Conan actor not chosen yet and screenplay is being rewritten!

Paradox Entertainment sweeped their forums in an attempt to clear out some quotes and links to the October 09 version of the Doppenheimer Conan Movie screenplay. Together with the cleanup, they also posted a statement in which they tell us that a rewrite with “quite a few changes” is currently under way. Most importantly though the rumours of a Conan actor being chosen already, have been debunked.

Jay from Paradox wrote that they are even extending the casting call to the UK, to find the perfect guy for our favourite Cimmerian and there is no actor chosen yet, nor anyone they have as a clear front runner. The search continues in the US and Europe and we will see what comes off it.

Paradox is doing damage control, which is a good thing in my opinion IF it’s not just a cover up, but an honest attempt to rewrite the script to make any Howardian sense.

What you’ve got to be kidding me!?

    Andrew McLaren isn’t Conan?

but…but… the guy and all his friends have been saying he IS; it was even on his Facebook and his website. We all believed him…. he was in “Team America – Frak Yeah!” – giving chocolates out to the Iraqi children after blowing up their homes and killing their parents….How could you lie Andrew? How? What happened to the Marine Code of Honor?

…oh that’s right because you’re the mighty douche.

“CPI strives to make this an action-filled movie in the world of Conan, taking inspiration from the writings of Howard, however, some liberties will have to be taken to reach out to a wider audience.”

That’s potentially okay. If liberties are kept minimal it shouldn’t be a problem. But remember, the LOTR movies didn’t need to take many liberties with Tolkien and they were great successes. Sure, LOTR had a long story arc and a cohesive narrative and plot device (the rings) that enabled three good and lengthy movies.

Our Conan team presumably wants to make at least a trilogy too. So the writers may need to invent an REH worthy plot device that is sustainable for three separate but intertwined movies. This may be what they were trying to do when they came up with that old and worn out revenge story…you know, Conan finally gets the main bad guy at the end of the third movie.

    Anyway, I’m cautiously optimistic.

Expected it a bit, but to be very honest, McLaren was a better one. I am glad to hear that Paradox is really behind the canon and are not making quick shot descisions.

    Great news.
I am ready to forgive any “misunderstandings” of the past.
Even the fact they have not picked an actor yet is great news in a way, since this indicate they dont settle for just any fool with big muscles (and I dont talk about Mclaren, I actually got pretty used to the idea of him playing Conan).
So I guess the facts about this movie equals: something is going to be directed by Nispel, perhaps soon. Back to dreaming of the perfect Conan movie, until proven wrong;)

    “Hobie”
You’re spot on about liberties been taken for the movie. I feel they’ll play it safe and make the film accessable to a wider audience who’ve no experience of REH and think Arnie is where it all started. They’ll want this to do well in order to continue it as a trilogy

Rewrite? I hope they rewrite the frack out of it.

Still not optimistic about it but we’ll just have to wait… Who knows for how long?.. At least I hope it worths the waiting.. :)

    I can´t be optimistic yet!!
EACH new about this movie is always worse than the previous one… at last we have a good one but, actually, i lost my hopes long time ago. I need more information about the new writers and the changes.

    @”Hobie” and “theholygoalie”

Well one of the liberties could be to make it PG-13 to ensure it reaches the widest audience possible :D – can’t get much safer than that – like Conan the Destroyer.

Also its probably possible to make three films about Conan’s epic journey to bring a lost magic Stygian sword he finds (that obviously in the hands of Thoth-Amon would bring hell on Hyboria) to be destroyed in the forge of Mount Crom. Of course you’d have to have the obligatory love triangle in there; latent-homosexual dialogue; a traitorous companion with mental issues who struggles with his corrupted morality, who wants the sword for himself; co-operation and eventually strong friendship between two racial enemies; interspersed with the obligatory epic battles, city seiges, scenic vistas with one or two Cthulian monsters and just maybe just to mix it up a final end boss battle (like in Golden Axe). Oh and a healthy does of racism after all we are talking about REH here.

I…uh….don’t believe *ahem* that’s been done…. before. But seriously I hope they’ve hired script writers who DON’T think low-fantasy is “the mummy series” inbred with “van helsing”. Someone like Terry Gilliam would probably be able to create a unique imaginative script, but I doubt he’d be interested.

    @”Fayric”

“fool with muscles” – actually I thought you hit the nail right on the head there.

*Applause* Just want to send a thank you out to the Paradox/Mellenium people for re-asessing their material and taking the time to think through this process and for listening to fan criticisim. Better this movie take another 10 years to make just make it right. That said, its a start I will reserve wild jubilation until I see a decent REH script adaptation.

    @”Robonius”

I too would love to see an original Conan movie based on the short stories but that just won’t happen as long as the money men poke their noses in so I’ll try (really try) to be optimistic about the end result. No way will it end up being a PG 13 though.

“Doppenheimer” is fanspeak for the screenwriters Thomas Dean Donnelly and Joshua Oppenheimer.

How can an open casting be extended to the UK? Am I naiv to think an open cast is open for anyone who fit the description? No wonder they didnt find a good actor;)
(also: is “UK” hollywood talk for Europe?)

    @Fayric

I think what they meant is that they will also hold castings in the UK. Before a UK actor would need to fly in to the US to go to the casting, now they will setup UK casting offices.

  18. Fayric
    At 10. December 2009 20:03 o'clock

Is the casting actually a live perfomance, then?
I have the impression actors just make a small film-clip of them self (as many actors like to post links for)and send them to the casting crew. Or is that just the initial promotion?
Obviously I have no idea how this works;)

No matter what it sounds like, “Open Casting” still requires an actor to have the representation of a theatrical agent.

Although if you feel you got what it takes, why don’t you upload your embarrassing video to Youtube? :)

    Hmmm Youtube videos hey?

Well as they’re doing a rewrite do you think they’ll go for this new Conan concept?:

My clip would be a real treat for you. Even if I got the bright blue eyes and black hair, I´ve spent to much time on geek-lore (in a good old armchair rather than on the gym) to be villing to pose as Conan. My acting abilities is strictly limited to role playing games -the real stuff with actual dice and maps.(well, at least I realise Im no Conan before I post my silly clips on the YT. The lack of self critisism out there is truly horrible/hillarious:)

Glad you enjoyed them! Well can’t say I’m not disappointed Fayric, although no chance I would put a serious audition video either; can’t act for the life of me. Though kudos for the comedians. I have to say though most of the serious auditions seem to think Conan begins and ends with Arnie.

Personally I have a dreadful image the new film might turn out like this Barbarian movie: seriously I’ve watched this and there is a point where the barbarian is arm wrestling with this other guy with a snake on the table – sound familiar Doppenheimer.
