Mickey Rourke is out Ron ‘Hellboy’ Perlman is in to play Conan’s father

As just reported by NyMag.com The Wrestler Mickey Rourke has signed off from playing Conan’s father and instead the infamous Ron Perlman has taken over the job literally in the last minute, since on the 9th March, Leo Howard wrote on his webpage, that he was flying over to Bulgaria to start shooting soon after. There is no additional info as to why Mickey or the producers changed their minds and how this change will affect the performance of the bunch.

Ron Perlman has some special connection with the Conan franchise, as he has already been the voice of Conan in the videogame made by THQ, and was supposed to voice over Conan in the comic adaption of the Red Nails shortstory by Robert E. Howard.

I am not entirely sure I like this rushed approach to this project, the last minute casting etc… because it makes the project look like rushed art, which is never a good thing. In most other, well done movies, the actors meet up 2-3-4 weeks prior to actual shooting and do test-readings, rehearsal, sometimes together with the writers and directors, to discuss their characters and to make last minute changes to the script and dialogue. In almost all movies, the directors claim that these readings brought the characters forward and empowered the actors to make it their own. In this movie everything is so last minute, that I don’t know if they’ve got the time to actually improve upon dialogue, script and the like. But we’ll have to see how it turns out in the end, before we cry foul of course!

big grizzly guy being replaced by another big grizzly guy to say big grizzly things like ” conan, do not stray the path of the sword , for when you die and face crom , he will judge your valor ” While boy conan looks on with glee and slight confusion…hmm sounds familiar.Hey does conan have a mother? who’s playing her? One of the locals?Rourke is a smart actor ,I suspect he figured out this movie would not be good for his career?

  • derFeef

Hm, don´t know how to think about this. The last minute change is surely a bad idea as you already said this whole project feels rushed. On the other hand, we do not have a single idea how big the role of Mr. Perlman is and how much screentime he will get.

But it looks like they want to get the movie done as fast as possible.
Is there a clue why Rourke signed off?

  • Fayric

Ha, I quote myself from the post about Rourke playing Conans father:

“Anyway this cast seems like the standard “one-good-established-actor-cast” most crappy fantasy movies nowdays have (often played by Ron Perlman)”

However, I do like Ron to play the father, and I think he would have been a good Conan if he was 45 years younger. Besides he is the voice of Conan in both the animated “Red Nails” and the “Age of Conan” game.

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

@Fayric not in Age of Conan, only in THQ’s Singleplayer console title Conan.

  • m

“you scratch like a child !” “let crom judge you!” I may have to go dust off the game now for kicks. And you know what, you’re right , he could have made a decent conan actually .

  • Ian

Wasn’t it Lance Henriksen who did the voice for conan in Age of Conan?

  • Steve Dilks

Hey M, Basil Poledouris passed over into the realms of Valhalla a few years ago now possibly making noise on the anvils of the gods with Wagner.
The whole Ron Pearlman thing made me nearly choke on my breakfast.I remember Fayric’s original comment.Just goes to show that uncaring business suited types run this show.Unless they’re actually swiping ideas from this site.In which case…Hey guys do you think the scipt will deal with Conan’s latent homosexuality and cross dressing as in L.Sprague de Camp’s famous masterpiece, Conan and the Bandits?

  • m

Well I guess we can cross basil off the possible composer list.Though Fayric really did nail it with Perlman, I can’t say I’m that surprised that Rourke dropped out. He’s in a comeback sort of mode and he must see or know this movie wont help that…which of course is bad new for us.Is perlman a conan fan though? Or is it for the paycheck? He did the 360/ps3 game red nails and this? conan and the bandits…chapter 7, lointcloths and leather?

  • Lance Boyle

Waldgeist, you have gaps in your journalism as usual, having failed to mention that Perlman was in the Nispel-directed Pathfinder. It seems that Marcus isn’t looking too far outside his immediate circle of work colleagues for cast members. So when does this disaster start shooting, monday the 15th?

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

@Lance Thanks for the broad bashing criticism, it’s very much appreciated to be bashed on a broad level for work and time I input privately, non-commercially on a private project.

Feel free to join the blog-team (this was not supposed to be a one-man party) and enlighten the readers with your perfect professional journalism.

  • Fayric

What did he do in Pathfinder? If he was in there, I would not blame Wald for not knowing; I cant find a confirmation my self. (you thinking about outlander, perhaps?)

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

The film is not listed on his IMDB profile, so I really don’t know what Perlman was supposed to play, perhaps some background viking. But I have no problem if someone finds additional info, but I really don’t think it’s necessary to make such a blunt statement and accuse me of getting the facts wrong all the time, without providing any proof. That is just rude.

  • Steve Dilks

I think you wrong there Wald…Hah,just pulling your loincloth old boy.I for one appreciate what you’re doing here for all us blood mad barbarians, but hey, swords at the door boys…I know Rolf Muller was in Pathfinder, which kind of makes this the second time round Nispel has remade Conan so he SHOULD be getting good at it by now.How about we petition John Milius to do a novel of his “King Conan:Crown of Iron” screenplay.I would welcome that.He did a novelization of his movie “The wind and the lion” back in 1974.

  • m

hey you also failed to mention that perlman starred as vincent in a non-nispel directed beauty and the beast …how could we forget that waldgeist?! we should come up with a drinking game where every time you think you see perlman in pathfinder, take a shot. All kidding aside, waldgeist you’re doing the best job anyone could possibly be doing considering all the rumors that exist out there . I think i said it before but i’ll say it again, i never go on these posts because there are so many film snobs and fanboys who ruin everything, they always have to either 1-up the useless info or make smarmy comments if disagreed with or challenged. this blog is nothing like that, cool people and smart but not snobby. I also appreciate everything you’ve done here, everybodys’ human and every post has been engaging. now I gotta go explain the riddle of steel to my 4 year old daughter and my 2 year old daughter to ” fight with a real weapon, not with a toothpick!” keep up the good work waldgeist and everyone keep the comments going , they’re great!

  • m

Also note I’d have to be drunk to sit through pathfinder to begin with…on with what is best in life !

  • Finn

After reading this post I was so disgusted I immediately went into my closet and put my finger down my throat and dry heaved for an hour. How could you not mention the Nispel-Perlman connection, Waldgeist? Just kidding. Great blog. I am not so sure I can believe Ron Perlman sired Jason Momoa, though….who also happens to be….Conan.

  • derFeef

Ron Perlman did not play in Pathfinder but he was in Outlander. Very clever, Lance Boyle, you blame Waldgeist for something you got wrong.

    Kids these days…

  • Hobie

    LOL! @ derFeet.

Nice catch. Poor Lance Boyle. Hey uh…Pot? The kettle’s on the phone for you.

  • Hobie

    Oops. I meant derFeef.
