Howard McCain states that there are two Conan movies in the making!

In an article published by a french cinema portal Howard McCain talks about his involvement in the project, the status, the director and that from his knowledge the Conan producers are thinking about doing two separate Conan movies that are not connected. One would be based on McCain and Blackman’s script and the other on Donelly’s and Oppenheimer’s script.

He also states that Bret Rattner is attached to the project, but he hasn’t come to terms and the last pieces are not tied yet, though without openly stating it, he does not like Rattner to be attached to it by hinting at what the fans on the Internet have been saying is pretty much what he thinks too…

Then he shortly jumps to describing the direction of his own script as a more mature, dark and gritty approach than Milius was doing. No humour, just brutal Conan in its full glory. The main inspiration for his version of the script is coming from the two REH short stories: A Witch Shall Be Born of the People and Black Circle.

These are very strange news and i bet that many people reading this right now are confused on to what Paradox and Millenium are really up too. How can they possibly make two Conan movies, not connected? Was this just a misunderstanding of the interviewer and McCain? So many questions and so few answers from any official source.

UPDATE: Thanks to an explanation of a commenter there arose another possibility. The movies will be done “one after the other”. That sounds like what happened in the 80′ s. Two movies who are not related in style or character. Let’s hope that does not turn out to be the case, as this would kill the franchise yet again as it did back then. Additionally in another french interview he spoke of whos script would be picked first, so i guess this is all some kind of lost in translation problem.

The main problem though remains: We have a mediocre script by Donelly/Oppenheimer revealed, a secret script by Blackman/McCain – who have shown great interest and knowledge in Conan and talent in their latest screenplay efforts – and the rumours around a not so much loved Director called Bret Rattner. We will see how this turns out and if Conan ever comes to live at all and if he does, in what state. Exciting times!

    Maybe something was lost in translation. I can’t picture a writer who can go much darker than Milius. They need some one to come in to straighten this shit out. Forget about Ratner and pick the better script already. The one that is in line with REH’s works.

    That’s correct but not sure. :-) It’s only a possibility. And “L’un après l’autre” = one after the other. :-)
    And Howard McCain doesn’t mention two movies in this second french interview : http://www.ecranlarge.com/article-details-11452.php However, two scripts seem to be competing.

    For the exact translation of the full article, I will try but can’t promise it for sure. :-(

    Thanks for the second interview, i edited the article accordingly. Still the whole “two movies one after the other” confuses the hell out of me. That sounds like the error they made in the 80′s. Make two movies: One mature audience, a bit deeper in story and the other being 13+ rated, complete comic story, boring. I hope they step away from that and make ONE movie, full power, full money at a time.

    It is April 14th, 2009 as I type this awesome rumor. An alleged source close to the Conan reboot film claims the upcoming Paradox Entertainment/NuImage Conan movie (that wasn’t going to star Arnold) was moving forward up to 3 weeks ago but has now stalled indefinetly. Seems the current climate of doing old franchise’s with the same star(s) of the original and scoring a huge success is what changed Avi Lerner’s mind. Rumored plans are to wait until November 2010 when Arnold will have more freedom to shoot a full length feature film to start filming the long awaited CONAN THE KING.

    I was told producers would like to change the name from KING CONAN to give the project a fresh start so it’s not confused with the old 2001 John Milius version. Supposedly, a new script will be written. Though our own Randy Jennings says the second draft he has read for KING CONAN rivals Schwarzenegger’s own CRUSADE script.

    It makes sense to switch from KING CONAN to CONAN THE KING because it goes with the other two Schwarzenegger movie titles of CONAN THE BARBARIAN & CONAN THE DESTROYER. Now, Conan will be King!

    The best part of the rumor was why Nu/Image now wants Arnold back as Conan. Avi Lerner likes the idea of GHOSTBUSTERS 3 coming together with the same cast and thinks waiting for Schwarzenegger will give him his biggest box-office hit to date. Funny thing about all this is, back in January of 2008, Arnie had ask Lerner at the premiere of RAMBO to wait for his return. Only to have Avi say he can’t!

    The goal is for CONAN THE KING to be released the same year Arnold leaves office because a November 2011 release date was mentioned.

    OK, my thoughts on these rumors, if true, are that funding fell threw and Nu/Image couldn’t muster up 80-100 million dollars for Conan’s budget with no-name lead actors. Rumor has it that Mickey Rourke is being sought to play Conan, but will executives fund a 100 million Mickey Rourke Conan film, knowing he ain’t a box-office powerhouse? Hell no!

    I am told by Harry Knowles of aintitcool.com that Arnie will be working for one day soon on THE EXPENDABLES. Chances are, we will know more once Arnie and Avi meet up on set.
