Jason Momoa is training hard for Conan Movie

Desmoinesregister made their way to the training grounds of Jason Momoa, to talk to him and his family about the present situation and his preparations involved for the shoot of the Conan movie. Jason’s training started in early February, were he was enrolled in a six-week training course, to bulk up and get in shape to play the role of Conan with a bit more of muscle. He hopes to build up 10 pounds of muscle under the supervision of David Leitch, stunt performer on The Matrix and Bourne Ultimatum, before the shooting starts. Jason also did “research” with the original books instead of taking his inspiration on how to play Conan from the Arnold Schwarzenegger movies.

All in all, the interview/report seems fairly standard, but it doesn’t sound like Jason is totally hyped to play Conan, to be honest, since he says that this role is an “opportunity” for him, to play other roles. Of course, in the world of Hollywood one role is just a catapult for the next, but I would have loved to see more enthusiasm by the actor who plays such an important fantastical character as Conan in his first interview. I would have wanted to hear something in the line of “I hope this movie is going to be a big success, as I would love to grow this amazing character”. Maybe that is just his personality to play it cool and I hope he knows that playing Conan is not just an opportunity, but first and foremost a responsibility for a Legend in Fantasy.

    That won’t be much.

Did anyone read the article on the link above? Momoa is a total dick and its clear he doesnt give a &*%# about this role .Just the opportunity. It’s a door opener , and the article implies the same old village and family murder stuff where momoa states ” if it happened to me id seek revenge too”How do you say that and in the same breath say you’re reading the stories too? YOU LIE!!!! URGGGGG!!!!As I said before I do like the 82 movie but I was hoping for something original this time and truer to the source. IS he training in camel boxing too?

“I did more research with the books (than the movies), to tell you the truth,” he said.

This is total BS. If he read a single original story he would see that there is nothing to “research”.

This movie will sink without trace.I’m beyond exasperation about it.Every time someone involved opens their mouth it just gets worse.I wonder what fast food chain they’ll go with to market the kiddie toys?Lets face it even since the original Conan movie the industry has changed a lot.Films like this go by virtually unnoticed these days.Special effects are easier and cheaper to do.Stunts are virtually unrequired and as a result their is zero imagination and passion that goes into these PRODUCTS.By Crom I wager this will even make Scorpion King look like a faithful Howard adaption.
Oh and I sincerley doubt Jason Momoa knows what a book is the poseing bell end. “Go back to juggling apples”.

Please guys. No cursing or insult people that harshly. I know we are barbarians, but try to keep it a bit more civil :)

Criticize! Voice your concerns, but do so in an acceptable manner.

“Civilized men can get away with being discourteous because they know they can get away with it and not get their skulls split” grumbles Conan in a Howard tale. I can’t remember which one, but point taken Waldgeist.Maybe going back to “juggling apples” was a bit harsh though of course it does require some amount of training to do successfully. Like anything else you have to practise regularly, or you just get pulped fruit after one or two attempts-which won’t really impress anyone.I would say about six weeks would be enough to make you a grand master, about the same length of time it takes to buff up into a skull crushing man mountain and become a lightning swift sworsman-well,roughly anyway. If by then you can’t successfully spin a fruit or two, Crom will cast you out of Valhalla and damn you to a life of t-shirt folding…Hopefully.

Well to his defence, about the revenge story, its not really up to him to change the script or the character. Its his job to portray the Conan presented in the script, and sadly we all know what kind of Conan that is. He dont claim to understand Howards Conan as a seeker for revenge, just the Conan he is about to portray.

The real mockery is when a producer claims the script benefit from the strenght of the original stories, and how sucsess in a movie is measured by how much money it makes.

It seems to me that this Momoa is thinking if Arnold can get a career out of playing a dumb barbarian(which Conan is far from) and have a fruitful success.I can.
How wrong that thought would be.And how he can even think to walk in and breeze as Conan is beyond me.For me that guy who played Michael Myers in the recent Halloween had Conans height. And the kickinger had his build.Cover him head to toe in deep scars and crow black hair and smoldering blue eyes. And though you have him.As well as the acting skills of course^^
I am sorry but theres not a hope in hell with Momoa being Conan. For fans of the movie will just laugh at him as well as most of us Howard fans will.
The more i read about this long long wait since news of Crown of Iron/Conan of the Isles or whatever it was going to be.I only have dread left for next year.
And Conan will walk into the darkness with a troubled brow. And we will all cry for him.

OK, doors will open, but if this is going to be success, and as the production company stated, there are going to be sequels, be sure Momo you will return into the barbarian’s sandals. As we can see in his last years he did always portray some barbarians (Ronon dex, the HBO warrior…) so I think Momo, for Hollywwod producers you as actor will be always cast in simillar roles.

It kinda of depends if Raw Leiba drops out of the film like some of the blogs are saying he might, then Jason will look better,Raw Leiba is a tremendously ripped athlete with size.So if Leiba is in Jason better work out really really hard, but if he drops out and Gaspard gets the Ukafa role then Momoa doesnt have to workout at all,Gaspard is quite sloppy.

Six weeks? Even if he could put on six pounds of muscle in that time it wouldn’t be enough and it wouldn’t be ALL muscle! Clearly placing a wrestler in the movie would further show just how inept Momoa is! I sometimes think people confuse height with perceived strength! This is, most often, not the case and Leiba will end up looking far more powerful than Momoa which is SUPPOSED to be playing the most powerful man in the kingdom! It further disturbs me that Momoa is so nonchalant about the role! He should be honored! Especially considering the dozens of more qualified actors the got passed up for the role! There were literally guys that have been training most of there adult lives to play a role like this! How was it that they would consider a wrestler for the villain but not the main character?

I gotta agree with Mad MAX! They had a valid reason for not wanting to go with Kicklinger because they didn’t want to be confused with a remake of some kind and there is no refuting the similarities with Arnold. However you read my mind with the other two!Either would have been perfect in my opinion! I’ve met Mike O Hearn and he is certainly a physically domineering fellow! Not OVERLY muscular (for some that seems to be an issue) but very built and extremely strong in reality! He has an athletic and martial art base to boot! To top it off he is an American Gladiator and people already view him as a powerful and unstoppable person! Drasko Andjic looks the part as well and has been training for this kind of role for sometime!

There are plenty of actors more suitable. I like what James Purefroy said about Mo-mo. They are giving a man’s work to a boy.

Seriously guys… Mike O’Hearn? Did one of you watch “Barbarian” ???

    http://www.imdb.com/video/screenplay/vi3602383129/

He is THE WORST actor I’ve ever seen, wonder why there is no voice scene in the movie at all? Yes it’s because he’s THAT bad.

Well , for now it appears we will be sticking to our books, comics , artwork and video games ( hey I kinda like the ps3 xbox360 conan , yes I know its a god of war ripoff ) and former movies whatever value they hold to us ( or don’t) because this movie is not what any of us , no matter what conflicting opinions we have , want to see in a conan movie. See you guys in about six years when they try to reboot this stuff again, or maybe in twenty. Are they ever gonna do anything with that animated red nails or did that run out of cash? that seemed like it was showing promise…

  21. Waldgeist
    At 23. February 2010 18:24 o'clock

@m recent development of the Red Nails look like it will never see the light of day. Recently the lead animator posted work in progress animation sequences and he called the project being on an “indefinite halt”.

I am out of here because everyone wants a bodybuilder. I am starting to like Momoa because of you gus! Damnit.

  23. m
    At 24. February 2010 16:41 o'clock

thanks for the info on red nails, thats a real shame because it wasnt looking so bad . remember the illustrations of conan more or less came after howards death and if you look at the weird tales covers depicting conan… well crude comes to mind.Aside our own independent visualizations when reading, conan’s look had been definied the last 50 years or so mainly by frank frazetta, in turn marvel then dark horse. these artists draw figures that represents ideals physical aesthetic perfection. I think a lot of people want to see that on screen and bodybuilders look like living comic book characters…however going that route though it will look like conan stepped right out of a painting or drawing, you will sacrifice characterization and acting because the years it takes and devotion to craft it takes to make conan as convincing onscreen ( as i am guessing we want to see anyway not the general public)as say maximus, aragorn, well how can i compare it…. IT’s as silly sounding to a bodybuilder that momoa will look like conan after only six weeks of training, a bodybuilder will have what six weeks of acting classes? my point is no one shuld get so hung up anymore on who should be conan because it’s too late now but I have an idea… If any of you were in charge of hiring director producer actor even story synopsis what would it be? I am gonna think over my choices , but at least for now i would choose ridley scott as a director.

    At 24. February 2010 17:31 o'clock

That is a very interesting point! I have little faith in any actor and believe the producer is truly the one who makes the actor good or bad! Look how often a supposed good actor totally botched a role! As for my suggestion about Mike O Hearn… I didn’t know about any of his previous movies! I just mostly liked his likeness for the character! My mistake!

Here are some excerpts from the SHAD GASPARD interview to MTV, he said some interesting things:

MTV: What was it like meeting Jason Momoa? Do you think he’s the right choice for Conan?

GASPARD: Jason seemed like a pretty cool guy when I met him. And the fact that people are underestimating him, to me, it’s going to pay off. Unlike most pictures you see of him on the internet, he has already cut his dreads, and he has bulked up to a decent size right now — but he could probably put on another 10 to 15 pounds and look amazing on film. Whether he or any of us are right for “Conan,” we’ll just have to wait and see. But don’t knock the film until you see it.

MTV: Based on your audition process and from what you’ve seen thus far, do you think fans will be pleased with “Conan” when it comes out?

GASPARD: I think fans will really like the movie from what I’ve read. Old school fans hate change, but they’ve got to remember, a lot of people didn’t want Arnold to play the original Conan because they thought he was a big, dumb body builder. So, give this Conan a chance before you knock it. And new generation Conan fans, depending on the action and how they take the story, I think they’ll like the movie a lot.

And now for the REALLY funny part:

MTV NEWS: Shad, how did you land the opportunity to audition for “Conan” as Ukafa?

SHAD GASPARD: First off, I am a big fan of “Conan.” I have the VHS and DVD version [of the Arnold Schwarzenegger films].

So, everything he knows about Conan comes from the Ahnuld movies? And he thinks hes a FAN??? LOL

Crom laughs AGAIN, from the top of his mountain…

and they’re playing the daniel craig” look how everyone was opposed to him until casino royale came out” angle. Look gaspard it’s like this : now i’m sure you guys are reading these blogs. casting momoa can be forgiven if what is being said about the story and rewrites are not true and overall plot is something we’re not hearing and this really is made trueto howard. I’ll be the first to apologize and admit I’m wrong. That said , everything we’ve heard and read out of your mouths indicate the contrary , that none of you know a thing bout conan aside the films and paintings and are gauging your success based on these perceptions . The people who vent on this site know the character , have read howards conan stories and others and are intelligent enough to smell b.s. which is what i think we are being fed.I also suspect you shouldnt have reason to care:sword and sandal or fantasy films are the rage and if you guys can win over say the 300 crowd or lotr , your movie will make money regardless of how loyal the material is or isnt.I apologize for a strong use of words, and I can’t speak for everyone here but do you think casting a boy conan or wild orchids mickey rourke is gonna impress anybody here? do you think name dropping frazettas artwork or knowing how to spell howard, and that yes,he created conan is gonna ease any anxieties? I want howards work treated with the respect and attention it deserves, his writings and characters have made alot of people alot of money and the least that can be done is to pay attention and not throw smoke and mirrors up.

Jason Who?? I googled this guy and all I can ask is, “What… they couldn’t get Paul Walker to do it?” They can’t be serious. The dude could probably pull off Eddy Gordo but a Conan, he is not. I would rather gouge out my eyes with the horn of Dagoth, than watch this turd. I actually feel bad for Mickey Rouke. He just got his movie career back on track and now this!
