for no apparent reason.”Blade runner” came out about the time barbarian did, so if that was the reason I think he can be excused!I know Ron Cobb worked with him on “Alien” which could be how he got the set design gig for Conan. There was some cool talent involved back then.Who do we have even remotely like that now?Set design,sfx,costume-all this is vital to the production of a good looking fantasy flick.Otherwise we get the bowl haircuts and fancy dress hire outfits of “The sword and the sorcerer”.Coen brothers?Conan? Now THAT would be weird…

  • Fayric

Its a good thing we still can dream of Conan II and III; what kind of director(s), what original Conan stories they are based on, and so on;)

  • Steve Dilks

Ah,how sweet the pen that expresses optimism!I for one, Fayric ,would like to see some developement, you know Conan as a mercenary taking on larger responsibilities as in Howard’s “Black colossus”,a pirate as in “The pool of the black one”,a frontier scout a la “Beyond the black river” or a desert chieftan;- “A witch shall be born”.Conan has great potential to break out of the cliche fantasy movie formulas due to the sheer range of his fighting proffessions.Conan can be Lawrence of arabia one minute, a transplanted western the next and still have time to be Captain Blood.Directors should look to these sort of movies for inspiration instead of the same old “Beastmaster” dross.

  • m

remember if the chance these films are successful ( as well as approved by conan/ howard fans) they’ll tend to take a life of their own. Some may be great some poor. Just ask roger moore, he’ll tell you all about strying from a classic character.

  • m

there’s another great article on the cimmerian about future planned reh adaptations. Fair warning though, it’s not looking good…I completely agree that conan can transcend genres, by the way. I actually envision tower of the elephant as more of a claustrophobic midnight horror movie of sorts.there’s a dreamlike (more like anightmare) quality to it as conan gets further to his discovery and the gruesome task he must perform. Some of those ideas in that story, when expanded upon, are as terrifying as anything I’ve seen and the tower itself is like ( can be perceived)a character.I hate to use this as an example but think the exorcist: the scenes where they just sort of show regans bedroom doo, or even the staircase inside the house, leading to the “room”. you know whatever is behind that door is beyond comprehension, but you are forced by the filmaker to enter against your will.We the viewer must be made to feel frighten on what lurks next within the tower, and it will underscore the “balls” of our young brash cimmerian who keeps furthering on and even he questions his sanity at some point based on what he sees.what do you guys think? Am I nuts or is it an interesting concept?

  • m

I meant regans bedroom door not doo. sorry

  • Steve Dilks

I think it takes a filmaker to properly understands where the writers source material is coming from to make it work.Howard’s stuff was built largely around atmosphere, mood and tension.Let us not forget that he was writing Conan for a horror magazine-not a straight fantasy one-and had to write his stories accordingly. If he could have sold any of them to ,say ,”Argosy” magazine I’m pretty sure some Conan would have ended up as straightforward historical yarns instead.Todays movie directors lack the subtlety ,I find ,to pull off what made films like “The exorcist” or Kubrik’s “The shining” work.Moviemaking has become less a craft and more a commodity to be sold.James Cameron’s ghastly popcorn fest “Avatar” is proof of that.

  • m

I have no desire to see that movie(avatar) at all. I haven’t enjoyed a cameron flick since T-2 and lets be honest even that was more a commodity to be sold as you say.And I must also confess, I’ve never seen a harry potter flick or a pirates of the carribean movie to boot.nor am I enthused to go out and see them either for the same reason. And though I enjoy lotr a lot,I cant help but somewhat feel the same pretentiousness about it.I want to blame star wars for this but even the original star wars had character. The irony is for me , the original summer blockbuster of the past generation, jaws, is probably my all time favorite movie, where did they start to go wrong?I do believe good films are still being made ( eastern promises no country for old men the departed any clint eastwood flick)but not many in the genre that hollywood is limiting conan to. I am in the process of rereading some of the howard stuff i own , finished cormac mac art, and it is great stuff. Almost done with kull and it’s better than I remember and has more of a mythical fantasy rather than historical one. next is solomon kane and bran mak morn.Well guys , feed on this tell me what you think It’s a beautiful but chilly morning here in ny and I gotta get my girls reading for free fishing at the park. enjoy your day , everyone.

  • Fayric

The joy of making great and original movies has been worn down by a hard commersial industry and the focus on blockbuster names. The same tired actors showing up in the same parts over again, and even making the same movies over again; it just dont get exiting anymore. But then you see a Spanish, Russian or korean director with some great ideas and new faces, and you realise the art is not dead yet, its just left hollywood to rot from the inside. True, some stuff are still good, but even exelent movies like “The Dark Knight” is crammed with the commersial default casting.
But most of the time you are right, its better to sit down with a good book and let your imagination run wild for a while, undisturbed by flat animations and overexsposed actors.
