Andrew McLaren rumoured to play Conan

We have been waiting a bit for an official answer on this rumour, but since we get the word from several angles that this might actually be true, we did not want to hold it from you any longer. It is rumoured that an actor for the role of the new Conan in the Conan Movie has finally been found: Andrew McLaren. (seriously good background music on that page ;) )

He is a real tough guy and former military and it is rumoured he blew everyone away at the casting and won the job. Some who know him said he is already heavy at work with training to get into the right shape and reading up on REH’s yarns, to learn more about the character.

It remains to be seen if this rumour turns out to be true or if it is just another wishful thinking attempt of an actor that was part of the Open Casting Call for the Conan Movie. We will of course keep our eyes peeled on any official answer on this rumour and inform you in the instant we have an official word on it.

    I hope he can act. I suppose it could be worse, and if he blew away the competition, it could probably be alot worse.
    In my oppinion he look to modern where Conan should be more timeless(how is that for a concrete complaint:)
    If he can act I say its a good cast, but I get suspicious to this rumour since Mclaren tried to spread this rumour himself on the IMDB board (twice).
    And not that it matters, but I cant stand a web page that blurts out music when I try to get some information, no matter how great song it is. Its just bad manners;)

    Could someone please photo shop a square mane of black hair to that photo of his? If we see prince Valiant its a bad cast, if we see a fearsome barbarian, its a good cast;)

    Since we know about the casting directions for this Conan we really cant refer to how McLaren live up to a “true” Conan, but rather if he lives up to the Conan they want for the part.
    Apparantly he will be a brooding nice guy tormented by his past and trapped in a selfconsuming revenge (until he gets a pretty girl). They most likely want a hunky underwear model, because the Conan of this movie is just as onesided and unimaginative as that. Paradox has clearly showed they are playing it safe and making a standard action movie for the zombie audience looking for a fishtank movie.

    The bottom line is this if the script sucks the movie will suck no matter who plays the lead. Now for Mr. McLaren I think he has a good look and biography to pull it off. Ultimately the movie business is about making money for the investors and producers so they know if Conan is played by a “sexy” guy it’s going to sell tickets especially with women. Atleast they chose a legitimate tough guy with military and fighting experience and not just a regular run of the mill pretty boy actor type. Looking at who he was competing against I think he’s the best choice, and the media is going to eat this up that John McCain’s bodyguard and former U.S Marine Andrew McLaren was plucked from obscurity and is now playing Conan. Everybody loves a good back story. Atleast they didn’t waste 20 million of the budget on Brad Pitt.

    Drasko Andjic had favorable impressions after casting … he said that producers seems very interesting as it is from the Serbian land in the mountainous Balkans, and that especially had excellent feedback about his acting and a powerful transformation that has left them breathless

    Tattoos can be taken out very easily these days, with one click of a computer. I think he’s the perfect guy for the job. Sylvester Stallone and The Rock are also covered in Tattoos as are many others.

    People need to stop being so pessimistic about the Director, script, and cast. I think that the film has a lot of potential to be way better than many are expecting it to be. It seems that the Arnold (Nillius) bodybuilding fans and the R.E.H fans could find some common ground in Millenium’s casting choice. Personally speaking from a 27 year old females perspective I think Andrew is SMOKIN HOT!!! I am a huge fan of Conan as I am a proud self professed Comic Con geek. I was frustrated with some of Marcus Nispel’s earlier ignorance about the stories and vision of R.E.H. However I like him way more than Ratner. I was thinking does anybody actually care about storylines anymore or will this be another “Transformers” another 100 million dollar travesty to my child hood? However I think that Andrew is a great choice for Conan initially I thought o.k they casted some former Calvin Klein model turned B-List actor I never heard of. I was intrigued as to what made this guy stand out from hundreds of thousands of actors so I did my homework and I rented Battle for Haditha a movie I have actually walked past many times in Blockbuster. I thought McLlaren did a phenomenal job in that movie, and could now understand why he got Conan. In Battle for Haditha Andrew played the brave leader of hundreds of U.S Marines in fierce battle in Iraq. His character Capt. Sampson was a natural born leader and a hero with a tough guy swagger, sound familar- (modern day Conan). Now I could be wrong and only time will tell but going with my gut I say he’s a winner!

    I am a big fan of Andrew and respect him whole heartedly. We acted in a short film together and I can honestly say that he is the most talented and nicest actors I have ever worked with. I loved his show (Weaponizers) on The Discovery Channel, it was the sickest show on t.v. He’s also playing a white supremicist in a new movie called “Duress”. The facts are his Mother is a beautiful Doctor from Northern Italy (Milan) born in the United States, she is almost 55 but looks like Demi Moore. His father is American and a Vietnam Vet. of 6 th generation Irish and and Scottish decent and looks like a well built Sean Connery. I met them at the wrap party. Andrew does not look Arabic at all in person and in my opinion he looks European in all his pics as well. He has a buzz cut in the featured pictures because thats what producers wanted him to have for a movie and on his show. I have already notified all of my buddies who know Andrew and we will not allow such a good dude and his family to be lied about in the media. I support the Conan movie and know that Drew is gonna kill it!

    Everybody said that these guys were crazy when they cast Stalone in Ramboo… A few million dollars later, they dont look so crazy after all! I think these guys know what they’re doing! Im sure Andrew is going to do a great job, because if he doesn’t, this is his first major role in a huge movie, his career would pretty much be over.. If he was a well known actor it would be nothing, just move on to the next film, but the kid is hungry…his career rides on this!

    By the way..i checked out what he wrote on IMDB and all he said was that he was in the top of the pickings for the part..i didnt see anywhere that he himself said he got the part.. aside from that, this is gonna be exciting…can’t wait to see it!!!

    I heard Governor Schwarzneggar is going to find his original steroid needles he used on Conan in 82′ and autograph them for Andrew. They’re both Arabs and have no business playing Conan. Personally I’d like to see this movie scrapped I think Marcus Nispel is a moron and wouldn’t know a good screenplay if it smacked him in the tush. I’d rather watch paint dry than this stupid movie. And no I didn’t try out for this film.

    The actor that plays the part has got to reflect Conan’s nature. Conan is the antithesis to civilization. This guy screams L.A.

    I’d like to seem someone with the gravitas of Viggo Mortensen, who not only had that natural fierceness in Lord of the Rings, but in practically everything he does. Mortensen has a special quality and, while I’m not saying he should play Conan, the producers would be well advised to find someone with a similar strength in character.

    Mclaren might be good for garage-based reality shows, but not Conan.

    The difference with Heath Ledger playing the Joker is that Ledger was a proven actor who had just been nominated for an Academy Award. Of course some fans were skeptical, but others were intrigued. Ledger had proven his acting chops, he was well known. This guy is just a reality show host. The difference between the two is massive.

    The difference is actually nothing but time…Ledger started out doing very small things..like commercials in Australia..everyone starts somewhere…then finally Ledger got his big break as we all saw.. McLaren actually starred in an award winning film called Battle for Haditha…pretty impressive flick..if I say so myself.. Everyone has to start somewhere, how are actors supposed to build credits and gain experience. Without the opportunity being given we are stuck with the same old faces..in with change people!! I’m all for new faces on the big screen.. The people behind the making of Conan have expressed the want for a new face..someone with less experience..I congratulate them for giving someone new a try.. we need more folks like them..Dont get me wrong I think Pitt and Depp are great..but you gotta admit its a bit tiresome seeing there face everywhere already…Anyways good luck Andrew McLaren..show em what you got!

    From doing my reading I think Andrew might have had more acting credits if he wasn’t fighting Al Quaeda for 6 years. Also from reading the comments I think Ledger wouldve made a great Conan. If The Rock can pull off a gay guy in Be Cool, I’m pretty sure that this guy can find it in him to play Conan. From what I know there were a lot of candidates out for the role..he must have stood out and have some acting chops if he was the one chosen.

    Im not sure McLaren look arab, but I know Conan is deeply tanned and have black hair. Exept for the blue eyes, I think a Conan actor would do well with a darker complexion.

    The problem is not Mclarens look. We want an actor, not just someone who look the part (and that should disqualify Drasko, permanently). If Mclaren is able to act this part out (and I dont see why not), I say: give the man a wig.

    The story is still quite rotten. And I dont expect much of this movie anymore. Hopefully Mclare (if he actually gets the part) make it worth someting.

    I just don’t know what to think about this. Well, McLaren is the best choice (resp. rumour) I have heard of so far, but…he does look Arabian in my opinion, no offence intended. And his lips look too, well, sensuous.     I wish they would look for a great actor and not just someone with big biceps. Too many of actors trying out for this part, and a lot of the fans, seem to think this is a remake of “Pumping Iron.”
    This should not be a body builder movie, but a great fantasy epic about thieves and treasure hunters, pirates and haunted kingdoms.

I think Andrew and Stallone are great actors and don’t see why he or anyone else with a muscular body should be discriminated against.     To those on here who claim to be homies of Andrews and are defending and setting the record straight on his race etc…uh according to his BIO on his website he is an Orphan so the fact that his Mom is Italian and his Dad is Irish or whatever is sorta moot if they are his adoptive parents. He is a good looking guy who can probably whup many if not all here (this is line was added as I know one of the above guys will note Andrew could kick my ass six different ways:)He just doesnt look like Conan. Rather he is Italian, Mexican, Arabic or Polish he simply has a ethnic look that me and many others dont picture Conan as.     I’ve just returned from the world power lifting champs in Bournemouth South England where I was an official. If He’s repping 450 (over 200kg) on the bench at less than 90 kg body weight he should have been there winning trophies. Perhaps that’s his true vocation in life.

    I’m not saying the actor playing the part should not look the part. Obviously the guy who plays Conan should look like Conan and he should be ripped.
    What I’m saying is that it should be an actor, first and foremost. Brad Pitt is an actor, not a body builder. I just see a lot of fans and wanna-be actors on these sites sounding as if the main criteria for playing Conan is the size of their biceps or triceps and how much weight they can rep on a flat bench and a decline bench and an incline bench.
    I personally don’t care how many reps a guy can do with a dumbbell behind his head with regards to playing Conan. But a lot of people on these boards do, which leads me to think that many see a Conan film as a “body builder movie,” something akin to “Pumping Iron,” but that should not be the case.
    Obviously having had Arnold Schwarzenegger in the original made Conan into something of a body builder icon. The producers announce that they were doing a “remake” of the Schwarzenegger movie and many of the guys trying out for the part don’t see Conan per se, they see Scwarzenegger, and they hope to be the next Schwarzenegger, not necessarily the next Conan. I just hope Nispel and the producers don’t see things the same way.

    Rufus- he is 192 pounds putting up mover 500 pounds on flat bench and decline bench. No bullshit necessary. He makes wat more money as an actor than as a power lifter or a professional fighter both professions he could be excellent at. He loves acting but he is extremely powerful.     I live in England and Battle for Haditha was a really popular movie over here. It was on t.v everyday for a month on Film 4 if you haven’t scene it go rent it. Alot of people in the U.K are huge fans of Andrew. I know a lot of woman in the U.K are very excited that he got Conan. I wouldn’t even bother to see it if he wasn’t the star.

He is currently training very hard mentally and physically for the role. He beat out all of the competetion so I’m sure he is extremely talented. He’s not just some meathead he’s very intelligent, if you here the way he has been conducting himself in interviews I’m sure true fans of Robert E. Howard would be very excited.

    I would prefer someone whom has actually lived as a warrior to play as a warrior. And the only actor proposed that has had ANY experience in this regard is Andrew Mclaren. There is no mention of any “warrior” experience (military, army, etc) from any of the noted actors that are proposed to play as Conan. I guarantee that Mclaren’s real world experience will transgress better than any other suggested actor.

    It is ironic that Andrew McLaren is “reading up on REH’s yarns” when the Donnelly/Oppenheimer screenplay for Conan (2011) butchers Robert E. Howard’s character. I hope McLaren gets the job since this 2011 film is already a big middle finger to Howard’s legacy. One could argue this film deviates more from Howard’s character than Milius’ 1982 film.

    Great job, Andrew! You might get the lead role in a film that Conan fans will hate as much as they did the TV show with Ralf Moeller. Pfffffft.

    I too know the guy, and am pleased he’s got this oportunity for a role in a big movie he’s a great family man. I am also a staunch Conan fan and although I think he’s got a lot to offer for a Conan Film he is very short for the lead character (I’m 5’11 and he’s shorter than me), perhaps a side kick or villain would be more appropriate. I hope he’s got a role but I doubt it’s the lead.

    If you’re questioning Andrew’s height check out the ‘family’ photos on his web site and the one with him kissing his lovely wife clearly shows how tall he is. unless she’s about 6’4″ which for all we know she may be, he most likely isnt close to 6′. But that said, they could always do the Alan Ladd style filming and dig ditches for all the other actors playing opposite him, a bloody big ditch for Dulph!

    Whoever gets the job, be it Mr. McLaren or Mr. Telfer (afaik Mr. Andijc is not even in the running aka hasn’t shown up for casting yet), I am sure they will do their absolute best to bring Conan to life, because both of their careers could profit from the main role in a blockbuster movie.

    It’s nice to see both sides have an avid fanbase that tries to support them all over the web, but there is one important thing for you guys:

    Hollywood producers don’t read blogs or Facebook (maybe they notice that Vin Diesel has 7 Million followers, because that’s a real number that they can utilize in a marketing way)!

    Don’t kill yourself over who gets the job or who doesn’t in the end we are just puppies watching the big boys play and have no say in the opinion.

    Stay cool and calm and offer tolerance to each sides and may the best actor/guy for the job win!

    Thanks for the link. I won’t comment about Andrew McLaren, because too me he doesn’t look like Conan, but like I said before, after what Heath Ledger did, I think anything is possible. But I must say something about what I saw on that Aaron Pyphers casting video.

    If that pieces of dialogue are really from the script, I have to say that I think it looks good. I specially liked that whole “Clean hands means nothing!” part, its at least something worthy of REH. I remember reading an interview somewhere where the writers were saying that Conan speaks a lot in this script, which I think is good, specially after seeing this. Maybe theres still some hope about this movie, who knows? The “strong and silence” type may have worked for CONAN THE BARBARIAN, but it was only in the few longer dialogue parts that we could see the REAL Conan there, like when he prays to Crom in the end, or the deleted “Ahab speach” right before that, when he talks to Subotai about his hard life and childhood. Conan is much more than a brute with a sword, hes a natural leader, an inteligent and resourceful warrior, a great strategist with a strong presence, not only physical, but also for what he says and does. Of course this becomes more evident in his later years as a king, but he always showed such qualities since the beginning, so even as an origin movie, this first one must portray him somewhat like that already. So I hope that the writers (or the rewriters, now) had that in mind when they wrote that script.

    Comparing Andrew McLaren to Heath Ledger is like comparing the Mona Lisa to a four year old’s stick man crayon drawing. Ledger was a decent actor with numerous films under his belt before his seminal role as The Joker and he actually had thespian talent.

    As “Suspect” rightly says McLaren is a thug who finds nothing better than intimidate any critics or disagreement usually by mentioning how much of a patriot he is and therefore you can’t criticize him – rather similar to what Bush said about critics of the War – and we all know how that turned out. Other methods include so-called “friends” rushing to his defence with ad-hominem attacks on the critic; with words such as loser; jealous; unpatriotic and my favourite: “try to be a positive person”. You know what if you want to be “rich and famous”; like Andrew desperately wants to be, then expect people to express their opinions but take it in the ass like a man, when its not what you want to hear.

    I rather suspect he took down his arrogant imdb post about landing the role of Conan because simply he now knows he hasn’t, maybe he got a bit part as a Stygian eunuch.

    I’m sure Blackwater will be happy to have this guy back. If not, maybe he can land a guard job with Haliburton.
    As for Telfer, he might have the looks, but I don’t think he has a chance. I’m sure they’ll find a completely new face, one without any baggage.
    This might sound crazy to some, but I think with today’s leading man aesthetic, big muscular dudes will have a hard time. You don’t need to weigh 220 lbs and be built like a brick wall to play Conan. Look at the guy who’s playing John Carter of Mars. Look at the “Twilight” kid who just got signed for “Max Steel.” The Australian kid on “Legend of the Seeker” is ripped and looks terrific on screen — and he probably weighs less than 150 lbs.
    You could be 5’8 and weigh 150 lbs and still look badass on the big screen.
    Meryl Streep is onl 5’6″ but just played Julia Child, who was a big woman at 6’2″. Using camera angles, set design and costume tricks, the film made Streep look huge.
    And Elijah Wood really wasn’t 3 ft-tall either.
    The problem with big beefy muscle guys is that they look too big, too beefy, too slow, and, in all honesty, not attractive to the masses. Body builders are really only attractive to other body builders.
