Leo Howard is cast as Young Conan

Since we are obviously going to see an origins tale for the new Conan Movie(again…), they needed to cast an actor to play the role of Young Conan. According to Latinoreview, the descision is made and Young Conan will be played by 12 year old actor Leo Howard.

Leo Howard had some appearances on several TV series and the role for Young Snake Eyes in the G.I. Joe movie. Leo Howard is a brown haired and brown eyed young american actor, that has quite some skill in martial arts, making him a good choice for acting out the fights young Conan is going to have in the movie.

I personally just hope, he can tune down the “american” accent while acting out Conan, since I still don’t think it’s appropriate for a Cimmerian. In many ways he looks quite similar to the young Conan from the old Conan the Barbarian Movie, which is yet another hint at the fact, that we are not in for a re-envisioning, but a remake with “modern shoes”.

Its a good thing he actually knows some martial arts. And seriously, American accent and “looking to much like the young Conan The Barbarian” is not really things to get worked up about.
Id love to se this 12 year kid gut some Picts and soak in their blood.

If this kiddo is going to kick aquilonian asses at Venarium then I am quite glad. Although Conan was around age of 15 there

(By the way there was a nice quote in the PC game Conan the dark axe about Venarium:

The beggar: Please give a coin to a war veteran who fought at Venarium.
Conan: (throws him a coin): Here, and you are lucky you did not meet me there).

Well… I can see this choice and support it! Gotta do something about the brown eyes though and maybe dye the hair! The good thing about picking a child version of Conan is that you don’t have to be as exact! TO ME, a lot of the more unique characteristics about Conan were earned in battle and life. Things such as the scars, brawny build, and the tan were gotten through years of toil! The hair and eye color have to be right though! If they plan to do a time-lapse or something they may want to be a little more careful with a teen version! Maybe get an actor a bit older than the age he is playing. For instance, if Conan were to be 13, then get an actor that is perhaps 15 and more developed.Remember Conan has to be larger and stronger than his siblings! I’m not going to be overly critical of this choice though!

“And seriously, American accent and “looking to much like the young Conan The Barbarian” is not really things to get worked up about.”

It is when the producers are constantly talking about this not being a remake, and being “closer to the original Howard stories” when it… isn’t.

Contacts & hair dye will address those problems, and his skill in martial arts theatrics means he could probably do convincing fight scenes. Of course, there’s the fact that he looks adorable…

Is there a chance of a “Born on the Battlefield” adaption with additional cast as 15 year old Conan?

  • Fayric

I dont think we will see or hear anything about the battle of Venarium in this movie, because that would actually resemble the REH Conan; something the production team try hard not to accomplish.

About the hair and eye color: its such a minor problem, its hardly worth mentioning (I mean, such a minor problem for make-up to fix). The grown up Conan actor also have brown hair and eyes. No problem. Blue eyes and black hair are about the only characteristics of Conan the writers bother to use.

I dont recall howard ever writing a specific tale about venarium , i remember it just being mentioned here and there in his stories on how conan made his bones.I know it was expanded upon in recent comics and perhaps some of the other conan writers, but did howard ever write about the specific event? If there is one , I’d love to know and read it. please consider this though: the martial art style is gonna be important. young or old conan will look silly doing tae kwon do or kung fu , which are very flashy(tkd) and refined(kung fu) . Howard was an avid boxer and grappler right? keep it simple its conan not neo or ong bak.

  • Fayric

Howard did not write a story about Venarium, but as you say, He mention it a few times, as well as other facts about Conans childhood. RE Howard mentioning something about Conan in a story is making it a fact, unless you argue that Conan lied in those passages.
Those few facts has been made into a storyline by darkhorse comics (exellently written by Kurt Busiek) trying to map Conans youth.
However, none of that matters for this movie because the scriptwriters chose to make up their own origin of Conan, thus giving him a new personality and motivation for his adventures. This is what most Howard fans are angry about.

  • Fayric

    Cont.

Howard being a “boxer and a grappler” dont make Conan a boxer and a grappler, contrary to what many REH fans think. It seems likely, however, that this is the style Howard imagined for Conans brawls.

Conan Volume 0 – Born On A Battlefield is simply OUTSTANDING and one of the best books so far from the graphic novel series. I also hope they ditch the american accent (Cimmeria is scotland) and go with the black hair and blue eyes.

  • m

Of course conan wasnt a boxer or a grappler officially per se, but these are old and rooted styles of fighting and would translate better for the character than an eastern martial art which wont work.Plus eastern styles were not that popular in the west during the 30′s. I, personally would have rather they start off conan as a full adult,no mom and dad no cimmeria, and in future movies maybe allude to childhood and that gloomy place conan called home. James Bond never needed a childhood story he was full grown and just ” there”. that to me was the one thing about the dark knight that worked and even the producers had the intention: the joker was just there and needed no origin, it added to the character. This origin stuff is getting real stale to me , anyway.Hope it works for this movie

  • Donald

As far as fighting style goes, I don’t really see Conan doing any spin kicks to the head! He is pretty basic so I have to go with a MMA type fighting style minus the arm bars and stuff! He is more of a,”ground and pound,” type fighter in my opinion!

  • m

I’m inclined to agree . Hey wasnt there a scene inone of the carter and decamp stories ( I could be wrong its been a while, please correct me) where conan sneaks on a ship and snaps a guys neck by punching him ?Again I could be getting my writers mixed up it was 15 yrs ago i was a teen and very stoned when i read this stuff.Just bought the coming of conan about a year or two ago and just finishing that up gonna grab the other ones too.

  • Ian

Conan’s style of fighting is as brutal as the world he lives in.Ive started reading my Conan books from scratch and there is one scene where a guard grabs him from behind and Conan gouges his eye out.And ive never known him to do Kung Fu tap dancing.
    He hits hard and fast.
So maybe they will go with the same theme like in 300 with Leonidas during agoge.I would imagine young Conan to kick, punch, bite and butt.Even throttle if he felt his life is at stake. For as a youth he would be uncontrollable, for he lacks the experience of being in the civilized lands. This only only plays a part when leaving Cimmeria and being forced to think twice when faced with situation out of his depth. And age too.
