He’s in his 20s to early 30s, Caucasian, powerfully built, broad-shouldered, sun browned skin lined with scars. Piercing blue eyes and square-cut black mane, tall. He is a savage killer that has matured into the refinement his father tried to teach him when he was young. Conan is very smart, almost inhumanly strong, and very cunning. His entire life, from the moment of his birth, has been shaped by violence. Being the last of his tribe and having to watch his father die a cruel death, he is determined avenge his peoples’ slaughter by killing all those who led the attack on the Cimmerians, including the all-powerful Khalar Singh. He is prepared to die in order to accomplish his goal. What Conan did not expect, was to find a reason to live… LEAD

[ TAMARA ]
She is 18 to 24 years old, Caucasian or Middle Eastern, open to all ethnicities; beautiful, studious, correct, a novitiate of a Greek influenced monastery. A master of martial arts, she has been trained to be the Queen’s servant, bodyguard and best friend. She and many other female bodyguards to the queen have been in hiding most of their lives because of the curse of Acheron, which would take the queen’s life to bring almost immortal power to its king. When Khalar Singh, a powerful warlord with ambitions to become the king of Acheron, storms the monastery and captures all of the novitiates, she is separated from Ilira, the one she must protect. With all of her strength and will, Tamara is determined to find and rescue her. She finds herself in league with Conan because of a mutual need to find Khalar Singh. She is not in the least intimidated by Conan’s size or grim demeanor and their alliance eventually blossoms into something that surprises them both… LEAD

[ KHALAR SINGH ]
He’s in his 40s to 50s, Asian or Middle Eastern, Central Asian, Mongol, Turkish, or Persian, open to all ethnicities; commanding in size and manner, a warlord and formidable warrior, brilliant, cruel, weathered and tanned by the many campaigns he has waged and won. He is driven in his quest to find the Queen of Acheron and has been building an empire to do so. His goal is to find the Queen whose blood will bring life to the demonic minions of Acheron while making himself king of this hellish power. With this power, Khalar will protect his legacy against the onslaught of master sorcerer, Thoth-Amon so that his weak son, Fariq may rule after his death. While riding into a Cimmerian village to recruit his old comrade, Corin, his large collection of mercenaries slaughters them to the last soul when Corin refuses to join them. The village’s only survivor was young Conan. When Khalar’s search has finally narrowed to the likely discovery of the queen at a monastery of female monks, he also learns Conan is older and hungry for revenge… LEAD

[ CORIN ]
He’s in his 30s to 40s, Caucasian, powerfully built, intelligent, graceful, master swordsman, skilled blacksmith, de facto leader of Cimmerians and Conan’s father. He resolves to answer the terrible request of his dying wife and cuts Conan out of her so she can see him. He then shoulders the burden of raising Conan, which proves to be daunting given the boy’s savage nature. Corin teaches his son the meaning of the sword: a hot blade must be cooled and tempered. When Khalar finally corners him and tortures him to death, he shows no regret nor pain, hiding his concern for his son’s safety from the eyes of the enemy. SUPPORTING

[ FARIQ ]
He’s in his 20s to early 30s, Asian or Middle Eastern, open to all ethnicities, slight of frame, piercing eyes, cruel, determined to prove to his father that he can rule the world when the time comes. But he has the mentality of a proto-goth rocker, so ruling the world will prove elusive. However, Fariq makes up for his lack of battle skills with his deft understanding of sorcery and evil determination to find the real queen of Acheron. SUPPORTING

[ ILIRA ]
She is 18 to 20 years old, Caucasian or Middle Eastern, beautiful, fun-loving, a novitiate of a Greek influenced monastery. She has been hidden away in a monastery since birth since she is the designated queen of Acheron. When Khalar Singh captures her among all of the other novitiates and start the process of killing them to find out which is the real queen, Ilira maintains her courage under unbelievably cruel circumstances. SUPPORTING

[ UKAFA ]
He’s in his 30s-40, very dark-skinned African or African American, massively framed at six-foot-five, gold-toothed, hardened by a lifetime of war, a leader of Kushite Tribemen from the savannahs of Kush. Ukafa is Khalar Singh’s second in command, jealous that Singh’s son, Fariq, will one day be warlord. He obeys his leader but plots the overthrow of his son. He is a mighty warrior and unbeatable in battle—until he comes face to face with Conan. LEAD

[ REMO ]
He’s in his 30s, any ethnicity, thin, feral, misshapen, a mysterious warrior of dark magic who travels by shadow and surprises men with a quick death. He leads a band of tracking Shadow Scouts under Khalar Singh’s employ. He can be immensely fast and devious, his soul as twisted as his body. SUPPORTING

[ FASSIR ]
He’s in his 50s, Middle Eastern, Asian, Caucasian, SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES, strict yet loving, learned and spiritual, an elder monk and leader of the monastery. He’s charged with the care and education of the queen, Ilira. SUPPORTING

[ LUCIUS ]
He’s in his 30s, Caucasian, handsome, proud, haughty, lethal, a leader of a Legion of Aquilonian Mercenaries. While attacking Corin and Conan in close quarters, he is thrown into a fiery forge that disfigures him for life. His self-revulsion twists him to the point that years later he takes great pleasure in torturing prisoners. SUPPORTING

[ ONE-EYED THIEF (ONE-EYED PRISONER) ]
He’s in his 20s to 30s, any ethnicity, wiry, a leader of thieves, who has had the bad luck to fall into Lucius’ grips and is being tortured by him. However, the tables are turned by Conan and this prisoner has his revenge. He later appears at Khor Khala City and offers aide to Conan as a way to pay his debt. SUPPORTING

[ ARTUS ]
He’s in his 30s, tan and swarthy, almost Gypsy-like, handsome, charming, even dashing in a gruff way, a Zamoran pirate and good friend to Conan. They have shared many adventures together and trust each other with their lives. Artus is a master of the high seas with a fast and powerful ship. He shows his mastery in strategy and hand-to-hand combat during a fierce sea battle. SUPPORTING

[ CHEREN ]
He’s in his 30s, any ethnicity, a blind archer with the mystical ability to strike down any enemy with his bow and arrow. He leads a large band of blind archers whose accuracy and cunning lends a powerful presence to Khalar’s army of mercenaries. SUPORTING

[ PICT ]
He’s in his 30s, any ethnicity or dark-complexioned Caucasian (”pict” is Latin for “painted one”) the fourth in the band of Pict Savages. He survives Conan’s onslaught and beings Khalar Singh to where the Cimmerians camp. He is promised the heads of his enemies.

[ YOUNG CONAN ]
Caucasian, tough and wiry, scary violent. At ten, he insists on joining the teenage boys entering their rites into becoming warriors. When four Picts cross his path and kill one of the boys, Conan unleashes a savagery that goes too far for a warrior. His father takes him aside and personally trains him. His father teaches him what makes a good sword but he has still much to learn what makes a good swordsman. When the Cimmerians are attacked by Khalar Singh and his mercenaries, Conan is the only survivor, the last of the Cimmerians. SUPPORTING

[ ISLENE ]
She’s in her 20s, Caucasian, beautiful, courageous, Amazonian built, pregnant with her son, Conan. She is stabbed through the belly by an Aesir Raider. Her dying request to her husband, Corin, is to take the baby from her womb before she dies so that she can see him…

[ YOUNG FARIQ ]
He’s ten years old, Asian or Middle Eastern, submit all ethnicities, Khalar Singh’s son, a sociopath in the making, one who has no qualms killing a wounded man with his own sword.

[ MARAUDER ]
He’s in his 30s to 40s, Caucasian, massively built and brutal, a stone cold killer that takes relish in the killing of the pregnant Islene. His shield bears the emblem of Thoth-Amon. However, his arrogance is his downfall as she, in turn, kills him.

[ YOUNG ARTUS ]
He’s 15 to 16 years old, Caucasian, Cimmerian, a tall muscular kid embarking on the initiation rite to become a warrior. He mocks the smaller Conan much to his regret. While on the trail, he tries to convince Conan to flee after wandering off the path into a dark pass littered with corpses hanging from trees. Young Conan saves him from the Khalar’s raid on Cimmeria. When given a chance to fight for his homeland, Artus flees to save himself.

[ THREE PICT SAVAGES ]
In their late teens, early 20s, SUBMIT ALL ETHNICITIES, large, brutish, bearded, and wild. They are on a hunting party and come across some teenage Cimmerians—heads to add to their collections. What they didn’t count on was the savagery of young Conan.

[ NARRATOR ]
A storyteller’s voice of old, VOICEOVER ONLY

Now it’s officially confirmed. The new Conan will be the old Conan revenge plot drapped in a more modern shining linnen. It seems REH fans will have to put their hopes in the second coming of Solomon Kane, to get a more faithful adaption of a Howard character. It’s really sad that Paradox had kept us hoping for so long that the new Conan Movie would not be a remake, but all the ingredients of the old movie are there… again… again not Howard, not in the least.

I think this info rules out Jared anyway, as 15th of Feb is way to early for him since Supernatural won’t finish filming until end of March or mid April.

I agree with JPadfan, this open casting call for Conan casts severe doubt on the prospects for Jared Padalecki as Conan.

As a Conan fan, I am glad they are having an open casting call to find the best man for the job, whoever that ends up being.

As a Robert E. Howard’s Conan fan, I do have some issues with some of the things in the leaked Donnely/Oppenheimer script that are confirmed here.

Most notably, where the HELL is the underlying theme of barbarism vs civilisation? All I see is a godamm revenge story, something which has very little to do in a Conan origin story. Conan should leave Cimmeria because he has a wandering and adventourous spirit, not to avenge his people who should be alive and well in the first place.

Why the is Conan so cruel that it worries the Cimmerians? He is the noble savage dammit, not some borderline pysko hick. These are damn near dealbreakers. Good thing though that it is implied that Corin manages to teach Conan the way of a good warrior, even if he should keep anything even remotly resembling a fkn riddle of steel the hell away from any teachings.

Beyond that, I don’t mind the Khalar Singh/Acheron conquest plot.
I rather like the reference to Toth-Amon aswell.

So I am still anticipating this, but nearly as much as I did prior to reading this. I don’t see why the good goys at Paradox din’t throw this in the bin and went with the competing Blackman/McCain script, which surely must have been better than this.

Here’s to hoping the movie will end end with Conan as the Conan we know and love, and the Blackman scripted sequel (if made) will be more to our liking.

As i said repeatedly… a boy who looses his mother at birth and his whole tribe at the age of 14-15 CANNOT become Conan. He will be deeply troubled, confused and lost for the rest of his life. We are always the result of our past and a writer that says “Oh hell yeah, the dude that basically lost EVERYTHING a human cares about in life is totally going to be the joyous, boasting, drinking, live celebrating Conan REH wrote about” is logical, has no brain, no knowledge of human psychology, no writing skills.

I am so utterly and deeply dissapointed right now and really angry at Paradox for letting this happen.

    Yes, this is bad.
The good thing is it seems to be pretty gory and gritty in a “hard facts of life” way. However, nothing in the story (as we can make of the character outlines)indicates this will do RE Howard justice.
As Howard wrote little about Conans youth its not hard to get it right, still this script fail. The dark horse comic “Born on the battlefield” should be a good guide to the youth part of this movie.

That is what puzzles me the most – the current Dark Horse Conan series does a fantastic job chronicling the adventures of Conan, all the while remaing very true to REH.
Why the hell can’t the movie simly adapt the current comic???

That would probably be easier on the writers since there are pictures, and better for us since the basic story and themes are still the same. There is almost no way they could go wrong with that approach.

Instead, we are stuck with Conan reminagined by two hack writers who probably didn’t real let alone understand REH in the first place.

I am glad to see so many my fellow Serbs on this blog.
It seems that Draško launched a serious campaign.
I saw him two weeks ago on the bus station.
He is a big fan of Conan,I know he had plans to publish new Conan comic books in Serbia.
Anyway, with open cast call he still has a chance to be chosen for some other role in the movie, maybe for some Cimmerian warrior.

What a great cast of characters! Then they can save the whales from extinction and live happily forever!

Wait. This is supposed to be a Conan film. As written by Robert E. Howard. I am not seeing his characters, stories or themes. Even Milius did better than this.

    Say adios to REH.

All the ingredients of the old movie are here again?

Where is Ron Cobb, where’s William Stout, designing the world for 2 years on pre-production?

Where is the Riddle of Steel, based on Nietzsche’s Zaratustra sub-theme? What is that crap of “a hot blade must be cooled”?? That’s all the deepness this piece of shit is going to have?

    Where is Basil Poledouris?

Where is Max Von Sydow, where is Mako? Where are SECONDARY CHARISMATIC AND GOOD characters and actors here?

Where are the natural landscapes, is there going to be ANY real set, actually?

Where is the realistic japanese KENDO style of fighting, instead of the vomitive unrealistic “not sure what style is this but looks chinese or something” style of fighting digitally retouched ala Matrix?

Where is THE SEX AND THE BOOBS????

Where is Jody Samson making REAL swords, with awesome designs of Ron Cobb?

Where is a director who actually KNOWS SOMETHING about ancient history and KNOWS what a MONGOL is???

    I can go on.

Why the producers chose this approach for the new Conan? One and only reason … profit … how many people in America and the world knows the original created kind of Conan by Robert E. Howard? I’ll tell you very little … .. . what the majority knows is Conan played by Arnold Schwarzenegger and directed by John Milius … and such a crowd expected to be good fun in the cinema watching a film that will resemble little of the old version .. money running the world!

    @tyrus
I agree with the “crap!”, but this sounds nothing like pathfinder. Pathfinder is by far the most original remake in years;)

Anyway: the character I actualy look forward to se is the blind archer leading a BAND of blind archers. I dont know if its just stupid or great.
If this production is to be saved they wil have to get some realy great actors to lift those outlined characters. But as my trust has recently been shattered I suppose they will recruit bodybuilders an sci-fi channel rejects.

This has to be a wind up! unless it’s in the style of monty pythons ‘Holy Gail’, Blind Archers, very funny. Cast another dianabol popping Blond Bodybuilder who lookes nothing like an ancient Geal (Cimmerian) and it could be one of those stupid rip off comedies like Scary Movie, but it cant be taken seriuosly as an epic to compare with Gladiator, Troy or even 300! change the bloody script before February for Crom’s sake!

    kind of a let down…

I could care less about the casting. I care more about where the casting choices look like their leading the story.

Dark Horse did an awesome job with the comics. I remember interviewing Scott Allie about it who was making sure everything remained faithful to Howard. It was great.

How did the movie concept turn into something so different from Howard’s work? I just don’t get it.

I am really tired of the Jared fans who’ve posted here saying they don’t want Jared to play a “non-attractive muscle-bound giant.” The Conan stories are in public domain, and easily accessible from wikisource or Project Gutenberg Australia. Why not read a few, and then comment on what Conan is?

Drasco looks the part, but I’m afraid he likes REH too much to appear in this film. They’d never hire an actor who might actually know about the character in any capacity.

  31. Thomas
    At 30. October 2009 13:29 o'clock

Well unless by some miracle it turns out this casting call leak is a fake/hoax/untrue I pretty much give up on this movie right here and now. The whole thing sounds like a shallow money grab by a studio and director who care nothing about creating a good movie based on the deeply immersive and exiting world REH created. Total bullshit. Maybe in another 30 years some one else will give it a shot and get it right. It seems hollywood has become incapable of producing good movies, or perhaps its audiences now days that dont hold movie makers to a hight standard. Anyways im totally disgusted…

  32. Thomas
    At 30. October 2009 13:38 o'clock

Also I just have to add as an after thought the whole concept and Idea of the character Tamara is a big steaming load. A female lead who is a master of martial arts… oooo havent seen that crap a million times, cue the shitty cgi crouching tiger bullet time. Female characters in conan stories are rarley combatants, they are demure voluptous beauties that need conans strength to get them through. For his part Conan knows how to hadle women also, the whole falling in love bs makes me sick.

    At 30. October 2009 17:06 o'clock

I read thru this again this morning. Here is what I take away from the story:

Gladiator: 2000 Release – Plot with Kalar Singh and Fariq = Plot between Marcus Aeralius and Joaquin Phoenix playing the weak son.

Tamara: Any one of a million movies with girls and martial arts. I think of The Last Legion being the most recent, which actually wasn’t too chessy, but still amazingly cheesy.

Conan, Corin, Islene : See Conan 1982 opening ten minutes. Come on…be original!

Ukafa: See Conan: The Destoryer 1984 Wilt Chamberlin!!!

Blind Archers and Shadow Scouts: A pathetic attempt to but some Fantasy into the movie…again we see the trainwreck coming.

I never thought I’d say this…but..I doubt I’ll see this in the theaters. A sad day for all, seriously…I really hope this casting list is bullshit.

  35. Fayric
    At 30. October 2009 22:06 o'clock

Well, the concept of a fighting woman is not unheard of in the Conan stories, and he even falls in love with the pirate queen of the black coast, still this way of adding a female fighter seems unoriginal and silly, just like in The last Legion (as pointed out above)when they try to shock the audience with a concept already worn out in dozens of movies (however, I still find it better than the weak swooning ladies usually appearing in the original Conan, and most likely represented here by Ilira).
I wouldnt mind if Tamara was as badass as Gaia in Rome, but I think she will be more like a pretty doll fighting with two small blades and freezing in silly poses. As awkward and slow in her movability as the bodybuilder they get to play Conan.
By crom I dont like this movie.

  36. Ethan Edwards
    At 31. October 2009 04:33 o'clock

Well, do you guys remember what the producers of this pieceofshit said when promoting it?

They said: WE ARE GOING TO BE FAITHFUL TO HOWARD.

And after that, they even said: WAY MORE FAITHFUL THAN THAT BAD MOVIE OF JOHN MILIUS!

Then… Lord… then they rip-off Milius and absolutely IGNORE Howard!!!!!

So… in any case, in any house, in any band, no matter if Howard fan, Milius fan, both fan, or whatever, this people doing this movie are PEOPLE TO BE HATED. Not only for liars. But for liars, burglars, cockies and morons.

THEY INSULTED THEIR AUDIENCE!!!!!!!!! God damn their asses with cancer.

  37. Ethan Edwards
    At 31. October 2009 04:41 o'clock

You know what’s worse of all this?

There’s no sign of LOVE in any of the pieces we are been shown from this vomitive project. No sign.

And fans of Conan or Howard, are actually fans who are mainly moved BY LOVE, a rabious irrational passionate LOVE for the character, his biography, his world, and his creator.

Where’s the RESPECT to that inmense love in this PIECEOFSHIT??? Are you going to tell me these guys who desgined a bunch of characters taken out from a bad D&D game actually share the SAME LOVE for REh’s works than the fans that are waiting for the movie? Are you going to tell me these assholes have read JUST ONE tale of Reh, when they actually claim they are faithful to him and THE ONLY HOWARDIAN CHARACTER IN THE WHOLE SCRIPT IS CONAN????????

There’s NO SIGN OF LOVE, but there’s tons of signs of “we don’t give a shit” here.

Well, you son of bitches, I just don’t give a shit about you, either. Honestly.

Bullshit.Paradox entertainment are bunch of gredy faced lying corporate whores. They dont give two tosses over faithful adaptions or any nonsense that stands in the way of making a fast buck. This will be an absolute terrible film that all true Conan and Robert E. Howard fans would do well to boycott. No one else with an iq over 25 will pay to see this piece of moving wallpaper drivel and hopefully they’ll go bankrupt.By Crom bring back John Milius and Arnie and get Crown of Iron made-NOW!OR TO HELL WITH YOU!!

Take a look at that list of producers and executive producers! The sheer amount of people involved shows a totally apathetic business approach. This is seriosly wrong.Theirs no one with any interest in Howard’s work or even making a good movie.Look at the Solomon Kane trailer and thats more or less what Conan will be.Strangely I wager the Red Sonja movie will be the best of the bunch if only for Robert Rodriguez imput.Paradox entertainment?Read bargain basement.Crap director,t.v. actors and special effects knocked up on a laptop during lunch break.Avoid.

Acheron?!Crom’s teeth!Acheron was a forgotten evil realm vanished to dust thousands of years before Conan’s birth. Why all the glaringly bad inaccuries as well as an insultingly shite storyline?Whats all this being ripped from the womb and dangled before his dying mothers eyes stuff?Blind archers?Where are the dwarves?Surely theres room for them too.

It is true that you are going to close this blog? I´m agree that maybe it´s the best idea because this piece of crap don´t deserve any support… but, man, you put so much effort in the site…

Amen to the whole Acheron bit Steve! I was thinking exactly the same thing, this whole movie is just bits and pieces of Conan and fantasy lore with a sprinkling of money making formula that got shoveled into filmakers mouths and the steaming load they dropped out the other end will be the movie.

I think closing the blog would be a bit of a loss, as a community of fans, we can still make the effort to get this changed or stopped. I atleast feel personally obligated to do something to stop REH’s name and all his creative work from being dragged through the mud again. Maybe the fact that every response in this thread has been negative will get someones attention. Its still early days….. IF YOUR OUT THERE STOP THIS MOVIE!!! DONT DO IT!

I think that if we can get more information about the British production, to give them more publicity, since they seem to be the only ones who care about the fan perspective.

Having just read the synopsis i cant help but note this is just a rehash of BOTH the original movies.Another Dino De Horrendous production made by a bunch of office execs who have even less of a clue how to make a movie than he did.The writing was on the wall when they hired that Pathfinder bloke to direct which is already one big homage to Conan the barbarian if not a bona fide remake in itself.Bet he was cheap too.Bryan Singer(another awful choice anyhow)probably was out of Conan mcfranchises price range.Im still angry at this shit after waiting since 1984 for a descent Conan production.Tossers.

I totally LOVE the idea of Jason Momoa as Conan! I have been a Conan fan since…way…back, when graphic novels were called “comic books”. Now my kids have taken up the mantle, and we are all pumped about this! As long as they stay true to the Robert E. Howard vision of WHO Conan is. Not the mess they made with the last unmentionable Conan movies (though I enjoyed them anyway-even a sip of water is heaven to a man in the desert…) Cant wait…Just follow the books, man, it’s all there!
