Conan gets the 300 Makeup/FX studio treatment

According to mania.com Conan will be masterfully painted (painted abs anyone?) from the same guys, that made the muscles roll in 300. Shaun Smith will be one of the monster/creature designers for Conan, while Scott Wheeler will be the Lead Makeup Artist. As reported by mania.com Smith is very excited to be on board.

Let’s hope those two talented guys will not be inventing four armed archers, nor blind ones. I think they did a very good job on 300 and therefore at least in this departement, quality was hired.

I actually think this is a good thing.

There was something cool, ancient and evil about 300. While watching it, it made me think…damn if they did Conan like this it would be cool. Also the new Spartacus for STARZ looks similar.

I think that would be a dumb move,
    300 was great, but Conan?
might as well just make a animated Conan movie if that how there going to do it, its about the same thing.

    @ tyrus
They have been at the animated production of “Red nails” for years, starring ron pearlman as the voice of Conan. Even if that project has ben slow going for years, its now our best hope of a decent Conan movie:( [or :) ]

Yea I know about Red Nails,
just saying if they do the movie with the 300 guys they dont over do it with the CGI.
300 was one of a kind, dont need a 300 Conan.

    I agree.
Still, its good they get professional help. If this movie looks ok, and the (re)writers work a miracle with the script, this movie could be ok, if not a good Conan story.

The FX people won’t be able to save this, I am afraid. Lipstick on a mule, if you know what I mean.

Thats good news, but I wouldn’t like to see it made exactly like 300, this is a production that would benefit from real locations instead. I mean, 300 was good, but I couldn’t help feeling like I was watching a stage play instead of a movie… It specifically worked for the visual style they went for, but that should not dictate that every other fantasy movie must also be made like that. Its OK to use the green screen here and there (check what Leterrier made for the new Clash of Titans, and see how BETTER it looks that way), but NOT exclusively, and specially NOT for Conan. Any of his movies must have a sense of realism and depth, we must believe that Hyboria really exists, otherwise it won’t work. Take the LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, for instance, everything was so well made and designed, that it looked and felt real, and thats why it turned out so good. And thats exactly what this Conan needs.
