Who should play Conan in the new movie?

Since we lack news, we can also start some discussions and the most obvious one is “Who should play Conan?”. Here are some hints the producers have given us what and who they search for, so you don’t throw too many Triple H’s and Geralt Butler at us:

  • Has to be an unknown, or actor that has not yet had his first major role in a big movie
  • No bodybuilder
  • No wrestler
  • Must be suting for a young Conan
  • Must be a good actor in the first place

Head over to the comments and throw around your ideas. My personal favorite right now would be Josh Holloway, he plays Sawyer in the TV-series Lost and his character in there is already a good bit similar to a modern day Conan. What do you think?

  • Cowonga

Josh Holloway sounds like a good choice to me too, now that you mention it.

  • Barbarian

I think that maybe Dominic Purcell (the big brother in Prison Break) maybe a good choice too, though he looks very eastern european.

  • Alan Richbourg

Clearly, Daniel Craig, who was James Bond in Quantum Solace.

  • James McKenzie

It is hard to say, my thoughts on the matter is that it shouldn’t be a bodybuilder but have certain aspects of the body that is comparable to a bodybuilder. Like the upper body i.e., the arms, shoulders, chest, and back. For the obvious reasons (heavy battle axes and broadswords). I don’t believe you need to look like a steroid using bodybuilder with every ab and serratas anterior showing, but if you can find a deep actor with those qualities; perhaps a natural athlete why not.

REH’s Conan is a big intimidating man and I’m sorry but Josh Holloway raises doubts for me. Daniel Craig has the perfect face, acting chops, potential body but he seems short to me. Another actor that has a suitable face is Sam Witwer AKA Doomsday from Smallville.

No matter how much people want to deny it part of Conan’s appeal is his physical prowess and your going to need a man with certain physical attributes to pull this off.

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

    @James
Yeah i totally agree and i chose Josh mostly because he already has the basis, is tall, has the face for it (Craig looks to eastern european for me, with his round – rudolf nose) and the acting talent and he is an unknown. The body is semi-important, because a male actor that has the tendency to build muscle can easily become Conan through a several month training.

Remember 300. Many of the actors in there were normal dudes, that had a body less than Josh has already and they trained for several months and looked kick ass, impressives fighters after it, so i’d rather look for charisma, acting talent, voice and leave the body aside, because in any discussion i’ve seen yet people always suggest actors JUST because of their body and a Conan movie with some random fitness dude will absolutely horrible.

  • TJ

Chirs Carmack. He has the build, not a wreslter, the face and look and is a good actor. I think he hits the mark.

  • TJ

    Ooops..typo..that should CHRIS Carmack.

  • James McKenzie

    @ Waldgeist
Well said, they should definitely never choose a bodybuilder or a wrestler based on those qualifications alone but what if one of these guys had some acting chops too. Whatever they do don’t choose Triple HHH I beg of them.
This guy should be between 6’2″ & 6’6″.
Should be able to play a Celt like the Black Irish.
Black Hair, and Blue Eyes.(dye & contact lens if need be)
He should be charismatic and have a soul when you look in the eyes.
He should look like he can go from 0 to 100 in 3 seconds.

  • Feef

I think Paul Telfer would be a good young Conan. Maybe he looks too young and “nice” but he is one I would say… okay, he would fit.

  • James McKenzie

I like Paul, and he is a true Celt, but you are right he does look too nice. Maybe with the right direction he can achieve the melancholy that is required. I was actually critiquing him in a Hercules movie because I felt he almost had the right look. His acting seemed sub-par but it just might have been the direction and the production of the made for TV movie.

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

Yeah i fear that Paul is just… well to pretty and not a good enough actor :( he is very much “in love” with his physical appearance and knows how good he looks. That can be something that hinders an actor and is the reason why so many “male models” never get the “acting” part of being an Actor (another famous example is Paul Walker).

  • James McKenzie

    @Waldgeist
Yeah your right too pretty. Maybe we can put him through the ringer. Train him for MMA by giving him Jack Daniels before each fight. That should add character to the face.:)
    I pity the casting director.

  • James McKenzie

So I’m looking at my Frazetta statue of Conan, and Sam Witwer has the same facial features. Go ahead and google the two and see for yourself and tell me what you think. There is a lot of talk that people want Conan to look like REH’s but when described they still gravitate towards Arnold’s’ look. Frazetta’s Conan is REH’s Conan.

  • http://www.ageofconan.com Waldgeist

Mh.. honestly he looks to boyish for a Conan. No one would take him seriously because hes so pretty. He has the same problem that Orlando Bloom has, Pitt had in his younger years… sure they maybe trained and tough guys and even (Pitt and Bloom) are excellent actors that could portrait a tough guy, but their face and charisma would not speak “tough”.

  • James McKenzie

    @ Waldegeist
I know what you mean he is rather boyish but they are looking for a young Conan, and forgive me for admiting this but my wife watches Smallville and being a Superman fan I tune in for shits and giggles myself. That being said he fits the above criteria and his character on the show can get pretty dark. I wonder if training and make up can take away some of the boyish attributes.

  • James McKenzie

You know I just put things in to perspective for myself by putting above actor up against Djimon Hounsou who is going to play in and produce the new Thulsa Doom movie. I recall my support for above actor based on the grounds that he is not ominous enough.

P.S. I don’t know Brad Pitt was pretty tough in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.

  • James McKenzie

    @ Waldegeist
Please humour me a moment while I play the devils advocate. What do you think of Roland Kickinger? He is not your a-typical bodybuilder and he is relatively unknown.

  • James McKenzie

I should do more research before I leave a comment. He is your typical bodybuilder. I guess what I meant is by looking at him now he is not you typical muscle bound bodybuilder.

  • http://yahoo.com Daniel

I will be very happy if they put this movie off well. But like always this kind of movies never end right, and the reason is the main character,in this case Conan. No matter who they cast is always the wrong one.I will say The Rock will make a fun Conan,is better than any of the other choices i read in this page, and why The Rock? you ask?Well nobody can’t play Conan as Arnold did.He was Conan. So no matter who plays it this new movie is not ganna replace the old Conan.

  • James McKenzie

Nobody wants to replace the Arnold Conan. What Conan fans want is someone who resembles Conan as REH described almost in detail in his stories.
Sure I like Arnold; particularly 2 movies,(Conan and Predator) but unless they do a King Conan with an older Arnold the best thing to do is go for the source material.

  • FRANK

I only have one name for you all ANDREW BRYNIARSKI! He played a football player in the movie “THE PROGRAM”. He also played LEATHERFACE in the last 2 TCM movie’s. Color his hair black give him some blue contacts and you got conan.Noy to mention he just has that born in the hill’s of wild cimmeria look.Look up his pic’s.

  • FRANK

    Noy is the new not!

  • Mats

Of all the names suggested (so far), about the only one I might see being reasonable is Bryniarski. At least that guy has some character in his appearance.

The rest… they’re all cookie-cutter. Kickinger? It’s all about the body. Telfer? I’m glad nobody was looking over my shoulder when I Googled his images.

Like has been expressed (by those who understand), whoever gets suggested, should impart some aspect of character.

This is a movie; you should want to see it for the story and the expressiveness of the actors, not how some dude’s arse looks on a 40-foot screen.

  • Mats

    Follow-up:

I tell you what; if they find a younger version of Vladimir Kulich, it’s in the bag.

  • James McKenzie

    @ Mats
I liked Vladimir Kulich in the 13th Warrior. In terms of Kickenger I was just playing the devils advocate; I don’t think he should be cast, and I really don’t think Telfer could pull it off. He is too much of a pretty boy. I`m not sure how much character Bryniarski brings; he looks a lot like Titan from American Gladiators and both would have the same character with a Leatherface mask. It`s easy to criticize other peoples suggestions when you don`t have one yourself.

  • FRANK

The reason I like Bryniarski is because he is a guy that has the conan body the conan look and can act.He has not had a lead part in a big movie, but could pull of conan. But i just thought of something. First of all i just would like to say that i would love to see a conan movie that is faithfull to REH’S book’s.But maybe it’s to soon. All the actors that have been suggested on this page are good or intresting guys. But we can find things that we do not like about them.Like their to pretty or to young or to old,i mean hell now that i think about it Bryniarski is or will be 40 year’s old this year. Not a good age for a young conan. So with that said do you guy’s think it might be better to have a conan movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger called “CONAN THE KING”.I mean could it be to soon to remake a conan movie when Schwarzenegger is still burned in to people’s mind’s as conan.Iam a REH conan fan like all of you,but i think we are outnumberd by Arnold Schwarzenegger conan fans. And maybe a conan movie staring a unknown is not going to do good.Thay could make a movie calld “CONAN THE KING HOUR OF THE DRAGON”.That way we get are movie that is faithfull to REH.And the movie will do good at the boxoffice because of the fact that Schwarzenegger’s name still sells ticket’s

  • James McKenzie

I believe they can do a Howardian Conan with Arnold. I think the first film captured the REH essence if nothing else. I can watch either interpretation. I think we all feel a little shafted by Conan the Destroyer, and would like some closure.

  • Mats

    @ James

You got me there. I don’t know who, specifically, I’d like to see portray the Cimmerian. Probably the same problem a lot of people are having. But you’re right; it is easy. I’ll have to bring one to the table.

  • ralf

Drasko Andjic is best choice for Conan

  • Rufus

Get Dominic Purcell on a course of Growth hormone (ala Sly Stallone) have him do heavy compound lifting for 6 months and feed him nnothing but meat and poultry and Bob’s (or Robert in this case) your uncle, there’s our favourite moody Cimmerian.
Regardless of eye colour, I think whoever gets the role should wear scary blue contacts because his eyes where such a focus in all REH’s stories. I love Arnold, have been a comepative bodybuilder myself and actaully met him in 91, but dont let him near this film REH/Frezetta’s Conan all the way.

  • cat

I like to add something as a woman – I think, the actor they choose should also have a certain amount of sex-appeal. Josh Holloway might be fine. Daniel Craig is smaler than me, and there are some why nots like Telfer. but I didn’t think of anyone so far he might fit perfect. Conan is someone the girls in the stories are eying with great interest, so he can not be as ugly as many diehard fans obviously wish him to be. I think, there’s a lot between to pretty and the look Frazetta gave him (I don’t like the Frazetta-Conan too much)
I don’t care so much for the director right now – I really want to see the guy they choose. Until the presentation of the main man this movie simply doesn’t exist.

  • Thomas

No matter who they choose the actor needs to have a powerful physique! Even the young Conan was renowned for his strength, so who ever it is better have a fairly heavy layer of muscle on. I would be more than disapointed if they find some scrawny limpet with long black hair.

  • Andre

I think Josh Holloway has the looks to do it. Perhaps even the acting ability. But there’s something missing that I can’t quite put my finger on.

What we need is someone with the presence and physique of William Smith in his early days. Someone with just that hint of menace.

  • http://www.lebombart.co.uk LeBomb

Coming from a british perspective…How about Tom Hardy who recently played Charles Bronson?

    http://reelguyz.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/11/tom_hardy-bronson.jpg
    and
    http://i.thisislondon.co.uk/i/pix/2006/11/tomhardy071106_243x359.jpg

he can get big and tough and is sensitive and deep..he can be arresting and intense…and yet is somewhere between being beautiful enough for the ladies and insane enough for the lads…without being too pretty and fay.

  • Carrieanne

Oh my NO 1 choice would be Dwayne “the Rock” Johnson. Though he does not meet the requirements i would still love to see it. I have been saying he should do it for years now.
